Province doesn't own the land, they lease it. The Crown (ie province) can't unilaterally change the terms of the lease to build anything else on the property
It was absolutely a Political Decision. I'm sure Ford would love for one of his Developer Friends to get a huge provincial contract to construct or renovate a structure at Ontario Place (which is further out of everyone's way to get there). Considering the ROM was shut down during COVID, they could actually close for one summer season and get ALL the roofs reconstructed. Interior Load-bearing Structural work could be done in sections while other sections are open to the public (depending on separation from noise). It's unfortunate that the Province has failed to properly maintain the ROM over recent years which would have saved everyone a ton of money by mitigating secondary damage etc. Again, I am confident that it has been a conscious decision by Ford to let the ROM deteriorate in order to have it relocated. I'm also sure that the land that the ROM currently sits on is likely ideal for Residential Development, so again Ford's "Buddies" can rake in $MILLIONS in developing/construction opportunities and to hell with the Public as far as the Science Centre goes.

I have not done the research, but I expect that the Science Centre usage was reduced around 2020 for Covid-19, but after that problem was relaxed (look at Queen's Park and the City Hall currently in use), it could have been opened to the public and promoted. The facility has a history of use as small theatres which were rented out, and other community use. I would appreciate it if someone looked into what I am posting here. I don't have the time and resources.

I grew up in the 70's/80's going there a few times and later took my own kids there in the 90's.....would have definitely gone more except for the fact it was in the middle of nowhere. I think it makes sense to put it where people have access easily through transit and close to downtown. Ontario Place sounds like a good location.
Current location will be connected to Line 5 when it opens later this year/early next. Ontario line will also eventually run through the area so it will eventually have connections to 2 major rapid transit lines (plus also easy access from the DVP). The new science center at Ontario place on the other hand is a pretty substantial walk away from the streetcar loop at exhibition station and the new facility will also be smaller and less capable to handle larger crowds. It was in the middle of no where in the 90s but the city has grown substantially since- hence why so much transit is being built up in that area right now

It absolutely makes sense to spend a few million to repair a structure that would cost hundreds of millions to replace. More importantly, ask why has it been scheduled to be torn down?

It absolutely makes sense to spend a few million to repair a structure that would cost hundreds of millions to replace. More importantly, ask why has it been scheduled to be torn down?

I was extremely conservative when I stated "hundreds of millions".
One must also ask; "When was the last time that a government completed a project on budget"?

the building may be falling apart but they are offering to repair it so it doesn't fall apart. Why spend hundreds of millions building a new building when you can spend a few million fixing the existing building.
