- For years, many assumed Skull and Bones was a ghost ship; the Ubisoft pirate game that would never make it to harbour. Having suffered six public delays, it is one of the most frequently postponed games of all time.
Now, almost seven years since it was first revealed, Skull and Bones is ready to set sail. But this final version is very different to the game we first saw in 2017. The naval battler has changed forms multiple times, with its final design emerging from a major reboot that prolonged development and left several prototypes shipwrecked. This is the inside story of Skull and Bones’ many delays, and the challenges that caused them.

All they had to do was make Assassin’s Creed Black Flag without all the Assassin’s Creed story stuff. None of this makes sense. They’ve spent 11 years trying to figure out a game that was already made and somehow lost elements like boarding ships, raiding, running trade routes, and building a town along the way.
The story of Skull and Bones development has to be the strangest story of a game’s development every. They had a templet with Black Flag. Sid Meier's Pirates! is even a thing if they’re trying to figure out how to make the Blag Flag stuff work as a single player game...which it also sounds like they were trying to do.
For real, none of this makes sense when they already had a fully functioning open world pirate game in Black Flag

Its because they wanted to cancel the game but the government of Singapore wouldnt let them due to some kind of deal.
None of that works in multiplayer
This was actually a great documentary cover by IGN! An honest and non-embelished one at that. I’m sure the developers on the SG team will appreciate this deeply as they had been under wraps for so long.

A lot of people will be pleasantly surprised by this game. Experiencing the multitude of changes first hand over the last few years has been one of the best testing experiences of my gaming life. It's not Black Flag or SoT. It's a new world and new game. It has been a lot of fun and finally, we will be able to share our experiences outside of the NDA.

Basically Ubisoft was just being lazy with their deal with the Singaporean government and just threw people at Skull and Bones without direction to fulfill the bare minimum of the deal. That's why it was kept alive for so long. They didn't want it finished, they just wanted somewhere to put the Singapore employees and still keep the government funding. Only reason it came out is because the Singaporean government told them to.

First Skull and Bones was some epic Pirate game but everything gets scraped. Now under the new Creative Director Elisabeth Pellen, she's randomly changed it to some game where you aspire to be a Parrot. No wonder it's taken so long.

It isn't any one thing. It's a few pieces of audio layered together to make something original for this documentary.
I've played this game a few times and every time it's drastically different, but so much better. I'm excited to see the final product

Calling this game open world is silly. This is the equivalent of going to disney world, but you can only walk through the park, not actually get on any attractions. No boarding, island exploration, or combat outside of naval combat is a downgrade from a game made a decade ago.

What do you to expect? Hard Truth? They are allowed to say what Ubisoft and marketing team wants them to say. Otherwise they would all be fired. Its literally nothing new with any big company talking about their product.

idk, seems like its not open world, only ships and exploring few markets, what we want is AC black flag on steroids, even bigger map with all map explorable and missions, ship battle is nice bonus but cmon this dont even have inside sword ship battles...

The fact that the final product feels highly compromised by business interests and expedience makes me feel like makes me feel like a lot of the reason for delay had to do with business interests and expedience compromising it.
The narrative that Ubisoft allows to be told is inevitably the narrative Ubisoft would like to be told.
It's kinda wild that the story of Skull and Bones is as much the story of Ubisoft Singapore as it is the game, and yet Ubisoft didn't make a single Singaporean person available for interviews. Presumbly this is because all the senior staff are people brough over from France or Canada.

The gameplay overview sold me on this game. It looks fun despite all the changes.
it feels like early access than a AAA game, no boarding minigame or anything just an execute, no friendly fire now swords and pistols 11 years of development but feels very last minute

This is literally a boat game, how tf you gonna have a pirate game with no hand to hand combat, how are you not able to board the enemy ship and fight them with swords

The problem with the game is that it's a farming simulator. Farm minerals and wood. Refine minerals and wood... Hardly a pirate game at all. You can't even board ships and fight like in Black Flag. As someone who's played the Alpha and Beta versions, it left a LOT to be desired
This game literally revolves around naval/ship combat just like black flag did as a main feature.
@@iraford5788Black Flag wasn’t mainly around the naval combat though, it had multiple story lines taking place on Islands that you can freely visit, as well as the foot combat that can be implemented during boarding actions.

Ubisoft with the recycling of game mechanics, like butter on toast for them. This game might be the reason why ubi singapore either get shuttered or placed back into a support studio. I’m glad they were transparent enough with the development of the game but all it shows is that this game is at the least gonna have a rough launch.
