    Cobb's OTS tune is the safest thing next to the stock map. I know people hate the stock map but there is a reason why the FA20 pulls timing with a slight heat soak. Cobb's tune mimics the safety net of the oe tune as per Cobb's engineer, find the video on UA-cam.
    Once you drop the knock sensitivity parameters, that's what your Protuner will do, you are pushing the limits of what the engine was designed to do. But that's is not to say that you can't run a protune for tens of thousands of miles, it's just that shit will go really wrong when parts start going wrong.

    I mean I’ve been running stage 1+ for 100,000km with 0 issues and I’m sitting at 200,000 right now on a 2016 wrx so I’d say it’s a safe tune...as long as you stick with what’s prescribed by the tune as far as only using Cobb parts etc...

      That's what everyone doesn't understand... Run the Cobb parts specified under the map notes and you should be fine. However all cars are different and some might not run any better on the Cobb ots tune than they would on the stock Subaru tune.

      Exactly - if you dont do bolt-ons, but just a CAI or similar, or just want better drive ability - OTS is fine. It’s when you go to downpipes, etc., then it might matter. They critics of OTS say that all cars are different, etc….true, but the factory has one factory tune - so…………endless debate ….. i have a MAP stage one, and it’;s fine. No other major mods. It is a lot better than the OEM tune and i like the car the way it is.

    I appreciate the WRX content. But do you think Subaru does a separate tune for each WRX, to adjust for all the tiny differences these things have from the factory? OTS tunes have their place, and unless you are fine tuning for the exact kind of performance you want and/or trying to get every little bit of performance from your mods, I do not think a protune is worth it

      OEM tune is safe AF made for noobs that heatsoak and gun it from a light it starts at .675 dam EVERY time, unless it reaches 1. and if it does it will probably go down. OTS tunes are always at 1 so you will get more power but I guess it's less idiot proof

    I'm a long time VW driver, and have used "OTS" tunes for years. I've never had a problem caused by an ECU flash from a reputable company. I don't know why it would be any different for Subarus.
    Your comments about all the variables in an engine are as true for VW as it is for Subaru, and the OEMs are not tuning their cars to factor in the thousandths difference in a clearance or milling. Their tunes include safety margins to account for that. I think that an OTS tune does reduce some of those margins, but it isn't like your engine is going to grenade.
    I'd like to see your data to support your opinion that an OTS tune is going to cause failures. Without that information, this is an opinion piece, not a factual discussion of failures.
    All that said, I did watch all the way through, and appreciate your time and effort to put this out. Cheers

    Getting insight from the tuner to explain why e-Tunes or Pro-Tunes is better than OTS tunes. It would help people understand why it's safer for the car. Many car reviewers even say the factory tune from Subaru is conservative and when doing pulls the car dials back timing or boost. I assume it's to be safe and reliable as possible and to meet EPA standards. I haven't heard anyone personally ending up having engine damage or failure to their motor from an OTS tune, unless there are some that have??? Maybe the tuner could elaborate on long term effects with OTS tune? Elevation and mechanical engine clearances do play a big part in how the car runs totally agree with you there. I assume the factory tune is universal to meet vehicles in all ranges of elevation and motors produced. And OTS tunes are like a step up from the factory tune but somewhat cutting it close to the safety limits to push out more power.

    • @AutoEnthusiast
      @AutoEnthusiast  4 роки тому

      Yeah the factory just has more safety and room in it. It also learns, versus a static tune. But yeah if you look at knock values, afr, and DAM, Cobb OTS flag warning signs all the time

    Depending on what dealer tells you you can keep warranty even with stage 2 as long as you use all Cobb products and have only the OTS map uploaded. People often forget or don’t believe aftermarket manufacturers talk to factory’s to get unlock codes for head units and a number of things…what makes you think Cobb doesn’t have a reputation with Subaru and Ford and VW??? Ask a dealership when you purchase f you can modify the vehicle and how far you can go before voiding warranty. My dealer is willing to letting me go stage 2+ with intercooler all Cobb name brand and Cobb tune dealer agrees in writing that Cobb makes safe stock tunes.
    I have been told if I go flex fuel or change the high pressure pump in the engine itself that my warranty would be void so I will stay on 93

  • @bayareanational
    @bayareanational Рік тому

    I kinda get the argument.
    The cars all come with the same tune from the factory, but Subaru has safety built in I’m sure.
    So what he’s saying is if you start turning up the performance the window of safety is smaller hence needs to be tuned per the car.
    I have Cobb OTS right now, otherwise stock engine. In CA we can’t really change intakes and J pipes so I may get it tuned eventually, but if I’m keeping it stock to stay CA compliant then it’s probably not as critical.

    Click baity, but, with that said I still watched and believe there is some good info here.
    In my opinion, an OTS map that has been made with a map guide and specific parts in mind is perfectly fine for Subarus. The reason I say this though is dependant on the owner actually following the map notes and having the parts that the tune was made for. It also helps if the OTS tune is coming from a reputable company that does revisions.
    Specifically with Subaru the tunes are setup for maximum safety. The timing map where you will find most of your damage maker can be setup conservatively with the DAM adding or subtracting timing based on your specific conditions. The oem map is designed this way as well since we don't all live under the same atmospheric conditions.
    But, it is extremely important to follow the specific build path on Subarus. When you change the intake you are changing the flow of air into the engine. The Maf sensor is measuring this air and commanding the fuel to mix to achieve the desired afr. If you change that airflow the maf scale will be wrong and you will get the wrong afr. Adding anything to the exhaust system that allows for a free flowing exhaust stream will generate faster responses from the turbo which will pull more air in sooner than the tune was designed to handle. For example at 3k rpm you previously made 2 pounds of boost under full load and now you are making 5 pounds, that full load area of the map will be leaner as it was tuned for 2 pounds.
    Getting protuned is going to be the best option for longevity and getting exactly the type of performance you want with your cars setup. Every tuner does it differently and some know how to achieve safer results. Think of it like buying a suit from Marshalls, sure it'll fit and look okay. Might even get you laid once the drinks hit her. But having that same suit tailor fitted to show off that buldge in your pants will get you laid before you drop 20 bucks on a sex on the beach.
    It's up to you and most of the time that OTS map will be perfectly fine. (as long as you follow the build path the map was made for).
    Thanks for the content 👍.

    Factory tunes are OTS, they are not specific to your individual car or the environment you are driving in. OTS tunes from a good company are safe to use and usually are better than the stock tune. On my 21 wrx I'm running a Cobb 93 stage 1 tune (totally stock car) and it is better than the stock tune. Drivability improved, the 4k and up rpm power is a lot better, power all around is better, by a small amount. Don't expect a massive amount of power from OTS tunes. I would rather have a custom tune and if you are changing engine related parts a custom tune is the better choice. Custom or "Protune" will get the most out of your car. I have some parts to install so I'll be using a custom tune from Dmann.

Part of me wants to sit in the position of my "point of view" is coming from the hard data/reality of what an OTS tune is, I am not sure where disagreement can come from. Your ride should be running fine, but the times where you get to the outer bounds of 2 or 3 sigma's from the curve, your factor of safety and learning will not be in-sync with ambient/localized conditions.
