  • I always carry the ten essentials when on multi day hikes but even on short day hikes I always have these three bare minimum items and you should to.
#1. An offline Map downloaded to your phone paired with a paper map and compass. You never know if you will have cell service when hiking so downloading the offline map of the trail allows you to navigate even when you can’t connect to service. I usually use but also sometimes use or
#2. An extra battery for your phone or GPS device. This can be your best life line in an emergency and could just save your life.
#3. A water filter or a for filtering water. I have run out of water on plenty of hikes and this has quite literally saved me from dehydration.
Share one of the trails on your summer hiking list.

All great tips!! Offline map for sure! AllTrails pro is worth it just for that! I also bring water purifying tablets with the filter…and definitely a power bank! All great tips.

When you said the bare minimum I thought BEAR minimum. Like what would be the minimum that you would take hiking to keep bears away 😂

A whistle, bear spray, bear bangers. Bear canister or Ursack for food storage, don't cook where u sleep or store food & smelly items.

If not a water filter, bring purification tabs to make water safe to drink. I bring both, a water filter and tabs as backup, as ur filter can clog or freeze and become useless. Dehydration can kill. My mother-in-law died from dehydration & kidney failure, at end stage Alzheimer's. Beaver fever, giardia is no joke. First backpacking trip, we didn't bring enough water, and were saved by a trail angel who gave us a 2 litre pop bottle full as he was almost back to the trailhead, and we were just starting. Now, I have 6 litre capacity, and better planning, always fill-up & camel up, when u can. Check trip reports, streams dry up in the summer, fall season.
And save cellphone battery by putting ur phone in airplane mode, AFTER downloading ur offline map, at home. Constantly searching for cellphone signal drains it's battery really fast, backup? Paper map & compass, and know how to use it.
