  • Europe have begun the world’s first thorium molten salt reactor experiment in over 45 years. With this, Europe has entered the Thorium Energy race!
    Who will be next?

    Thorium is a natural element that can power the world for thousands of years with clean energy! You can hold your entire life’s energy supply in the palm of your hand with thorium.
    It has been estimated that 30 times more thorium than what is required to power the entire world’s energy demand is mined as a by-product and thrown away every year.
    The race to commercialise thorium is on with China in the lead followed by India, Indonesia and now Europe.
    At ThoriumEnergyWorld.com we strive to power the world with Thorium Energy!

    Great to finally see. After all these years since oak ridge and we are finally getting into a position where we may see something implemented. It's timing really. Like so many things in our lives. Take coffee pods for example. Not a new product. First time they were launched they flopped. And now? They are a hit. Everyone has a coffee pod machine. It was timing. The timing was right. Let's hope timing is finally right for thorium. With coal being phased out due to pollution energy affordability is such a hot topic.

      India is already doing this. Also US, China, Japan etc.
      India's program:
      1) AHWR (Advanced Heavy Water Reactor) with solid fuel
      2) IMSBR (Indian Molten Salt Breeder Reactor) with liquid fuel
      3) Accelerator driven system
      AHWR design is ready for deployment and construction may start anytime soon. It will be a 300 MWe reactor.
      IMSBR development has been initiated.
      Accelerator driven reactor is a joint project of India (BARC) and USA (Fermilab).
      There is already a running experimental U-233/Th reactor called 'KAMINI' (30 KW). There is also a Plutonium-239 burning FBR (Fast Breeder Reactor) that can generate U-233 from Thorium blanket to be used in Th-based reactor as the next stage.

    Why Thorium ?
    We got a HUGE stockpile of nuclear waste that could be transformed to Plutonium and burned after.
    That way we could clean up the mess we made earlier.

    • @EgadsNo
      @EgadsNo 6 років тому +2

      Thorium requires a neutron source like high level waste to produce energy- it is a catalyst for breaking down "nuclear waste" and recovering the energy.

    • @Haegar1968
      @Haegar1968 6 років тому +1

      Nay, that is not the plan. They want to start the reaction sure, and this will need tiny amounts of "old" fuel. But after that they intend on keeping it up with Thorium, leaving all the Uranium and Plutnium as waste forever.

    • @AndreasNorlin
      @AndreasNorlin 6 років тому +2

      It is two different problems. One, globally scalable CO2 and pollution free energy and two, solving the old nuclear waste. The by far biggest problem the world is facing of the two is energy (not nuclear waste). That is what we are focused on. There are many reasons for thorium to become the next energy standard, globally!

    • @AtlasReburdened
      @AtlasReburdened 6 років тому

      Im fairly certain that an array of well designed fusors could suffice as the neutron source, and we can completely divorce the future of energy from the problem of the waste of the past. I say we just bury ot all in California, there haven't been any signs of intelligent life there in decades so it's not like we're hurting anything.

    • @Clean97gti
      @Clean97gti 5 років тому

      The solution to the waste is to use Fast Reactors alongside MSRs. The Fast Reactors can break down all that nasty leftover waste while providing the enriched startup fuel the MSRs need.
      Also, MSRs will run quite happily on waste Uranium. There is no reason they have to use Thorium. There are real benefits to using Throium, but it's not a requirement.

      Conventional fast breeder reactors are able to tap into about 3% of the energy in the fuel. Thorium can tap in 99% of that 97% left.

      It is also extremely safe as it can easily be made to operate under passive safety systems- and because it cleans up "nuclear waste".

      @japrogramer 6 років тому

      basically, its dirtier .. in terms of the type of radionuclides produced. and because thorium is so abundant it means we can produce so much more waist. And we still don't know what to do with any of the persistent waist of this magnitude .. that's smart

    The video does little to address the real issues with molten salt Thorium reactor. The experimental reactor is presumably Halden (that has been closed down after a recent accident) or Kjeller reactor in Oslo that is a standard solid fuel rod fission reactor of low power for research purposes. Seems like it is a small scale experiment here. A full scale 200 MW molten salt Thorium reactor would require a huge investment to development, and many believe, because the military establish is not interested because such a Thorium reactor is not a good source of Plutonium 239 for nuclear bombs, that the will to develop such reactors and address the very real issues of concurrent reprocessing needed alongside such a reactor (note: glossed over in the video completely), that the molten salt Thorium reactor will never become a commercial reality. The fact is kWh for kWh, renewables are lower risk and lower cost than a nuclear reactor. Even molten salt Thorium reactors can be highly hazardous with 700 oC molten salt emitting hard Gamma radiation in operation. Heaven help maintenance people is a high-power 200 MW Thorium reactor were to experience a serious leak when in operation (for example due to component failure caused by molten salt Thorium being highly corrosive). Dr Sorensen asserts that molten salt Thorium is not reactive because of tight ionic bonding, then why are materials like Hastelloy-N required for the reactor vessel. Someone is not telling the truth.

    WHY ~ are all the photographs of PWR's ? Why are you showing an Containment Dome ? (Molten Salt reactors don't need them as they work at atmospheric pressures !?) Why are you showing a water pool ? WHY is this called the 'World's first Thorium Molten Salt Experiment in years' when the Chinese, Japanese and Indians have recent programs that are well under way ? This presentation is just wishful thinking. One might conclude that this video is nothing more than an 'intention' by the EU to steal more money for research.

    • @jackvac1918

      Thorium molten salt reactors will still require containment vessels as additional precaution. Nothing in the nuclear industry can be presumes 100% safe. If there is a breach in the vessel, even if it isn't under pressure, it will still leak radiation that needs to be contained.
