  • A couple of weeks ago I had the honour of taking part in a shoot at Bisley to commemorate the disbandment of the British Army’s Machine Gun Corps. For the first time in 20 years a company's worth of Vickers Guns (16 in total) were fired demonstrating their capabilities.
    Not only did the day illustrate the impressive volume of fire that the guns were capable of but it also put their lethality into perspective. The shoot illustrated the devastation the weapons could bring and the important legacy of the men who manned them.

    Interesting. Nice to see the old guns in action. I thought that the UK would have banned this type of weapon. Who owns the guns?

      Thank you! They're all privately owned by Section 5 authorities (kind of like an RFD in the US).

    My great grandfather and his brother (if I'm remembering correctly) invented this particular machine gun. I'm half Vickers thanks to my mom...

    It was quite an impressive sight to see in person and a little scary too. Can certainly see why a condenser hose and can is necessary for concealment.
    I think I talked to Darren whilst at the spotlight event, everyone was incredibly knowable.

    Lovely! Two questions:
    Does SASC still teach indirect MG?
    How do you get one of them bad boys on your FAC? 😁

    • @tomsoki5738
      @tomsoki5738 2 роки тому +1

      You can get one with a section 5 license, but those are tough to get. And indirect MG fire is still a very relevant tactic for long range support, machine gunners on GPMG’s still train to do it and use it in combat

    The tripods on these are soooo tall and heavy looking. Great if you've plenty of time to choose a position and set up behind sandbags or something but otherwise they are so exposed? Be nice if they'd made a lighter tripod that allowed a much lower position I think that could OPTIONALLY be weighed down with something for stability as needed? Either height adjustable or allowed quick insertion of say a foot long vertical section again if needed.
    Just a thought!

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  Рік тому

      They are very heavy. Heavier than the gun. But you can set them up quite low.

    Not alot beats a Good Gun-Line!!
    Did a shoot, PDT, 12 GPMG's on the Line; End of shoot, ammo had to be expended, enough for 50-round belts per Gun, Sustained Fire permitted!! Nice and Loud!! With the wonderful aroma of spent cordite lingering in the air 😊

      Some of the guns were actually running a little faster than the 500 rpm average haha. Mine was running a little slower I think.

      Quite deceptive really, considering there's 8000rpm (133 per second!) going downrange.

      We could have had more, we had 2 spares which were both used I believe. But historically 16 represents a company of the Machine Gun Corps during WW1 so I believe that's why it was chosen.
