Chiming in as yet another American to say: nobody I know actually likes either of them. We're probably more incensed about this than you are, given how tied Pat Tillman is to the American identity (I don't even watch football and was a very small child when he died, but even I know him as something of a folk hero). The entertainment industry is a big tangle of disgusting people who give each other awards for anything and everything and that's all that's happening here.
Female American vet here, father was a WWII vet, husband is a vet. I hope the Tillman family have the ability to take charge of who receives this honor in the future. This is so unfair to the family. They had to fight so hard for the US military to acknowledge that Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire. This was an honorable man, from an honorable family. Saying he aimed a plane with armament at his father, but oh so graciously called it off. Listed his ‘kills’ (I would argue they were gaming kills on a gameboy he was playing on in a bunker), dishonored both his grandparents and their legacy. I’m just so saddened, and angry. He is not an American citizen. I saw one mother ask Harry to use the money he bought the award with to help her son-in-law who lost a leg and had 75 broken bones. Those are the veterans that are being disrespected by this award being given to a middle aged man who hasn’t had to actually work a day in his life. I’m so disgusted.
Hi Sharon, Thank you and your family so much for the service to our beautiful country. My husband was in the U.S. Army for 26 years. Seeing things like this happen is so unfair to Corporal Tillman’s wonderful memory and his legacy.
Not to mention the juvenile antics Harry wrote about dodging drug tests while in the military. How could he possibly support his fellow soldiers while in a drug haze?

My heart breaks for Mrs. Tillman who was not even consulted by the Espy's on their decision to award the Pat Tillman Award for Service to Harry. As an American, I'm not happy about Harry getting this award. I remember watching Pat play his final football game, walking off of the field, sacrificing a lucrative career, because his patriotism was so strongly embedded within him. 9-11 was such a horrible day and Pat wanted to do his part. My son-in-law has two Purple Heart medals from the war in Afghanistan. He doesn't complain like Prince Harry and he's in physical (and mental) pain EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! The Queen let him keep his involvement in Invictus when she took every single military title/patronage from him! Harry has no shame!! To accept this award which I would be willing to bet he didn't even know about before their agent went into damage control is sickening. I guess you can call me an angry American but maybe I have a right to be. I'm a retired 1st Responder who has loved a Firefighter/Paramedic for many years. We stood in front of our television on 9-11 and watched in horror as the towers fell. I knew what he was thinking, this would probably lead to war, and we were too old for the military. In the following days he continued to work his 24 hour shifts and I worried myself crazy every time he left. Pat Tilman joined up ! He became an instant hero in the eyes of a great many 1st Responders and his death hurt as if he had been one of us. Harry has been to war, yes. But his honor is gone. I would say he will stop accepting awards when he takes the big one he wants so badly-The BRITISH CROWN.

I am a retired nurse practitioner who used to work at a Veteran Affairs medical clinic. Many former co-workers are veterans themselves, and several of them deserve the award. They risked their lives to serve our country. After discharge and despite their injuries, physical and/or mental, they continue to serve their country by helping their fellow veterans by working or volunteering at the VA. Many of them form additional groups, including sporting ones to offer additional support. They're not getting paid one cent for the additional work. In fact, many would use their own money to finance their activities. So when you talk about hard work or mental health, you look and listen to these true heroes and not the Parking Lot Fraud and Prince Hazbeen. I am disgusted.

Apparently there was one other British who received the Tillman award in 2021, a well-known soccer player by the name of Marcus Rashford who helped raise millions to feed the children during Covid. I don't think he had any military connection. While Marcus Rashford received many awards in the UK, one wonders if the US is bereft of deserving recipients. Surely to goodness there are many unsung American heroes who are just as deserving.

But apart from playing weekend polo at a very average amateur level, H has no specific connections to any proper mainstream sports himself. His only sporting connection is through Invictus, and for the last 5 years he has used this as a personal PR platform and as a fashion merching opportunity for his wife to enhance her personal income, hardly in line with the Tillman philosophy of humility and self-sacrifice in the name of service to others.

