Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey UA-cam channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my UA-cam channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

Well, this is where Christianity and Aikido intersect. Although personally I think that metaphysical pacifism is a mistake.

Despite everything you went through, you still seem to really love aikido. That's remarkable. 👍🏻
What Rokas went through was not the fault of Aikido, it is rather some hindrances in his personality he needs to overcome. A lot of asian principles are hard to utilize in asian martial arts if brought up in a different environment where you never heard of a lot of core principles and even the local people are often times struggling especially with internal arts, there is a reason it is a DO a way, because it needs to be lived and breathed and not taken as a hobby.

@@Dave-lx3vt So you were basically saying he could have blamed aikido and hated it for the happenings, but you praise him for still staying with some things he is still emotionally invested in? Actually it is hard to get a picture for me regarding rokas. Actually i liked him more for character in his aikido period, but he missed to balance hard and soft back then. Now in his mma period he seems to lose path, which i view as dangerous. I stated in some of his videos, that a lot of strong fighters were built but i do not know of a fighter except musashi who became strong of himself. Most people just got themselves killed. Take for example wong fei hung, he was built by monks yet he failed to built his sons, instead just equipped them with a fighting methods and had to see how they eradicated themselves in fighting with opponents they had not the level to overcome.
You seem intent on pointing fingers and spreading ill will. I will not be able to change your mind in UA-cam comments, but I do wish you well. in order to explain some of the stuff they use you'd have to go into the "weird" aikido direction. Where you direct energy flow through the nervous system and shit. That stuff becomes crazy, ive devoted so much time trying to figure out if its real and my answer is that its convoluted. Its both true and false, both have mental and physical aspects to it. Its definitely true to the people that experience it. And there is elements of truth to it, but the belief is what causes the elements of the opponents body to be in place. If they truly struggle against you when trying to use Ki techniques its possible to force a weird type of tension where you open up for the other techniques. All of this is so hard to grasp unless someone knows what im talking about. So body control is everything, smaller parts have more force than people realize, the smaller I can manipulate my body the more control it allows over my opponent, when this practice and training goes deep enough it will feel and seem like magic as I can not physically see or translate all the movement my body is feeling. But with a resisting opponent this matters little. Just because I have 1000 muscles I use, if someone has just one huge muscle that they use correctly, it will still knock me out cold. but basically the realism is GREATLY exaggerated in Baki, its very unreal.
I'd love to see you break down more representations of aikido in video games, movies, tv shows etc.

I kinda want to add (as a big fan of Vinland Saga), that Thorfinn also listened a lot to people reciting the Bible. It was never mentionned if Thorfinn became Christian or not (yet, i wait for the Book release of the last part). It wouldnt matter, but it certainly fed his newfound principles as he threw away his old faith (the good old "War is great, dying in battle is the best"). Kinda like when Morihei Ueshiba transitioned to creating aikido, if you know what i mean ? I am sure the author, Yukimura Makoto, must have heard about the origin of Aikido
I noticed that as well. Maybe what he heard from the Bible helped formulate his thought process regarding non violence. Even if he didn't quite understand what he was hearing. That's the great thing regarding the Bible, or any literary text for that matter. People can generate different interpretations from the same text.
Hey, Rokas, love the content.Can you make a video on Hapkido. It shares similar concepts to Aikido but has strikes and is more aggressive.
I think it's because martial arts weren't banned in Korea in the 1950s like in Japan.
I noticed the similarities too, while watching Vinland Saga. Also, don't give up on Aikido, Rokas.
Love seeing you cover Vinland! The "I have no enemies" line speaks to me quite personally. I wonder if you'll cover other anime/manga martial arts content? There's an amazing manga called Kengan Ashura which features an Aikido master who's a lot different than the humble, frail Aikido practioner archetype, you should check it out!

I was hooked by season 1, episode 1 of Vinland Saga. That opening battle scene alone, convinced me that this was a show worth watching.
This was unexpected). Love this anime! Also very interesting parallel between Thorfinn and Morihei Ueshiba!
An interesting take. To me, the philosophy of Thorfinn and Thors was resemblant of late Leo Tolstoy's teaching on pacifism (a complete refusal to respond to violence to anything "evil" (a literal interpretation of Crist's "turning the other cheek") and criticism of the State which was using violent methods to achieve its goals). I don't know the Aikido philosophy in details to compare them, unfortunately.
What fighting style or mix of fighting styles does thorfinn use?

