Roland Jupiter-4 Analog Synthesizer from the year 1978
    some self-programmed sounds by RetroSound
I prefer the Jupiter -4 over the big synth brothers Jupiter-6 and Jupiter-8.
The sound is stunnig, powerful and unique. Never perfect in tune, very good analog sound. Really a beast. :)

The Roland Jupiter-4 Synthesizer from the year 1978 is one of my favorite synths. Here can you find the full Jupiter-4 playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

The best sounding synth of all time, in my view. Each voice sounds better than any SH-series mono, even though there's less flexibility.

I bought one of these new in 1980. Had a lot of fun with it, made some incredible sounds along with more regular poly synth type stuff, although the presets were crap and you had to tune the four voices every gig. Joined Nik Kershaw in 83 and took it on tour in 84 along with a Yamaha DX7 and a MiniKorg 700S. Later tours with Nik featured a Jupiter 6, OBXa and an Emulator. Got into midi sequencing and the digital synths in the mid to late 80s - JX10, D50, M1, TX802, - and SOLD the JP4 in 89! 😱

Wonderful synth. Yes the presets were crap but the JP4 sound character is really unique. So different. Saw your video with Nik. Great.

What did you use for sequencing with Nik? Live sequenced synths, or backing tapes? I loved all his stuff back then and your synth work...

    • @1958TimMoore

@@johnsayer116 Hi John, Nik did a lot of the sequencing on the records himself using a Yamaha QX1. We didn’t trust it for live, however, so used 2 Tascam 8 track recorders running in sync with a click track for Mark on the kit!

This thing has some serious character, caught myself switching back to the video tab just to make sure it was the same machine. I don't often get the 'wow' feeling when listening to a synth but this thing has got 'it'

Thanks for that. The Great Old Four had always been my fav jupiter, and I enjoy the way you handled it for that few moments you shared with us. I started to explore the synth-landscape with a semimodular 100, so I´m somewhat `fixed´ to Roland osc/filter-area. JP4 sounds like synths `have to´ ... There may be companions of all kinds, usefull in arrangement , but THIS is, where my heart is.

In 1997 we bought one of these for £80 for our PXP music project. I loved it though in the end we never recorded with it. We sold it around 1998/9 for not much more than we paid for it. Now they are really hard to get hold of and very expensive. If only we'd known back then. All the analog synths that passed through our hands for next to no money. The shame of it, I still miss the ole JP4.

Nice demo. I have owned a J4 for years, and this demo very much demonstrates what it can do. I wouldn´t say it´s better than the J8. True, it can do stuff the J8 can only dream off, but the same can be said the other way around.

Another excellent demonstration. What a great way to start the day.
I have a question for you... As you are playing and adjusting, do you prefer rotary pots or linear slide pots? I'm currently building a synth (in design stage) which is like a pair of Minimoogs getting into a fender bender with a System 35 and then crashing full speed into an ARP 2600, but I'm a guitar player who loves analog synth noise and can't really play keys. Thank you! :-)

    • @retrosound72
