  • If you know anything about Newfoundland, you know just how vital cod fishing is to its culture. That's why today, I'll be spending time with one of Newfoundland's LAST true cod fishermen, and exploring Twillingate, a beautiful fishing town in NE Newfoundland.
This is just day 4 (and episode 4) of a 30+ part cross-Canada adventures, guides, and advice video series, so if you enjoyed this, be sure to check out the other episodes, and subscribe for more!
    Enjoy!

Awesome video! absolutely love seeing my home province showcased like this. It's so beautiful and many of us that live here don't appreciate it near as much as we should. I grew up in Twillingate, and I couldn't be more proud. While Dave is a good guy, he is nowhere near the last fisherman on the island. Pretty well every household in Twillingate and many other small towns own a speedboat or know someone with who they can go fishing with. Most of us have deep freezers that we fill full of cod for the winter. The food fishery is still quite big, just nowhere near as big as commercial fishing once was. Again, great video and I look forward to experiencing the rest of Canada through your videos!

I tried to absorb local culture and to get a feel of everyday life. Twillingate and Annie’s were one of many highlights on my Nfld journey. Another that you briefly refered to is the présence on the West coast of Acadians. Nfld has a rich history.

Another cool video! I love Twillingate, when my Nan was alive we took many a day trips down there!
So I don’t know if this is still true about Canada but Newfoundland and Labrador is the only province that can serve wild game in restaurants. When we joined during confederation that was written in the stipulations that we could serve the wild game, like moose and caribou, because we are a province that very much lives off the land. I’m pretty sure restaurants can actually apply for a moose license.

I drove by Captain Dave’s Prime Berth so many times this summer and only got to see the gift shop. I wanted to bring my little 5-year-old boy to the museum so badly, but he’s a huge handful and need to have someone with me. He would’ve loved it though! Next time we’re home on vacation, for sure.
Twillingate is so beautiful! My great uncle Clayton was born and raised in that lighthouse. His father was the lighthouse keeper there for years. Imagine raising a bunch of little ones around those cliffs! I’d be a basket case! Lol!
Annie’s Restaurant is pretty delish. The fish & chips there is so good! I really enjoyed the baked lobster dip there as well. I never did get to Auk Island Winery. It’s hard do do those things as a single mom of a very active little boy…lol! Also, there’s a local artist in Twillingate by the name of Ted Stuckless. He’s an amazing artist, and he’s also my son’s great uncle. You’ll have to check out some of his artwork online. He’s incredibly talented.
I’m so looking forward to your next video! I’m so happy you’re sharing your adventures in Newfoundland. Hopefully when I’m done my nursing program and fulfill my bursary contract, my little boy and I will be able to move back to Newfoundland and get to enjoy it every single day. I miss home so much! ❤️

This is the first video I've seen of yours. I have only one beef: You need to pronounce "Newfoundland" correctly, consistently. (I'm sending you an email.)

True! I wanted to illustrate that less and less people are cod fishing, but the title is misleading. I've changed it to more accurately reflect the video! Thanks for your feedback :D

@@Sprouht thanks. Other than that I'm loving the videos. If you ever come back to NL I would highly recommend going along the south coast from Port Aux Basques to Bay L'argent. The most rugged and beautiful coastline you'll ever see!
