    Wow, I was going to build a trap from scratch, but you video made me realize I can use an older cage I already had on hand and just make the funnel. Plus I can make 2 sizes of funnels, one for house sparrow and one for starlings. Also, the funnel not being on the floor helps prevent escapes which is the problem with all the funnel trap plans I've seen. Kudos!

      @taranta  Рік тому +1

      Thank you friend and good luck to you in your new project. Remember that the starling is insectivorous, I think that with mealworms it would work as bait, but if not you can put it where they see it and they come to eat it until they take a liking to it and then they enter the trap more easily.

    The vertical structure nature of this design looks like this design is superior over the others that are horizontal, inducing the birds to feel more secure. This looks like the ticket. Well done.

    Thanks for this video. I am trying to prevent Engish Sparrows from harassing our native Chickadees and Nuthatches. The sparrows drive them out of their nesting boxes and destroy the eggs.
    I caught 7 English sparrows. This is enough to give the native birds an advantage . I also caught one native Chipping Sparrow but let it free unharmed.
    This helps to protect our natural environment so much appreciated!

    We did the same trap, it's very effective and doesn't hurt the birds. We need to trap some of them because they compete with the chickens for their feed. After it's trapped we release them some place else, far in the mountains.

    Taranta another thing is that these European House Sparrows kill some of the smaller native birds so that they can take their nest to breed. This is the real problem with these E-House Sparrows. Now, there is the European Tree Sparrow that looks like the E-House Sparrow however, they don't have grey on their heads, their hears are completely brown.
    Putting the perches above the entrance is the key as when ever they are disturbed, the first thing they do is fly-jump to the perches and bypass the entrance completely. Even though other E-House Sparrows continually enter, they don't see to recognize that, that's they way out.

      The trap is the tunnel, inside there are seeds that attracts entering to eat, on front it has a stick as a guide , once inside they get confused and do not know how to come out and start looking for the sides instead of the center which is the way out.

    • @taranta
      @taranta  6 років тому +1

      The stick, the tunnel and the food should be in a straight line, so the birds stand on the stick and see the food, another detail is under the stick you must put stones or other sticks to obstruct so they don't go under the stick and force them to jump the stick so they can see the food.
