    I haven't decided if more of this belongs on the channel or not (it's different to what I'd usual show off in that it's a bit more of a builder) so I'll be watching how this is received. If it goes well enough, I'll probably do a poll on whether to start a clean fort with Patron names and a custom embark site, or to roll on with this training fort and play it through.
    Regardless of how it goes, I hope you enjoy. if you play yourself, remember that losing is fun!

    You don''t _need_ irrigation to farm indoors - you just need a dirt floor, which you can attain by digging out a soil tile. Water will add dirt to a stone floor, but you can also just find a wall that is made of a dirt material like sand, loam, etc... and if you dig out that wall, you can put a plot there.

    • @gerritvalkering1068
      @gerritvalkering1068 2 роки тому +3

      relative recent changes, as far as I'm concerned, reduced the growth speed on mined out soil tiles significantly and cavern tiles somewhat, so the most efficient farming is done by flooding an area to create muddy tiles. Something that has flooded more than one of my forts. Either immediately or after I'd forgotten what the lever did and accidentally pulled it. However, if you know how to do it, why wouldn't you (for efficiency's sake)

    Glad to see you playing this! Quill18 had an infamous run where he started a small empire. Unfortunately, one of the immigrants, who had gotten along well within the colony was actually a Dorf vampire. The Dorf Vampire took a sock and literally beat everyone in the entire colony to death with it. Fun times! =D

      That was an epic run indeed! The sock had 42 kills on it 😂 Although the killer wasn't a vampire dwarf, it was a zombie raised by a human necromancer. Vampires dorfs are harmless 😄 (some harm may result from exposure to vampires) Sadly the sock couldn't become a legendary item because someone didn't classify socks as weapons 🤨 😂 Apparently even Toady can't anticipate how epic DF can be.

    One of the first times I played DF, one of my dwarves was ambushed outside of the fort. His dog held them off while he escaped, but was mortally injured. Afterwards, the dog slowly crawled back to his owner, leaving a blood trail all the way, before dying just as he got to his dwarf. And the dwarf _grieved_ for his lost pet. Wow, I'd never experienced something like that in a game.

    @thomashenry4798 2 роки тому +1

    Im so used to large centralized storage spaces, but you putting the wood next to the carpenters shop is genius and I am mad that I did not think to do that before.
    What you might want to try doing is expand on the concept. Dont just put the stockpile next to the workshop. Go up (or down) a Z-level and build a house for the carpenter. Boom you have just recreated the fundamental unit for a town. A specialized tradesman who has a house on top of (or in this case below) their place of work. This minimizes time spent walking (they wake up, go to work, and only leave for things that they cant get locally) so that traffic is mostly restricted to dwarves doing transport work.
    You can even go further and use this system to build farming villages on the periphery to then export food to the town in exchange for finished goods.

    • @pinie111
      @pinie111 2 роки тому +1

      You don't want to place houses too close to workshops or high traffic areas iirc they generate noise and the dorfs will have worse sleep quality.

    • @AdHerlihy
      @AdHerlihy 2 роки тому

      Didn't even consider this possibility. That's genius. This game is mindblowingly open.

    • @pinie111
      @pinie111 2 роки тому

      @@AdHerlihy yes it is :) basically if you can think of a complex mechanic that could be in the game, good chance that it's in there XD.
      This can lead to great things or awful abhorrent FUN. I still remember the time my dwarves got slaughtered by reanimated fingers that got chopped off because some animal walked in drenched in corrupt rain and then it died.
      Also the mechanic where a male species can remote fertilize a female anywhere on the "embark square" of the map, as long as it is in there for a single frame.... I never did manage to finish that dragon hatchery but I was close :D
      The possibilities in this game are pretty much endless. You set your own goals and you try to lose in the most FUN way possible.

    • @thomashenry4798
      @thomashenry4798 2 роки тому

      @pinie111 that would be where I would go up or down one or two z levels to create the living space. Truly make use of the three dimensional map rather than just have a bunch of levels filled with unconnected stuff. You could even build back doors directly onto the apartment if you wanted.

    Long time player here also. Stayed up so late playing this that I was late for work. My first fort was unfortunately massacred by giant thrips (they some bugs) but they fought back against the fiends at least. I had one miner who was with the original embark, they were STILL ALIVE after every single thrips attack and still digging, she was tough but only one of two left alive by the bugs. I started a new one and over half of my population is visitors that decided to stay for the purpose of slaying monsters, I guess they like my fort as a vacay spot, and they are armed to the teeth. quite the difference from my first one, and it's going really well so far. Dammit Perun, you just had to do a Dwarf Fortress video!
    For context on the carp, they would start their life with the highest base swimming stat of all creature, and swimming is a form of athletics which got a larger bonus from having higher swim stat. Therefore, because they were always swimming they would get strong so fast that they could kill a dragon that decided to wade through the river to get to your fort. (I remember seeing a post and screenshots of that dead dragon in a river of carp)
    So if you saw carp in the river your fisher dwarfs were not long for the world.

    Oh this is perfect. I always wondered about what your gaming channel would be on. I figured Civilizatios, or World of Warships or War Thunder.
    This makes so much more sense. I have always been curious about this game so I look forward to this!
    I can't wait to see you take down the Spiffing Britt in TTD. 😂

    I haven't played DF in at least 10 years and I wonder if you can now separate nails from fingers or other intricate shit like that.
    Toady is a maniac. The good kind.

      One thing that can happen; although you can’t aim for that part (yet), you can strike someone with a gelding blow in combat. I should mention that gelding is an old-fashioned word for neutering.

    The traders get annoyed with you if you propose a trade they don't like, and the more you do it, the more annoyed they get. This makes them demand even higher profit margins.
    You can exploit the system in reverse though. If you make a tiny trade to begin with, like offering to buy items worth 2 dwarfbucks and paying with stuff worth 8 dwarfbucks, they get happy. Keep doing that and they get really happy. Repeat a few times and then you can get good prices on the things you really want.

    I played DF once like 10 years ago, i got to like hundreds of dwarfs pretty much following a lets play on youtube with 300 views per episode step by step, as you do, until everyone died, i think, because i managed to screw up food supply somehow.
    Idk how i did it, but i just farmed mushrooms underground that didnt need light, i think the youtube guy also build a like 20 layer deep hole, to farm trees/graze animals in, where any enemies would die from the fall, but i think there were flying enemies or smth, so you needed to guard the entrances to that part and that seemed to dangerous to me.
    Point is, atleast when i played, you didnt need to fuck around with irrigation to feed your colony without leaving the safe underground.
    Also about magma, im pretty sure that later materials force you to use magma, because they need more heat than any normal fuel can deliver :D

    Always wanted to get into Dwarf Fortress but was never hard-core enough to figure out the ASCII, closest I got was Gnomoria, however this version seems like something I can get into.

    The one issue I really have with the tutorial start is the cats. Those things kill fortresses unless they drastically reduced their breeding rate (many a fort has died to swarms of cats lagging it well before its time).
