TINY & EPIC Montgomery Traction Elevator @ The Soldiers & Sailors Monument - Indianapolis, IN

- (5-18-19) This is the elevator to the observation deck of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The monument is 284 ft (86.72m) tall, and has a tiny elevator that goes up to the top. You can walk up the steps for free or pay a very small fee to ride the elevator. This is probably one of the more unique elevators I have seen.
The elevator itself is in the center of the monument, with the stairs surrounding it. The shaft is open, so you can see the elevator moving within it. It is a bottom drive traction, and you can see the pulleys and governor at the top.
The elevator car is probably the smallest elevator I have ever seen. It has a very nice cab and two tiny car panels with Adams fixtures. Once you get to the top, you have to walk up a few more stairs to get to the overlook where you get a great view of downtown!

Now THIS one is AWESOME!
Totally true
this might be my all-time favorite Montgomery elevator!
That's nothing like I've ever seen! This takes epic to the next level.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
With only one car, bottom drive makes a lot of sense from a maintenance/repair standpoint. If it ever breaks down, mechanic(s) would need to climb all those stairs. BTW, the FedEx 767 is in a pretty steep bank when you pan back to it at the end. Anything beyond 30° makes passengers uncomfortable... I suppose the packages don't mind the 45° bank though...
Nor do packages complain while at 45º :-)
Amazing!!
Reminds me of old staircases with tiny elevators in the middle that you find everywhere in Europe...
2 things. 1, what about the rear doors. 2, can you not take it down from OL?
The rear door is opened from the second floor going down.
EPIC 100%!
This elevator is so tiny and cute.
Very!
epic!!
Interesting story, my grandpas company pulled the statue off the top in 2011 for renovations, also this elevator goes down to a storage basement below that I’ve been in once before with my grandpa, it’s a key switch to take it there.
Wow! That’s neat!
STL Elevators I know! If your ever in the area again let me know and I can take you on a vintage Otis micro drive at the war memorial. Indy has some great elevators!
Wonder if it was gated back in the day...
omg imagine if the cables were to snap then you would not be in the same shape again
Damn! That elevator is so tiny.
damn that levels nice
Yeah this thing is so cool.
@@stlelevators time to get on for my house
Nice find! The signage at 01:56 and 04:07 is somewhat amusing. Weird how the top part has two separate staircases, one being solely for people using the elevator going down.
I think it can get quite busy and there’s not a whole lot of room up there.
I was there in the '80s, it's pretty cool.
This is definitely a neat place.
@@stlelevators thanks for posting.
I would also just hope the safety governor would work because an elevator of that size looks way too dangerous to be running without one
If it didn't work, I don't think this would be allowed to run.
I actually rode that elevator one time going up and down
Cool!
I've never been inside the monument but now that I've seen this, I gotta go now. Except I think you have to pay a small fee to ride it
Worth the dollar I paid.
Idgaf about any fee I’m taking that thing
There appears to be a stand for someone to check tickets, but since I was here on a day when it wasn’t busy, that person wasn’t there.
Is that cab size even legal? This is definitely not ADA compliant. It is very cool though.
Legal or not, there’s really no other option here. Either have this or no elevator at all.
@@stlelevators very true. This is a historic building so I guess this is their only option.
I also remember I had a dream that I found an escalator in an old sewer system that half of the steps were missing and somehow it was still working and I had to go on it to get to the top and I had to time it so precisely to get on the remaining steps and it was scary as heck just like how that elevator looks so if I came to this building Id only ride this elevator one time but I probably wouldnt be back any time soon
And the worse part is the shaft isnt even atleast caged off so a little kid could easily stick their hand in there and get hurt from the cab or the counterweight passing
Not the children!!!
I just went there yesterday and the monument is closed in the winter months. Unfortunately, I could see a sign saying that the elevator was broken through the door.
Darn :(
Yeah, it’s a shame. Also, did you film the elevators at 1 North Meridian Street? They were Otis Black Buttons but unfortunately construction was being done on the entrance of the building when I went.
I have an aversion to stairs, but I also want to see the step plaque dedicated to Ryan White by Michael Jackson.
Cool lift. Very noisy where you are. Could hardly hear what you were saying
I would probably be cheap enough to take the stairs lol
20 floors of steps
Not that cheap.
Fuck nah I’m takin the elevator
I stayed at the Hilton Union Square San Francisco and ran up the steps all 46 floors every morning when I was there. Took me about 17 minutes.
I tried running up the steps of a fifteen story hotel once
i kinda chickened out at 9 and took the lift
WAY OLDER than 1900 😂 The magnificent truth will set you free my little debt slaves!
Well according to what I found online, the first elevator service started in 1894.
@@stlelevators “according to what I found online” photography invented 1822 and electricity in 1831, both are preposterous because there is myriad evidence that has been suppressed that both were around MUCH earlier than that.
Don’t believe everything you read, history is lies agreed upon.
