- This video is our first comparison between ORWO NC500 and Kodak 7219.
We received the film and made this video in 48hrs. So it's rushed, it's not perfect in any way, but it gives a good comparison between the two stocks. We have to do a lot more exploring with the NC500, including perhaps tuning our scanner and post workflow more. Until then however, this is a good look at some of the good things and bad things about the new stock. We're very excited to provide more tests in the near future. - Фільми й анімація
Thank you for this thorough review! Yes, the ORWO stock has issues. Upon a quick web search, I was unable to find out if there are slower (and thus finer grain) stocks available. There is no doubt that the Kodak 500T is much better looking, but I hoped that the ORWO might be nice for a certain, washed out, dreamy look. It is a very harsh looking stock as far as I can tell. Great idea trying to process it as reversal.
Thanks for posting those test results so fast! Fingers crossed they're able to improve the quality and maybe even come out with another, lower speed-lower grain color stock. Interested to see how this would look as reversal since the overall look of it reminded me of really expired Ektachrome.
Yep me too! I think exposing at 100 iso and E6 processing is what we will do next.

Orwo gets their color film coated by Inoviscoat which are known for providing materials for Polaroid and Lomography. I honestly don't think NC500 is a unique emulsion because of how similar it looks to an existing stock known as LomoChrome Metropolis. Both are 400asa and "desaturated" films with noticeable grain. NC500 is not a cinema grade film by any means so it makes me wonder how much of their marketing is true.
Exactly, it's not a "new" stock at all. The NC400 is supposedly a better emulsion, but we haven't been able to test it and with the sizing and perf issues, I don't know if it's even worth testing at this point.
I developed NC500 and 2019 version Metropolis in the same tank, and they are not the same film. Metropolis came out with green base, NC-with yellow with light greenish tint. They are from the same family, but they aren't the same film

Intresting tests. I would want the new orwo stock to be more unifomed, but i can see this stock being used to make some really interesting footage if tree he goal is to make a movie thats supposed to feel like its made in the 70s
Yea it's kind of a joke. I hope we can test the NC400 soon, it's a lower contrast stock which was not available to the US market for some reason,.

great video - I cam across this after I made my own and had similar experiences with it in still form. I was looking at the curves they provided and it's got a REALLY flat curve so handles overexposure pretty poorly which was what my first results were. Exposed properly at 400 I really liked my results. Did also notice that on the 35mm still too there were occasional inconsistencies and unevenness of the emulsion.. I think/ hope they are still dialing this one in.
Yea the NC400 seems to be better and more consistent. Our friends have been testing it recently. However, I don’t hold out any hope of them releasing anything again. It seems like it was a one off situation. Kinda sad if that was the case.

As a still photographer, I have noticed that NC500, deals very well with mixed lightning. Could be due to the colder nature of this film?
Yea we kinda found the NC500 to be pretty poor with tungsten lighting. It doesn’t have the same color balance as kodak that’s for sure.
@@CinemaRepository , I have never used it for tungsten. But I for in rooms with both daylight and tungsten. I use scanned raw files to create my output as well, so I have more control over the colors. But NC500 is not easy to work with
You were trying out the 85 filter in daylight (late in the day) -- but isn't NC500 a daylight-balanced emulsion?
Yea, the spec sheet never told us that so we shot both 85 and without 85.
@@CinemaRepository -- Well, it's not a great picture -- certainly compared to the 7219. Has a bit more "Super8" look to it with the grain and registration/"wobble" issues!
@@aengusmacnaughton1375 Yea it’s for sure not great. NC400 looks a lot better but not available yet. We also did an E6 test that we haven’t published yet that was grainier as well, but for sure interesting. I do believe this stock is agfachrome with a orange coating to get the stock to work as a negative.
What’s the price of each can of stock? If it’s substantially cheaper that might be a key point in this.
It's a bit cheaper, but honestly nog worth it.
I believe 48 for 100ft and 190 for 400ft. If it was 15-20 dollars cheaper maybe you could consider buying it. But for the price they're asking you might as well pay the extra money to just go with vision3.
I definitely look better on Kodak. It sucks the orwo didn’t come out as expected. It was fun to be a part of this project

NC500 is actually a daylight stock. Tungsten stock is supposed to come later.
Correct, the website did not offer any color balance information and we shot both with and without filtration just incase.
I’m coming from Germany but I did not know that ORWO is still producing film stock. The company was founded in the eastern part of Germany in the former “German Democratic Republic” as an successor company of then West German AGFA (inventor of color film). I expected that they were pushed out of business like most East German companies after reunification.
Yea it's just a "brand" name right now. I don't think it has anything to do with the original ORWO brand.
@@CinemaRepository Filmotec GmBH/Orwo producing b/w lab & camera films since 1998.New owners are Jake & Micheal Seal who want to push colour.Current colour stock has some similarities to Orwo std 8 film I bought in the 1990s from Kahl film.-I bought large quantities of Orwo b/w film stock from Tom Samuels International [UK's Orwo sales rep until he died recently-since then not so much]
@@edwardnowill4408 The new stock behaves similarly to the older ORWO color negative which was an AGFA stock. I believe it’s agfachrome that’s been tweaked for ecn2/c41 processing. I’ll know a lot more when we do our E6 test.

You know, clearly its not as good as the kodak stuf and its very grainy and i dont love the colors. Thats basically what I got shooting stills with it. But I gotta say, for a first go its really very good! I mean making color film is incredibly difficukt and its great to see how close they are here to a really usable stock.
The NC400 looks a lot better but currently not available.

It can be, but currently it’s only a small percentage cheaper than kodak.
Suprised how the registration goes to hell with the ORWO. Not liking the grain nor the color. There is a lot to appreciate in that Kodak is still making great film stock.

FYI Orwo film is made in Shanghai China, not in germany.
Eh? Can you send info about that? I know the guys who make it and have confirmed it’s made in europe by them. Invisacoat does most of the work and they perf it themselves.
