Okay she had her moments... But what an incredible save she made when that other pony stopped, and well done you for sitting it so well! You had so much more control than the first time!!!

Loved and was scared silly watching this! I was mostly a classical dressage rider but did hunt on borrowed horses that I had never ridden before. That was an exciting adventure. I have some suggestions for you to keep you and your horse safer. I used to retrain off the track Thoroughbreds. The first thing you need to do is learn how to keep the horse in the “corridor of aids.” Your horse is always crooked which means it is in control, not you. The reins are there to shift the forehand or the haunches, not control the forward motion. When the horse is straight, your seat can be used to control the forward motion by using a “rising canter.” (That means that you sit on alternate strides in a regular rhythm that YOU choose. Believe me this works wonders. I have used it to regulate some very fit strong Thoroughbreds. Now, the reins: From watching you ride, I saw you use only direct rein so the horse ducked out the left shoulder and took off. You need to learn how to use the indirect reins preferably in a dressage ring where you can practice at slow speed starting with walk, then trot, then canter. School your horse well on this and it will be much easier. In an open field I would have turned your horse hard left AT THE BEGINNING WHEN FIRST ENTERING THE FIELD BEFORE THE FIELD TOOK OFF. That would have gotten her left shoulder back in the corridor of aids. She is predictable so get ahead of her tricks. If you have never heard of indirect rein in front of the withers and indirect rein behind the withers, find yourself an instructor who does know how to use them. Your legs support the reins by helping to maintain control of the hind quarters, keeping the corridor strong. I got my first horse in 1962, my Horsemaster certification in 1975, and 2 weeks ago I rode 2 horses. I’d like to see you achieve that kind of longevity. Wishing you many more SAFER hunts. ❤️☮️🖖

i wish my hunt was as calm as this, when i was younger and i would hunt with the childrens meet when it was on i would love it but the hunt i go on they are all snooty and the hunt is known for killing foxes. it was a great save when that pony refused. mine would have been like 'wtf are you asking of me mum'

Hunts are extremely exciting for horses. Unless the horse is used to it, they can get very excited!

They want to go and can’t so they act this way.
Letting them just go could be dangerous for you and the horse.

The head diving, is she trying to buck, or grab the bit?
Maybe a stronger bit would help? You could also look at a calming additive to her feed before setting off - that helps mine stay focused, less stress, and 'white noise' brain 😊

No she roots the reins out of my hands she always has done. Hahah I have a Cheltenham gag in 🫣!! You can’t get much stronger. She’s genuinely just a buzzy pony it’s her nature bless her baba xx
