If you're listening to a pianist playing a Chopin etude and you hear a wrong note, the pianist has a problem. If you're listening to Monk and you hear a wrong note, you have a problem.
Monk once said of other Jazz pianists , I can play like THEM , but they can't play like ME. How true no other pianist puts so much into originality into a piece .
I just love the spradic references yo the original melody as if to say"just to remind you that i am aware of the tune here"!fantastic creative and fertile invention
The tune CARAVAN, was not written by Duke Ellington, it was written by Juan Tizol from Puerto Rico, who was a member of the Ellington band and played the valve trombone for many years. While the attribution to Ellington appears in many places it was not written by him. There is plenty of proof that Tizol was the composer of this tune.
10 Most Influential Jazz Pianists You Should Listen to 1. Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) 'American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk’s unmistakable flat-fingered playing has been heavily influential to many generations of pianists. His eccentric playing style is defined by unusual pauses and messy, angular melodies. He was known for suddenly standing up and walking around to watch the rest of the band play, as if he was in a trance. Monk stabbed at the piano with such a ferocity that he would sometimes hit notes adjacent to those he was aiming for.' www.libertyparkmusic.com/best-jazz-pianists/
What you say is correct. The composer of the piece is Juan Tizol and him alone. Ellington is often also credited (mistakenly so) as a writer on tunes like "Take the A Train", "Satin Doll", and "Chelsea Bridge"...all three of those pieces Billy Strayhorn compositions. But it's not uncommon for composers in the music business - especially back in the day - to share credit for their compositions, for various reasons, with someone not at all involved in actually writing the music...a common reason being for extra money or some kind of other deal. Some music industry hustler hears a great original composition, offers the composer - who may be down on his luck and in need of money - a modest sum to be credited as one of the writers, and then sits back and shares in the royalties from the tune. Thelonious Monk's classic composition "Round About Midnight" is a magnificent example of this. That piece has at least 3 other names listed as composers of the tune, when in fact the tune was composed by Monk and him alone. Always in desperate need of money, Monk would sell writer royalty rights to his compositions to whoever would give him the money he needed. Now, I'm not saying that's how Ellington's name got attached to Tizol's composition (or to any of Billy Strayhorn's great material). Perhaps it was because musicians like Tizol and Strayhorn owed their career's to Ellington that he also gets credit for their compositions. But I'm with you on setting the record straight about "Caravan" being solely a Juan Tizol composition.
Some people may say that Monk is the worst pianist ever. So what ? He IS the best pianist in the universe, the biggest musician ever ever ever! Lots of love...
Monk at his best, as late as 1969. His signature harmony gets a lot of attention, but man he could swing hard too, and he doesn't use whole tone runs here that he was famous for.
I was in this concert i think.... I was 17, and i`m searchin all the time for the "original" caravan-theme (like Ellington, i think). Today i can hear, what i´m in 1969 could´nt hear. I´m sad, my mind wasn´t big enough, to hear, what a genius i saw....
@@The64200 Caravan was first recorded in 1936 by a small ensamble of Ellington musicians under the direction of Barney Bigard- clarinet, Tizol, composer, - trombone, Cootie Williams- trumpet, Ellington- piano and others… UA-cam has it, my favorite!
This is an impossibly great performance, full of poignant sadness but joyfully triumphant at the same time. I have to agree with Roswell Rudd and Steve Lacy-Monk was our greatest jazz artist, period!
Unknown by most of the public, Caravan was composed by Puerto Rican musician Juan Tizol, whose credit has been completely denied for decades. He also composed "Perdido" and many others. I think it's time he's granted the honor. Duke Ellington, his personal friend, maybe thought that if people knew that a Hispanic composed the music, it would hamper its success.
Juan Tizol's name has appeared on sheet music. Keep in mind that it's not unusual for the public to give more credit to the leader of the orchestra. I feel very confident that it had little to do with him being Hispanic. By the way, in most circles Marvin Gaye continues to get sole credit for writing 'What's going on" while Renaldo Benson of the Four Tops, along with Al Cleveland are virtually ignored as writers of that iconic song.. although their names appear on the records and the sheet music 🎵
@@PapaEli-pz8ff Ellington would have never been able to write that tune with a “Latin” tinge which in fact was an African tinge inherited by Tizol from Spain, African Moors which colonized Spain for 800 years until the 15th. Century.
jus when you think MONK has lost his mind he makes it all fit perfect and beautiful and you know it just you can't hear how great it REALLY IS cause you ain't MONK. YOU DIG....?
I respect tf out of him and his rhythm is amazing but I still think this all sounded bad, I think I’m more into melodic jazz improv like Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans
This is SUBLIME. I've been a follower of Monk's music and performances for some time, but never before i was so hooked from the first listen (maybe with the exeption hearing Epistrophy for the first time). This is great music.
If you listen to Him He's playing Funk. Black music always fits in with each other. Berny Worrell is the evolution of Monk. This sounds like Parliament Funkedelic.

