Your videos are wonderful. Would you consider adding closed captioning? I love sharing these resources with my students, and some need that support. Thank you for taking the time to do these.
I'm so glad this video is helpful for your students! Thank you for bringing this to my attention - I will try to add captions as soon as possible. They're usually auto-generated for my videos, but this one in particular doesn't have any.
Hi! First off, this video is INSANELY helpful, so thank you for making this. Second of all, I tried to write my own introduction to the "unknown" prompt, but I spent FOREVER writing the intro. Any tips on coming up with a quick intro to ensure more time for writing the rest of the essay>
That's great to hear, thank you for your feedback! For the intro, try to think about the emotions, limitations, benefits, causes, effects, or other characteristics associated with the abstract concept that is presented in the prompt. For example, in the sample intro I described in this video, I talked about the effect of exploring the unknown: making new discoveries and innovating. Don't sweat the introductory paragraph too much; it's just meant to prepare the reader for the thesis and the rest of the essay.
@@MsPeerEditor hey thanks so much for your help, it didn't go as terribly as I thought I would. I have another problem that I'd really appreciate your input with. I have a hard time using the warrant to circle my evidence back to my claim. Any strategies for that?
@@Beepboopboopbopboopboop I would try to use the phrases "in order to," "because," and "as a result" to create your warrant. For example, with the penicillin example at 5:56, your warrant could state that the discovery of penicillin was important [because] it dispelled the myth that some diseases were untreatable and provided the foundational research for scientists to produce other antibiotics. This statement proves the original claim, which is that scientists' accidental discoveries often lead to new inventions. The warrant basically echoes the claim using specific details.
How many pieces of evidence would you recommend having per paragraph? Also, do you recommend centering each paragraph around a central theme (like scientific explorations) or a central claim? Thank you so much for this vid!
My teacher suggests that we don’t need that much evidence but that our evidence is well developed.and specific. So have like 2 pieces of rlly strong evidence and explain them a paragraph each and you’ll be fine.
Is an argumentative essay the only one out of the three AP lang essays where we are allowed to use personal pronouns and I guess diction that isn't as formal as the other two?
Thank you for the video! It’s really helpful, but I have a question. So after you write the counterargument do we need to counter back? Because I didn’t see it after you write the counterargument of innovations might harm animals
You should definitely check out my latest video on what topics to include in your info bank of general knowledge: ua-cam.com/video/umHVHUw0ZT8/v-deo.htmlsi=EHo8UaHi2dOiHQmw. For me what was really useful was to think about my history class. I’m also taking APUSH, so on a practice prompt about the clash between nature and machines, I talked about the Industrial Revolution and the creation of national parks. Thinking of historical examples helps a lot for me at least.
would it work to have 2 body paragraphs that include information from different domains to support our thesis, then to use a counterargument paragraph as the 3rd body paragraph?
In my opinion, I would focus on developing one strong counterargument or explaining the limitations of your argument in depth rather than trying to including multiple counterarguments. So 1 is fine!
Could the body paragraphs be broader than the specific examples you gave? For instance, could the body paragraphs be the unknown can have good outcomes, if it has a bad outcome then we can learn from it, and unknown is what keeps us exploring? Or something along those lines?
In my opinion, you could definitely make the body paragraphs broader as long as you include specific examples in each paragraph! My only suggestion is to be a little more specific when discussing "good" or "bad" outcomes, since it could be difficult to classify an outcome as one or the other.
I'm so screwed...I'm taking the test tomorrow and I'm very behind on current events and pop culture. I don't know what I'm going write about for evidence.
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I did a little digging and looked at the sample student response for this 2018 Q3 prompt on the College Board's website. This was the thesis for an essay that scored a 9: "The exploration of the unknown has led to unprecedented scientific development, cultural development, and personal development alike." I didn't look at this example when making this video, but my thesis and this one are actually quite similar! However, you don't have to fit one template when writing your thesis; just write a clear sentence that encapsulates the claims that you will discuss in your body paragraphs. You can find past student responses here: apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-english-language-and-composition/exam/past-exam-questions.
