What a great video. Very helpful indeed with filter change. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I managed to find a 9 o'clock position working from above to undo filter housing and even to torque!
My only disappointment was to see that you didn't make lots of videos as I found them very clear and thoughtfully done.
    Thanks again.

If your Freelander has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted you will need to use a low saps oil, 5.9 litres of 5W/30 oil to specification WSS-M2C934-B.

I strongly suggest to use a Flexible Head Ratchet Spanner 27mm to remove the oil-filter.

Wish I had one, what a mess on! Had to remove a boost pipe to get more than one click at a time on ratchet. Good job I did as the last person didn’t so the best job of putting it back!

Perfect, thanks very much. Although, I'll be warming up the engine to make the oil drain more easily.

I'm doing the oil change but can't get the 27mm (6sided) socket onto the head of the oil filter housing. There is not enough space between it and the fan/ component? in front, with hinged breaker bar on the socket and secondly, the plastic head is rounded off, so that the socket on its own won't even fit! By the way, why are there 'flexible clips' moulded into each side of the hexagon anyway? I think the hexagon got rounded off because someone has used a ring spanner on it,-so a ring will not grip anymore. Any ideas, please? Can the plastic domed cap be gripped by a normal roll-up webbing type filter remover, without crushing? Thanks

@@johnsomerset1510 I’d try that, or even a chain wrench. It has to come off one way or another, and really the housing should be replaced anyway as the hex is rounded off. You might be able to pick up a replacement on eBay.

I noticed a crack on your chassis member at the beginning of the vid where you are showing the bolts on the undertray.

Nice vid. Would have been god with the sice of the engine and that more cars than landrover got the same engine like ford and peugeot in the deskription.

I much prefer changing the filter on my Mk4 Golf GTTdi. It’s as easy as it gets, lift the bonnet, there it is in front of the engine. I can think of a worse placement of a serviceable component - the coolant thermostat on the Freelander 1 TD4! Unfortunately the BMW engine’s thermostat location means a four hour workshop job and a quote of 700 quid to replace it! I did the sensible thing and put an inline thermostat in the radiator hose. About a tenner and some of my time. It’s been working perfectly for two years now.

Can you access underneath the car without a jack? I know it has about a 22cm clearance but is it enough to just slide under?

I've changed oil on a couple of these and our workshop now refuses to do them, the juice just ain't worth the squeeze. I genuinely feel the easiest way to do these is to remove the front end including the radiator. Absolute pieces of shit to work on.

Agreed - an arse to work on, at least it is on an 07 model. The only way I could do mine was to remove the cooling fan assembly behind the radiator which is easier than it sounds. Remove a couple of wiring connections and the unit unclips. It's fiddley getting it out and back in, but ensures much better access to the filter.