Loveeeee it😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.....perfect
Monk is sovereign and no one should argue about possible wrong notes, so everything is fine. 1:06
Well said, all😊
Unless they're playing op 25 no 5.
One of the most original improvisations I ever heard.
There's no replacement for this version. This have to be preserved throughout the ages forever and ever.
Monk once said of other Jazz pianists , I can play like THEM , but they can't play like ME. How true no other pianist puts so much into originality into a piece .
what a true and poingnant comment !!
Kenny Drew Jr. captured the essence of Monk, if not the actual wrong note, technical klutziness (why I like about Monk, not criticizing him for it).
Monk is from another Planet
Are they accepting migrants?
This has everything I love about Monk's style. Playful yet haunting. Sitting smack bang on the line between genius and insanity
I just love the spradic references yo the original melody as if to say"just to remind you that i am aware of the tune here"!fantastic creative and fertile invention
Without a shred of a doubt this must be the wickedest rendition of Caravan that's ever been played!
He is absolutely chilling in this rendition of Caravan. What genius!
..and I'm chilling with 😎🤯
best version I always see/hear/dream
We are truly lucky and blessed to be seeing this so many years after it’s original recording. TM will live forever. Bravo 🙌🏾
He's sweatin' like mad, puts his whole self into his playing. A musical monster..a genius. Perfect.

Mamma mia !
Only Amazing !!!!
How kind of merveleus concentration and intensity. Thelonious Sphere Monk. Forever !!! ❤
I'll save this genius version. For future! FANTASTIC!
The art of Jazz, making a standard your own, Monk owns it.
Today is October 10, 2020. Thelonious Monk's 103th birthday.
103rd, not 103th.
Maybe you did 103th on accident.

Gosh that swing!!! ^^ Love it...
Doesn't bring me to tears "sometimes", no: not "sometimes" but ALWAYS!!!
Yes! Yes, tears comes always with me! And, i was there!
L'adorabile e meraviglioso pianismo solista del genio Monk.
he was so unique . true art !
That's quite a deconstruction and the integrity of the melody is perfectly intact. It takes a genius.
A stride the Caravan, fabulous, great thematic variations!
On a whole different level! Very hard to play!
Stride-bop, maravilloso y sorprendente.
I love the phrase stride bop.
Just incredible, I am sure Duke would have loved it.
Piano solo.
Man was LOCKED in
Wow… its so crazy good!
truly brilliant; love the Harlem stride in the left hand
superbe interprétation , quel pianiste ce Monk
OMFG!! The quality of this vid and it's Monk live in the flesh!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Truly masterful and beautiful. ❤️

This is the clearest I've ever seen Monk. The man was sweating like a racehorse! I guess that's what playing Ellington does to you.

I've also been a HUGE Monk fan! Thank so much for posting this.

I like Monk and Bill Evans among pianists, but why put one over the other? They were very different and both great.

One hell of a stride pianist.
This is surprisingly danceable;)
Beautiful version are Duke Kellington song thank ❤❤❤
Monk shows the stride on this great version. Nice
Such wonder as my ears perceive lyrical discordance dancing through my dreams..
No "discordance" to me. Monk had the deep and true talent to play the "wrong" notes with such genius that these notes became the good ones... ^^
Michel Petrucciani has a ver good version also.
In addition to the Petrucciani version, there are 312 other very good versions of the Caravan! 5:35
Monk's version, however, has an idiosyncratic character. Unbelievable! 3:53
It may seem like a paradox, but it is sophisticatedly elegant! 2:13
This guy is on another level altogether.
Thanks for posting such a great piece of solo piano in the inimitable Monk style. He was truly one of the greatest jazz pianists ever.
Monk'struosity!
It's beyond opinion that this is one of the greatest performances of all time.
Fact
it's good but chill

How is this possible !?

Monk: "100%"
