Building a house in Trinidad and Tobago

  • Back in 2013 when we first started building our house, I couldn't find any videos that documented the experience in Trinidad and Tobago. My goal here is to document a renovation (buying material, managing relationships with hardware stores and builders) along with tips for constructing your own home, with the hope that it helps someone understand the process and challenges builders and homeowners face in the Caribbean.a

    Just in case Trini didn't know this is how to build a real house. I participated in the build of my Mother House back in the 1980s and I watch many houses build in Trinidad and I must say we have it down perfect. Now I watch a house that I purchased in the US while it was being build, man when I tell it was no better than building a shed then covering it with sheet rack to make it look good. People of Trinidad you all are actually living in one of the best countries in this world stop the stupid criminal behaviour. Put GOD first then yourselve and your neighbors. Live in Peace Love. If your niegbhor doing something and you doing nothing go and help or just go and sit, talk and look on just incase he/she needs a hand. Comfort one another it has no competition .

      Our houses are bunkers compared to the sheds they build in the US.

      Hayden Richards yesss you see this on the design shows "Property Brothers". The houses are very weak and especially as they have different seasons you would think their homes should be built stronger. While our build is more expensive we live in stronger homes of brick and mortar. Loved what you said about your homeland many of us prefer to suffer out there in silence.

    You have no idea how USEFUL this is.. it might even bring in some issues of legal concern for the poor people of Trinidad and Tobago who just need to construct a home for themselves and their families but constantly falling prey to advantageous workmen etc.

  • @caribbeanpot
    @caribbeanpot 2 роки тому +33

    even for the seasoned builder (my dad worked construction all his life), there will be issues. in our case they were.. 1. Rules and regulations (as the builder was mentioning about the type of steel used today) is constantly changing according to build code. 2. Building and not being around 24-7 (my parents live winter months in Trinidad) is very challenging - so much to discuss here. 3. Reliable contractors. 4. I'd like to say "fluctuating", but in reality it's EVER Rising material costs - get it done as quick as you can. 5. Be mindful that family/friends don't always have your best interest at heart, hire a professional who you can hold accountable. So while my parents did have experience building, they do the building and the build stretched for several years.

    I wish I had seen this late last year. I hired some scamps that left me without a roof for two months, and didn't complete the work to scope. Further, I had two of the workmen come around to threaten me for their money, because the contractor (their boss- who I was paying!) told them all through the work that I wasn't paying them... and that is why they dragged their feet with the work until I fired them all.
    When I showed them my receipt book and they saw their boss' signature they apologised and left me alone. Imagine if I didn't have that!
    Very helpful video; thanks for posting. It's good. to know that there are still honest tradesmen out here. All the best with the build!

    • @lyndonbaptiste
      @lyndonbaptiste  2 роки тому +1

      Jeez-an-ages! That sounding like pressure. Thank goodness you really had those receipts, something which is easy to ignore. Luckily we had no problems like this but for those of you reading this and working with builders (friends or strangers) please get receipts. It could save you. Sometimes you pay someone and later you hearing instead of $2,000 you really give them $1,000. Licks.

    LyndonB!!!!!!!!!!, I loved this video but it caused me to have flashbacks to 2014 :) about the challenges I encountered during my home construction. You're absolutely right, pre-construction planning and research are so important. One expensive lesson I learnt was, NEVER "flip/flop" on the original agreed "drawing design" items because it changes the Scope of Works and can have huge cost/time consequences. It can make someone spend more than they initially budgeted. I enjoy watching all your videos, stay well my friend. On another note...I never would have gradated when doing my BSc. had you not sit with me and offer some on point coaching during my final project phase and for that... I'm eternally grateful my friend. I look forward to our paths crossing again in the future. Godspeed!!!

    Great video. Liked the input from various construction teams. Question: why didn't you use a mixer when doing the cement beams ? Why didn't you use a tarp to cover the work area ( would have been a simple process because it's between two houses) ? Why didn't you use the rain water ( again it would have been a simple system because you already have tanks so it was just adding gutters to the tanks, that was such a waste of water) ?

    • @lyndonbaptiste

    Do you think of yourself as a good person?
    Well, as a human race, we aren't inherently good. We all have lied, stolen, and done bad things. Our very nature inclines us do what is wrong. Don't believe me? Well why is it that when we are told not to do something, that's the very thing we want to go and do? Or we want to do something, knowing that the consequences are bad but we still want to do it anyways?
    But the good stuff you've done outweighs the bad stuff right?
    Well try that in a court of law. "Yes judge, I know I've robbed a bank, but I've given to charity, I've helped people, given food to the homeless, and a lot of other great things, so could you just focus on those things instead and let me go?". If that judge were to let you go, that judge would not be just or fair.
    It's the same way with God. Yes, God loves us with an everlasting love. But he also hates sin. Also one of his characteristics is that he's just. So if on judgment day, you say to him, "God, I know I've done some bad stuff, but I'm a good person. Look at all the goodness I have done, I pray every day, I give my tithes..." ect, he won't be just for forgetting the all the sin and letting you into heaven.
    However, only 2 types of people are getting into heaven. Perfect people and forgiven people. Perfect people don't exist. However, God is so rich in mercy that He provided a way in which we can be forgiven. He provided us with Jesus.
    Jesus was God manifested in the flesh, therefore he was sinless. Despite this, he sacfrifced himself, and all the punishment that we deserved for our sins, past, present and future, was poured out upon Jesus on the cross. Jesus suffered, bled and died so that we don't have to take that punishment. Jesus' last words on the cross was "It is finished". He said this because He paid the debt that was dividing us between God. He rose again defeating death, so that we can also. That's how much he loves us.
    Just as in a court of law, if someone pays your fine, your bail, the court can legally let you go.
    Justice and the relationship between us and God was restored because of Jesus.
    If we repent (change our minds) from trusting in our "goodness" to save us and trust ALONE in Jesus and his finished work on the cross, believing in Him as our Lord and Saviour, we can be forgiven and saved. He will wash away all our sins and transform our hearts, giving us new desires for righteousness. You can also start a beautiful new relationship with Jesus.
    Our goodness cannot save us, but Trusting in Him can. God's standard of the Law is perfection and we all fall short. But Jesus can give us His righteousness, as He took away our sin and filth.
    Doesn't mean that we'll be perfect, but it means that we'll continue to grow in the ways of the Lord