I think there is an obscure driver for this: Serena is a member of The All England Tennis and Croquet Club on account of winning Wimbledon. It’s the only way you can become a member and it’s the most coveted prize in tennis besides the calendar year Grand Slam. Catherine, Princess of Wales is Patron of the All England Club. I would keep an eye on the Serena - Harry’s Wife association. It could get very interesting.
As a Brit, I hadn't heard of the Pat Tillman award, or Pat Tillman's amazing life of dedicated service. So if this controversy has made more people outside of US aware, then at least that is one good thing about it. And yes, it is an outrage that H should have the vanity to even consider accepting this award for himself, personally, in regard to his representation of Invictus. Harry didn't found the Invictus games. He took the idea from the Wounded Warriors games in the US. He took the blueprint to the Royal Foundation which included William and Catherine. They gave it to Harry because at that time he had just gotten out of the military and was doing a great job until he met MM. She has made the games all about her. The Invictus games are having severe financial problems and many of the veterans have voiced their opinions about how the games are no longer about them. They are very proud of their success as they should be however they are not given the honor of being able to celebrate and do interviews showing their excitement of their accomplishments unfortunately someone else is taking that away. Harry and MM'S last visit to Canada showed very little of the participants. Harry was interviewed for GMA but mostly the questions were about his new life after stepping down and any information he could provide about his father's cancer diagnosis. He had just returned from his 13 minute visit to see his father. Harry knew about the interview and that is why he made the spontaneous trip hoping he would get the information that ABC wanted to know. However it failed miserably. Harry does nothing without getting something out of it for himself. I'm an American and he is not a citizen of the US. He has never served in our military. As Mary Tillman said there are much more deserving people who don't come from a wealthy privileged background. She believes it would best be given to the unsung hero's who are not self promoting but are closer to the full embodiment of the award and who deserve to be honored.

We're probably more incensed about this than you are, given how tied Pat Tillman is to the American identity (I don't even watch football and was a very small child when he died, but even I know him as something of a folk hero). The entertainment industry is a big tangle of disgusting people who give each other awards for anything and everything and that's all that's happening here.
Female American vet here, father was a WWII vet, husband is a vet. I hope the Tillman family have the ability to take charge of who receives this honor in the future. This is so unfair to the family. They had to fight so hard for the US military to acknowledge that Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire. This was an honorable man, from an honorable family. I am waiting to hear if this award was purchased. Nothing confirmed yet. Thank you Shauna for bringing attention to the complete story. Bunker Harry has exhibited treacherous behavior so many times. Saying he aimed a plane with armament at his father, but oh so graciously called it off. Listed his ‘kills’ (I would argue they were gaming kills on a gameboy he was playing on in a bunker), dishonored both his grandparents and their legacy. I’m just so saddened, and angry. He is not an American citizen. I saw one mother ask Harry to use the money he bought the award with to help her son-in-law who lost a leg and had 75 broken bones. Those are the veterans that are being disrespected by this award being given to a middle aged man who hasn’t had to actually work a day in his life. I’m so disgusted.

Not to mention the juvenile antics Harry wrote about dodging drug tests while in the military. How could he possibly support his fellow soldiers while in a drug haze?

I remember watching Pat play his final football game, walking off of the field, sacrificing a lucrative career, because his patriotism was so strongly embedded within him. 9-11 was such a horrible day and Pat wanted to do his part. As an Australian, a Commonwealth country, this Award SHOULD be awarded to a USA vet nominated by the Tillman Foundation, posthumously if needs be, and presented by Mrs Tillman personally to the recipient. If she is unable then the Chair/CEO of the Foundation.

We stood in front of our television on 9-11 and watched in horror as the towers fell. I knew what he was thinking, this would probably lead to war, and we were too old for the military. In the following days he continued to work his 24 hour shifts and I worried myself crazy every time he left. Pat Tilman joined up ! He became an instant hero in the eyes of a great many 1st Responders and his death hurt as if he had been one of us. Harry has been to war, yes. But his honor is gone. I would say he will stop accepting awards when he takes the big one he wants so badly-The BRITISH CROWN.