Painfully slow is a massive exaggeration.
Life is pain, no? Not just the daily struggle of running to keep up, but even a lot of processes like seeing for example is pure pain.
I think it's noble of you not to give up on your old art. I'm somewhat going down a similar path actually. A good friend of mine had too many disagreements with the instructor of a gym we started going to. It got bad, he was told to stop using stuff he he'd engraved muscles memory for, so we split. It's been tough, so my buddy who has more experience than all of us and is an encyclopedia of the art, much like you probably are for aikido, might start up his own gym if he can. For now we're training in private like many clubs seem to do in this city. I now see why possibly. Both instructors and students need to leave their egos as the door. Also, when did mma become about limiting outside experience, and telling a person what's going to work better for them when clearly it doesn't. Sorry, I'm going off a bit. Regarding aikido, when I bounced, I never met anyone that knew aikido, but I would talk to bouncers that came from other cities that had known a bouncer or two that knew aikido. We would often talk about styles, and wrestle a bit before our shifts would start, trying out different techniques to get warmed up a bit, a few silly ones to for a laugh. On the topic of aikido though, as mentioned, I know someone talked about a bouncer using it very effectively while working. I definatly believe it can find its place in an mma mix of sorts. Reason I also believe it to work is because a buddy if mine has been doing a ton of work on the counter momentum aspect of his wrestling, and I must say that if you slip up, he will get you, regardless of size. It's really impressive. He had a cousin that won a few mma fights than quit, so now he's training up to do the same, but with our grappling style, with heavy emphasis on wrestling as mentioned. I'm close to 100 pounds heavier than him, and a foot taller and he's got me twice fair and square in a good rnc. After the first time, I obviously changed my tactic, and kept my weight really centered, and planned on obviously off balancing him by just using my strength, weight and leverage, a dirty tactic I know, and I got him most of the time with this, yet one of the most impressive counters he did, which was a bit of hybrid judo counter was when I went to pull him in, and I was very low being taller than him, and foolish me was going for an O garuma, with wrist and an underhook on him. There's many counters to this, but if someone could bait there opponent into trying this in mma, his counter was priceless. I throw pretty fast keep in mind, so he must of drilled this with someone and had good timing. so as I started to turn and pull, he jumped, and planted his foot into the back of my knee perfectly on. I buckled hard, lost all synergetic strength, and since he was already at my back, quickly invited me in for a rnc again. I couldn't help but laugh after. There's power and worth in controlling your opponents momentum, and seeing openings when to do so. Judo counters are a wise thing to know also against anyone that's trained a bit, which seems to be a few these days.

It's a random thought, but the Witcher 3 killing monsters trailer always reminded me of aikido. Well - fantasy aikido obviously, with a notable deadly twist...
Rurouni Kenshin could fall into this category too.
As Aikido character in media I really like Gouki from the anime "Baki the grappler". Plus it is one of the best fighting animes there is.

@MartialArtsJourney You'll love it! It has less melodrama, though compared to VINLAND. It's spin on real-life historical conquerors, so non-violence is not a thing in this one, but you get see the twisted inner working and perspective of warlords.
Some historians believe that when Athens lost the war to Sparta, Socrates went from being a natural philosopher (as satirized by Aristophanes in The Clouds) to focusing entirely on questions of morality (as in Plato's dialogues), because "where did we go wrong" became the dominant question on everybody's mind. I speculate that the defeat of Japan may have caused a similar shift in perspective for Ueshiba.

@@Moses_VII John Clements is an unreliable source, the Dai Nippon Butokukai was disbanded, there was a purge of other paramilitary organisations, but there was no "ban of martial arts" like you/he describes, only restrictions to teaching it as part of school curricula. And whatever restrictions there were, were lifted in 1948... so surely he could have gone back to prewar ways then, if he had been forced to change.

I hadn't heard the "dad got beat up" story about Morihei Ueshiba before, so that one is new to me.
Relating to the pacifism legend: his son, Kisshōmaru, is on record laughing at the suggestion that his father was a pacifist (at least by western definition of a pacifist; "peace enforcement through superior force" would probably more closely match his real position). The most likely reason Morihei went to Iwama and played pacifist was he was on initially on MacArthur's war crime suspect list, as a result of all his hobnobbing with high-ranking Japanese military officers (the charges were eventually dropped).
While I'm a long-time aikido student, I find historical truth to be more interesting than myth and legend (at least, when it comes to actual historical people; I'm a still a sucker for a good story, but I prefer to recognize fiction as fiction).

