If anyone was wondering about the Japanese text on the left, it roughly translates to "As refreshing as the morning sun, Dorothy Ashby - Queen of Jazz Harp"
Edit: The first part should actually be the title of the song "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise"

    • @danielevendrame9350

Thank you. Then it might refer to the song "Softly, as in a morning sunrise" :)

I was not surprised to read about Dorothy Ashby's interest in koto music and instrument. I see the interest is mutual and I would'nt be surprised her albums are uber-cool in Japan. And personally, I hope Takemitsu knew of her music, because I'm certain her would have loved it.

Hot stressful day, with loud neighbors doing loud auto engine stuff, stressful family arguing at each other & stomping on the floor right above me, but I knew just what to do; draw the drapes, turn on the fan, stretch out on my bed with my wonderful fur baby bulldog, sip on a glass of champagne (hey, it is a Friday late afternoon, after all), & tune into some Dorothy Ashby, ahhh~ Thank you so much, Marcel the Drunkard, for being part of this prescription!

One of my favourite albums of all time. There is also a companion album called "Aranjuez" that contain more tracks from the same sessions as "Django/Misty". As far as I know, these were the only recordings she made that featured her playing solo harp. They were recorded shortly before she passed away from cancer and were only released in Japan, which is why not a lot of people know about them. Some critics dismissed these late recordings as lackluster compared to her peak period "Hip Harp" "Afro Harpin" "Rubaiyat", but I think they form a magnificent coda to an illustrious career, and prove that she had lost none of her skill even at the end. It's just a shame that it's taken so long for people to finally acknowledge her talent.

Just per chance, happened to bump on to her name on UTube...what a find. She had it going on in a big way...can't wait to hear more of her, & I will!

So many great musicians out there, now and in the past. This one, Dorothy Ashby, did not achieve fame, yet I bet she knew she "had it". Her recordings reveal a great talent to those of us who never knew her or saw her play. This solo album is outstanding.

hank You so much for Dorothys celestial Jazz! - I am 70ty now and had 1 LPRecord, >Jazz on Harp< by D.A. in the very late 60ties! Unfortunately circumstances seperated me of it and it seems >I had "forgotten" that swing for decades! Don't know why! BUT: - A few years ago I only found little of her on youtube, but now ....! Wow! What an earfeast!

No matter what you listen to. Every era has so many unqiue different artists to emerge from. Some are on the radio for the mainstream, and some are hidden somewhere in the depths of the vast infinite expanse called records shops and well, the internet is a good one too. Giving credit where credit is due, Dorothy Ashby is as wonderful as she is underrepresented. Hard to think that this choice of harp is partially due to male musicians putting pressure on women not to play the same instruments as men. Imagine someone telling you which instruments you can or cannot play. Great job in spite of that oppressive trend.

Amor en paz is also(Astrud Gilberto/A.C. Jobim)-Once I loved. And I gave so much love to this love, It was the world to me. Once I cried At the thought I was foolish and proud And let you say goodbye. Then one day, From my infinite sadness, you came And brought me love again. Now I know That no matter whatever befalls, I'll never let you go. I will hold you close... Night and day... Because love Is the saddest thing When it goes away. I will hold you close... Make you stay... Because love Is the saddest thing When it goes away. Because love Is the saddest thing When it goes away. Goes away...
