This really makes my day, Ayub! I am glad you feel this way. As a youtuber, I should probably ask you to keep watching my video. However, as a good teacher it's my job to remind you that it is even more crucial to help you capture this excitement and motivations into ACTIONS! I have tried to make easy to follow tips in every video I have shared, so try to identify one positive habit suitable for your PhD project each week, and keep it up every day. Then add one more habit the next week. Math won't lie: 1^365 = 1 1.01^365 = 37.7 So, please try to limit to just 1-2 video per week, and focus on building up your positive habits. Even 1% improvement per day makes 37.7 times improvement over the year, and you will thank yourself for letting that happen in a year!
I like swimming, but never competitively. So I don't consider myself an athlete. Also, I have alpha thalassemia minor so I am easily light-headed when I try to be active on land. Positive language is key to PhD, parenting, and everything in life. It is also like a muscle group, we need to practice speaking positive language every day, also need to truly believe in these languages (not exaggerated positivity if you know what I mean.)
Thank you Vera for this video. This is a very timely video as I am struggling with conversing with my PhD advisor these days. I wish he would watch your videos too 😅 I don't know if this will help somebody or not but what I find works for me is whenever my advisor tells me "I don't think you can do this" or " I don't think this is possible for you" I don't refute right away. I just sit with that thought for a while, go home and think of why he is saying no and why I want to do it and also come up with some backup plans or something. Then I go back to him in a day or two and try to communicate to him my perspective of things. This usually lets us have space to think and take decisions in our own space and as a team. I guess empathy works for all people relationships
Hi Anu, so nice to hear that this is timely. I was in similar mindset when I first learned positive language, I felt a little unfair why my boss wouldn't behave the same way. Like you have said, it is additional "training" for us and often these are the experiences that make us stronger at work! Keeping a positive language and not refuting right away are two key method I have been hearing from many successful PhDs. Coming back with a constructive plan in the next meeting is exactly what I would suggest. I am so proud of you that you nailed it! Now, I hope this video helps you see more positivity in these negative scenarios. I used to be bothered by negative interactions for days, but I have realized this is only taking away my valuable energy. Recently, I have learned to assume the best in everyone, give people the benefit of the doubt whenever I could. That is the most efficient use of energy when I trust and believe in people.
Great video, Dr Vera Chan! I agree with what you have said, this is true for any workplace, be it a lab or corporate or even personal life. The same rule 🙌 🌼
Hi Mubbasilkhan, thank you for leaving a comment! It must be hard to start graduate studies during COVID, so I have made a video on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/pv0nIuS3T3s/v-deo.html Hope you will find it helpful!
Madam, my guide, she did talk clearly, she didn't believe my results, she didn't talk logically, she was really terrible, she was spread rumour s on me reg. he didn't work like that. This is my fifth year how to manage madam
Hi Uma, I hope my latest video is helpful to you! First, I hope you can remove these negative believes about your supervisor, that she is terrible/doesn't talk logically...etc. Realize these labels are going to make you see the situation with a negative mindset. Also, you CANNOT control how the other behave, but you have every control on your own work ethic. It is our role as a PhD student to define the project, set expectation, communicate data, and defend our PhD graduation. It's more practical and important to focus on the controllable, so here are my questions for you: (1) Are you carefully scheduling and tracking your time each day? Are you productive for at least 7 hr per day? (2) Are your writing and reading academically every day? (3) Are you making extra efforts in communicating your research progress and challenges, making everything professionally and clear for your busy supervisor? (4) Are you professionally handling conflicts?

@2:43 - wait, you're not an athlete? :O
Great tips :) one I struggled with as a PhD is for sure the positive language aspect.

Hi Kanmani, exactly. Our choice of language is very much like an outfit, it's better to be slightly overdressed than to be underdressed :)