Rokkas. Where do you think aikido lost it's effectiveness? Having come I believe from jujitsu which is still an effective martial art where did aikido lose this?
I believe the founder lost his interest in making an effective martial art over the years and focused on philosophy instead. He also believed he had magical powers, that didn't help. Also Aikido heavily relies on traditions instead of functionality
@@MartialArtsJourney that's a real shame, it could have been an amazing martial arts but after so many years of fighting its easy to understand him loosing interest.
If read the books of his son and students you learn that ueshiba was so infused as to present the art in a way that is not abusable. They mention, that aikido can be simple and utilitary but was made hard to learn, so the military was first interest but lost interest because of the complicated teaching. In a way it is in many martial arts, that they are presented in public in a way as not to be copied effectively, it is an asian thing. Thinking of that a lot of for example chinese students are even photographing screws to send them to asia for copy you might get a hinch on asian thought, usually for copyright they disassemble their art into many scattered sources which need to be reassembled by the student to make it work. I do not think that Rokas is able to get it nor interested anymore.

Tiny nitpick here, would just like to clarify.
Thorfinn was always disgusted with war when he was going on missions with Askeladd, he quoted "What's so fun about war?" implying that he's not like others, he's killing and pillaging for the pure sake of revenge, it's just that his hatred was too strong for him enough to be hypocritical, becoming the very thing he wants to slay just in order to act upon his vengeance.

Aikido became a peaceful and impractical martial art because America actually banned martial arts in Japan and so O-Sensei had to make aikido more peaceful and less martial to continue training.
This is according to Jonathan Clements's book, A Brief History of the Martial Arts.
When I practiced aikido I heard that O-Sensei was on a train with a drunk man who was rowdy and violent and O-Sensei wanted to beat him up with his martial arts that he had learned before, but then another man came and talked to the rowdy man and calmed him down without resorting to violence and O-Sensei was ashamed that he thought of beating him up instead.
I dont know if the story is true, it's just something one of my teachers told me once.

Sure why not, I could think of a couple Anime's that embody the aikido philosophy and practice but I'm not sure what the point is. Personally I'd be a bit more concerned with keeping the practice itself alive than say this kind of thing. Then again you were quoting Dewey in you last video like he's some sage or whatever and it's just like good one, clearly we have thought this one through. Because propping that guy up like that is not going to come back and bite you in the backside or anything, apparently you are not very good at reading signs or understand the meaning of maintaining a strategic distance between you and others in terms of association like you should or just both.
I say this with kindness, You are blind and ignorant and need to open yours to what is in front of you and see it for what it is. Not what you want it to be and yes I am talking about Dewey. learn to be more perceptive and not to tie your tether to those that will inevitably drag you down with their own hubris. I liked S1 but was disappointed by the lack of action, fights and strategies in S2. It felt like 1 big sad piano concert to me with scenery clips and occasionally some story and very little action. It was as boring as Aikido 😝

Since this is an anime made in Japan, I wonder what Scandinavians, namely, Icelandic people, think of this portrayal? I know one Chinese told me the 1970’s TV series KUNG FU was not really Chinese.
It's perfectly scandinavian.
It exagerates individuals strength to create drama, but everything else in the show is pretty accurate.
It's a shame that europes history with slavery is never told in europe, only the slavery that happened somewhere else

Japanese actor in a white wig did not really come across as a German maestro in the live action drama Nodame Cantabile. I think one German woman’s reaction was disbelief.

Other than "The last kingdom", Vinland saga is probably the most realistic depiction of medieval england that exists.

@@bamsarnie I think it's an ok take on what depression looks like. I consider depression to be a loss of sense of self. Where a part of yourself that you identify with gets lost and so your life feels meaningless and without direction. If you consider this then his actions feels wholly justified IMO.

Pacifism is a cancer. It's why Aikido sucks and it's why Vinland Saga started to suck.
Since when is vinland saga about pacificism? Thorfinn beats a lot of guy in fights after talking and negotions stop working. He even said fighting is ok as long as you actually try to talk and deescalate first.
Going into fights without trying to de escalate first is the real cancer.
A series where you break down aikido scenes in movies and anime could be very popular I think...