I am a retired nurse practitioner who used to work at a Veteran Affairs medical clinic. Many former co-workers are veterans themselves, and several of them deserve the award. They risked their lives to serve our country. After discharge and despite their injuries, physical and/or mental, they continue to serve their country by helping their fellow veterans by working or volunteering at the VA. Many of them form additional groups, including sporting ones to offer additional support. They're not getting paid one cent for the additional work. In fact, many would use their own money to finance their activities. So when you talk about hard work or mental health, you look and listen to these true heroes and not the Parking Lot Fraud and Prince Hazbeen. I am disgusted.

Apparently there was one other British who received the Tillman award in 2021, a well-known soccer player by the name of Marcus Rashford who helped raise millions to feed the children during Covid. I don't think he had any military connection. While Marcus Rashford received many awards in the UK, one wonders if the US is bereft of deserving recipients. Surely to goodness there are many unsung American heroes who are just as deserving.

But apart from playing weekend polo at a very average amateur level, H has no specific connections to any proper mainstream sports himself. His only sporting connection is through Invictus, and for the last 5 years he has used this as a personal PR platform and as a fashion merching opportunity for his wife to enhance her personal income, hardly in line with the Tillman philosophy of humility and self-sacrifice in the name of service to others.

I think there is an obscure driver for this: Serena is a member of The All England Tennis and Croquet Club on account of winning Wimbledon. It’s the only way you can become a member and it’s the most coveted prize in tennis besides the calendar year Grand Slam. Catherine, Princess of Wales is Patron of the All England Club. I would keep an eye on the Serena - Harry’s Wife association. It could get very interesting.

This will be a stain on this award and will cheapen it! Why should the award given to the Invictus games? Why not an AMERICAN like Gary Sinise? Harry and his games are NOT American, and bunker Harry is NO hero nor should he receive any awards. IMO
Harry didn't found the Invictus games. He took the idea from the Wounded Warriors games in the US. He took the blueprint to the Royal Foundation which included William and Catherine. They gave it to Harry because at that time he had just gotten out of the military and was doing a great job until he met MM. She has made the games all about her. The Invictus games are having severe financial problems and many of the veterans have voiced their opinions about how the games are no longer about them. They are very proud of their success as they should be however they are not given the honor of being able to celebrate and do interviews showing their excitement of their accomplishments unfortunately someone else is taking that away. Harry and MM'S last visit to Canada showed very little of the participants. Harry was interviewed for GMA but mostly the questions were about his new life after stepping down and any information he could provide about his father's cancer diagnosis. He had just returned from his 13 minute visit to see his father. Harry knew about the interview and that is why he made the spontaneous trip hoping he would get the information that ABC wanted to know. However it failed miserably. Harry does nothing without getting something out of it for himself. I'm an American and he is not a citizen of the US. He has never served in our military. As Mary Tillman said there are much more deserving people who don't come from a wealthy privileged background. She believes it would best be given to the unsung hero's who are not self promoting but are closer to the full embodiment of the award and who deserve to be honored.
I’m an American and if the Pat Tillman should go to anyone it should be an American Veteran! And not awarded by some self proclaimed druggie princling cast off from the U.K

There is only one problem in giving the Invictus Games this award America has the Warrior Games who should deserve the award first.
If Harry accepts this award, he should be ashamed and embarrassed, I feel embarrassed for him. Pat Tillman, is an American hero in the eyes of the American people. I do not understand why Espy would give this award to a British Prince, who rejected our Sovereign and his country. I am sure the USA have many other more suitable people to give this award to, Harry does not deserve to be given this honour. To be honest I am lost for any further words I am so ashamed of Harry.

He has shamed the Invictus Games by taking money from it, letting his wife make a mockery of the soldiers and used it to do a fake Royal tour if Nigeria. What on earth do ESPN see in him that we can't?

I believe Harry should no longer be involved in the Invictus games, he does not bring anything to the Invictus games, there are many real British heroes who have served, been wounded in action and have gone onto live their life in service of others, Harry and his wife only serve themself.
Kate Jackson's description of the Tillman award also grates. It is NOT about "marginalized communities". It is for HEROISM. They're trying to turn it into a woke virtue signaling award and, that too, is an insult to Pat Tillman's memory.
Aren't wounded veterans often a marginalised community? Once their service is over they, as individuals, seem to be forgotten by the general public and the Government and not supported back in civilian life in the way they require.
