Excellent reminder Dan. Also, whenever I set up camp, I am always looking to make sure there are no widowmakers, large dead branches, that can kill me or damage my solar panels on my van. Twice where I am camped now we have had wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. I take my time to find a safe camp in case of storms with high winds.
I do enjoy the videos, most are short sweet and to the point without a bunch of fluff and filler
Good advice and wind is often overlooked. As a field archery coach and course layer I'm very aware of the hazards wind can cause not just in arrow flight but trees or branch falls. A few years ago I was working on a field archery course when the wind picked up. Within minutes branches were falling all round us, sometimes within a couple of feet.

To follow up you might want to make a video showing how to set up a shelter in high wind. It's an art that not very many people have ever studied.I have had to double up in my shelter because others have watched their shelter blow away.

Use of a wind barrier: old rule of thumb is that (1) a wind barrier affects wind more when it is nearby than if further out. (2) Effect of the barrier can extend to six times its height.

First thing I do before I set up shelter is assess the wind direction so smoke from the fire isn’t blowing in my face. I learned that years ago the hard way😜
Great video. Another thing to add is when the wind is unstable where it’s coming from one direction or the other at different times. If it’s also warm and then cool in the summer months, you have a potential for tornado type weather. Therefore you probably won’t want to be around a lot of dead trees and be around more mature trees. Maybe also be in a lower line area because most tornadoes that I’ve seen haven’t reached deep into draws.
Wind driven cold rain is the most brutal of conditions
Ohhh yeah, I remember the time I had to walk a few miles home in a freezing cold, hurricane wind and driving rain wearing just a hoodie.
I had to take breaks by hiding behind anything I could just for a moment of relief.

Dan, 2 things. 1- Wouldn't be a good idea to put 2 plow frame facing each other with the campfire in the middle. It would be like the pioneers wagons encircling the campfire for the night like the old John Wayne movies. 2- Isn't that the reason why that we tie a plow frame facing a tree. Having the tree blocking the wind and the blowing rain. Just a thought. Thanks

Very good advice.
As an aside .. Wind and specifically 'Wind Chill' in general. Before going out .. Nordic Walk, Forest Ramble (I have one almost on my doorstep), Walking the Pooch, going to the Supermarket / into the City, whatever, I ask my Google, "Hey Google, what is the wind chill temperature right now", and dress accordingly. Rain Forecast .. the Weather Bureau is not infallible. A hand and nose stuck out from the balcony and the planned activity confirms what level rain gear goes with.
Wind. My forest has trees and branches that wait for an excuse to fall over or down. I stick to open areas in wind.

Thank you for addressing the subject of wind consideration. You’re right, it’s not often talked about as compared to the other elements. And when it is the emphasis tends to be on widow makers. But you’ve shown that there is more to consider when dealing with wind. And I like your advice to just slow down and really assess your camp site prior to setting up fully. That’s “better than from a book” advice. So thank you for sharing it.
Wind is a killer! I am okay wearing shorts in low 30s F without wind. Add wind to the mix and the skinny jeans are back on. (When I know I wont need anything more, and am near the house or vehicle.) Even then it is risky when alone!

@@mrmicro22 I Nordic Walk and at starting temperatures above 10°C .. and especially with a possibility pf rain ( no wind), I wear shorts. Wet floppy trouser legs below the knees are for me, a no-no. It's a joke amongst my Swiss Walking Colleagues .. "Ho, ho, it must be above 10°, Tommy is wearing short pants" 😁.
That said, my lightweight pack carries backup rain, head, neck and torso insulating gear.
People will not be complaining when there is a tree on their tent.. great information as usual
A few years back a tree blew down in a provincial park, on one of the gulf islands...unfortunately into tent ⛺️ where 2 women were sleeping, there on the gravel pad.

the only time I prioritize shelter over fire is when it is raining - and even then (my camps are in a heavy woodland area a friend owns) I start with my 10 X 13 tarp and place it almost flat about 6' above ground first, then I work under it... I start with fire because if I get cold building my shelter (I live in Canada) then I can warm up and make a hot drink, AND, as you mentioned, if the wind is prevailing and weird to assess then the smoke from greens will point it out and I set up my bed appropriately.
In the Western US Ponderosa Pine stands are often dangerous to camp in if there is a significant wind. Ponderosa shed large branches in windy conditions. I have measured branches 6 to 8 inches diameter and over 6 feet long that came down in a nighttime moderate wind storm in a mature stand of Ponderosa Pine. There are recorded cases of hikers being killed by the big branches. I don't think it's a common occurrence but I don't want to push my luck. However Ponderosa are easy to get a large amount of firewood if you're well away from established main trails.

So many comments... windscreens... another topic.. not talking necessarily about for fires.. of course use wind screens, rocks, walls, dirt, etc... and smoke in the shelter, windscreen needs to be as tall or taller than shelter.. so much to say in a short video! Indians (Native Americans) always set up the entrance to their tipi to face the eastern morning sun. This was to greet the day and give thanks to God. Most wind blows from west to east.
We have a saying here in the top half of Illinois. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the wind. Mostly said in the winter.😂😂

I would think wind is the deadliest condition in the forest for campers and woodsmen
I just place my tarp in the direction my home is so when the heavy winds kick in i use my tarp as a paraglider to fly back home

It should also be noted that if you have a fire going and your shelter is directly between the wind and your fire the smoke will often curl back into your shelter. Best to have the wind behind but at an oblique angle to minimize the issue.
It is said that once upon a time a wise wanderer - a hobo - met the Sun, the Frost and the Wind on the road as they walked opposite him. The wanderer lifted his hat, bowed his head, and said:

However, the faces of the other two darkened because the wanderer did not greet them.
"Beware, wanderer, if it's summer, I'll make it so hot that the skin will burn off your cheeks!" - threatened the Sun.
"It's okay, just let the wind blow!" - waved the wanderer.
"In winter, I'll make such crisping, bitterly frost that you won't be able to move not only your toes, but even your thighs!" Uncle Frost was angry.
"No problem, just don't let the wind blow!" - shrugged the wanderer.
Don't forget dead trees and branches during windy conditions. Warm and dry is where it's at, in the woods and at home.

Wet+wind =killer. No matter the temperature.
Watch for trees that are susceptible to breakage or blow-over.
Stay off the top of the mountain or hills will help a lot.

That's two (similar) methods. The others are filtering & boiling.
Do you know the rules or laws on Bush crafting per state by state? need to buy anything before bush crafting, I am needing information on BLM, Forest Service Land and National Parks.
I wouldn't rely on UA-cam for legal advice. Each state should have up to date information available online.

your body will tell you what to do. if you're wet, and it's cold and windy, you've GOT to get out of the wet clothing, out of the wind and either in dry clothing or with fires on both sides of you. I wear net longjohns (wiggy's) all of the time when it's cold and I carry a set of milsurp polypro long johns and a 2GoSystems XL size reflective tyvek bivy. I envelope the bivy in a couple of taped-together heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners and the long johns are in a 3rd drum liner, along with my spare socks, boxer shorts and T shirt. If I get wet, I get out of the wet clothing, dry off with my shemagh, get into the dry underwear and long johns and wearn the bivy and envelope as a poncho. Then I can wring out the wet clothing and move to where I can have a fire. and use it and hot rocks to dry out the clothes. Doing anything else is VERY 'iffy".
