Uric Acid is the End Product of Purine Degradation Pathway
Persistently high level of uric acid leads to a metabolic disorder known as gout due to deposition of URATE CRYSTALS in synovial fluid of joints known as TOPHI.
High Uric acid may also cause RENAL STONES due to Uric Acid.
Monitoring UA levels in cancer patients helps in preventing renal stones.
Elevated uric acid levels are also associated with Ischemic Heart Disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, stroke and kidney disease.
Hyperuricemia is when Uric Acid in Serum more than or equal to 8 mg/dL
Hypouricemia is when Serum Uric Acid is less than or equal to 2 mg/dL
