    After seeing and learning how much damage introduced starlings do to our native woodpeckers, I decided to try my hand at trapping them. I made this trap using 1 inch square cage wire. The trap is baited with small pieces of home made suet and located beneath a suet feeder. I also put an entire suet block in the trap. The starlings enter through a funnel shaped opening but have trouble escaping.

    I read your website on testing traps. You have very impressive starling capture counts and the cavity nesters thank you! Bird Barrier and others sell a small funnel trap that has a second funnel compartment room. I find this room to be the 2nd level of defense to keeping birds in the trap. However, that is more sparrow sized. Also, trapping high numbers is almost always seasonally dependent. And high numbers usually mean - not too bright fledglings. The Sparrow Trap door (videos on youtube) is designed for catching a bird indoors or catching a decoy. After catching a decoy put it in a funnel trap and then the decoy brings in a baker's dozen. DECOY DECOY DECOY is the key to successful multi-bird trapping.

      The birds and other animals are created for one purpose I believe; some are for our enjoyment some other for our consumsion It depends on your concept of life. But to me to be able to invent the various parts and put them together for one purpose it is some kind of engineer. Keep up the good work. and have more traps shown 2/16/19

    Keep up the good work the more you get rid of the more woodpeckers will reproduce , along with nut hatches, and Great Crested Fly catchers...and Purple Martins if you have those.. and Bluebirds.... All the people who will give you grief,, they are completely clueless... I destroy 50- 100 starlings a year and about 500 house sparrows.

    Do squirrel and rat traps work, (or can they be adapted with a tunnel,) for starlings? The feathered beasts are bringing their fledglings to my suet feeder, so the time is ripe! I have the patience and the time to trap just one or two at a time. The Tomahawk trap plus shipping is super expensive on the sites I found it.

      You may be able to bait the animal trap to get them. Try it and report back. You may catch a native bird but you can release it.

    Thank you for taking the time to educate people on these destructive birds. I learned the hard way when male house sparrows killed whole families of bluebirds and swallows right in front of my nose. Once you experience that tragedy, you can easily destroy HOSP. How do you get the sparrows out of the trap and what do you use to clip their wings?

    Every bird has a right to live. Starlings are wonderful beautiful birds. They help reduce bugs. They mimic human voices and whistles. They also make great pets!
    They are here for a reason just like every other bird/mammal. You should not trap and kill them. If they happen to die it should be naturally as nature intended.

      Backyard Birds. Well, you can believe me. I am going to be a wildlife vet and I have worked with a wildlife rehab group for years. I got all the calls for a large city and have heard and just about everything that happens to wildlife. Starlings and sparrows can be bothersome for some native species, but nothing near the damage cats and humans cause. Every sparrow and starling taken out of the population by traps, means the chances the hawks and cats end up with a bluebird or purple martin is much higher.

    • @BackyardBirdsUS
      @BackyardBirdsUS  7 років тому +2

      Honestly Speaking, you need to start by changing your user name; it’s a farce. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Starlings are vicious invaders that devour most of the food we put out for native birds, and they attack and chase native birds from feeders and traditional nesting spots. Culling and eventual elimination is the only solution for this non-native bird.
