This was originally an RKO picture, but MGM purchased the rights at some point intending to remake it, as they renewed the copyright in 1961, but never remade the film themselves. Turner Entertainment is the current copyright holder as the owner of the pre-1986 MGM library. Distribution rights to the RKO library were also among the assets Turner acquired from MGM in 1986, with RKO continuing to hold the copyrights.
Dunne. Commands every second of screen time. She is a fascinating actress, so luminous beside the rather wooden John Boles.
Loved this movie, anything with John Boles and Irene Dunn.. They were magic in Back Street..

I love Irene Dunne, but I’d never imagined her as Ellen Olenska.
Agreed
I share the birthday with Irene Dunne (December 20th). Sadly she died 3 months before I was born.
Irene is so incredibly beautiful ❤❤
The 1993 version is on now but I would much rather see this one! Dislike remakes intensely! Irene Dunn is Amazing!!!
This is actually the 2nd version of the film. The original is from 1924.
The Scorsese film wasn’t really done as any sort of remake. He started fresh.
It is not really a remake since both Films are based on a literature classic
