I had a weird moment where i realized that it strange to my ear to hear a director referred to with feminine pronouns. It's not like they're not around. it just feels like they're such a minority that the thought of a "woman director" is novel. That's frustrating. Art needs more female voices.
@@AoiHeartStranger I'm incredibly confused by this statement. Gender, cultural origin and financial background have some of the biggest impact on how someone views the world. The undeniable statistical truth is women are underrepresented in directorial roles, and that has certainly had a huge impact on the types of movies that get made, and the cinematic language that directors learn from to tell their stories. Having so few female directors would be like having hollywood be 95% dominated by people with rich upbringings or people who grew up in the same part of the same town. You just have a less rich artistic pool to swim in.
@@aryjarvis3161 i dont think men and women are that different mentally, so i cant really get you either. I understand the impact of cultural upbringing on your view of the world and the ways you decide to portray it, but not gender, in the same way at least. I'm a simple man, I see praises to Yamada Naoko, I like. I've read multiple interviews of Yamada Naoko and she does state her inspirations, but it's rather an abstract idea still due to not knowing the specialties of said directors. A well put video!
Love the effort you put in there videos as well as your "style". The editing is really well put together, complementing your instantly recognizable and some might argue with this but for me clear voice.
As a film student still finding my own style, this convinced me to pause and rethink things about myself despite having to submit a script in two days, especially the closing statements. Everyone can give you bits of wisdom, but I thank you for showing it, not just telling (Yes I've watched the Tell Dont Show. Been going through your's and Tony Zhou's channels to find elements that I can use in my upcoming film). Suuubbbed.
I'm just your average anime watcher, and anything related to film making is definitely way beyond my understanding. However, your video was so well put and I actually understand every point you were highlighting makes it an interesting watch. I honestly felt a bit more educated in a sense where I am a bit aware of what film makers and directors are focusing on. It's really great to understand anime or films in a different perspective, at least a little, rather than taking everything as it is. Thank you for making this video!
Not sure if you will see this comment, but thank you for helping me lift my head up after my SAT scores... hehe :) Love your videos, I wish I can discuss about anime once in a while.
Great video as always, man. And about my favourite director as well. It was really interesting to learn more about directors that influenced Naoko Yamada to become who she is now.
I love that she’s influenced by Sofia Coppola, I could see the semblance between the two film makers instantly when you played a song from the movie LIT as a background track for the animation in the beginning of the video.
Perfect timing after I saw Silent Voice this weekend, and recently finished Tamako. Rc makes the best anime analyses. Did Yamada direct episodes of Hibike and Maid Dragon or were those just other KyoAni directors mirroring the style?
Just came back from Digi rant on your content, and from the looks of it, I think he may have exaggerated a bit. I found your channel way before Digi and never found it obnoxious, more like inspiring. I haven't seen many of Digi´s videos to argue against its point of view related to your content, I can only, personally, appreciate and tell you that you're making good stuff and I feel you can improve even further. Regarding the present video, again I'm surprised by the level of research put into it and how well it is delivered to the audience (me).
WLUREM from the video I saw from him, he would be against the fact that he wasn't against the anime style. Digibro basically screams "THE ONLY WAY ANIME CAN BE GOOD IS THAT IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE MODERN STYLE AND TAKES INFLUENCE FROM WESTERN MEDIA!"
Interesting video, but I'm just curious where you got this information? Is there an article or interview about Naoko Yamada's influences? I'd like to check it out.
I didn't look too far, but there's an article on SakugaBlog called "Naoko Yamada: Filmed with the Heart" that listed her influences in film and animation near the beginning. I bet if you looked farther you could find an interview where she actually explains the specific influences
Is obvius that the classic japanese cinema is one of the biggest influences of miss Yamada, especially the refined and deep melodramas. Not only Ozu; Heinosuke Gosho, Hiroshi Shimizu or Kinuyo Tanaka could be named too. Her movies and TV series are simple but really moving
Thank you very much for doing videos like this. I have warm feelings inside me (That's the best way i can find to say what i feel.) everytime I see a video with so much dedication and passion put into it. This is the kind of stuff that inspires me and makes me feel happy.
Dude, one minute to start the video is a bit too much. Letting me know three times the channel name (on screen, title card, outloud) or that people don't start out of nowhere makes me fear the rest of the video will be just as empty. Just my personal feedback, I might be totally wrong and people love your structure but I'd rather have music and title cards for 30 seconds as an intro.
Great video. It's really encouraging to see people like Yamada and even yourself who treat anime as a legitimate art form worthy of analysis and technique, both as a consumer and as a creator.
You know what I have not seen most of her work yet, but this makes me really want to try K-on. Her directing seems really impressive. Really well put together video. Granted I do wish there was a bit less spoiler heavy stuff XD Still one of your best videos yet.
Great video man. I wish more people focused on actual direction. Being pretty deep into sakuga has been a lot of fun, because that community shares a lot of my interests, but I don't feel like I have very many people with whom I can genuinely discuss actual film direction with, rather than just the animation, I'm so much more interested in framing, color, lighting, compositing, etc. Yamada is just phenomenal. I watched Koe no Katachi in theaters yesterday(my third watch), and it is just the greatest, to be honest.
Great video essay, really thank you for hard work ❤️ But there is a huge mistake - Serhiy Parajanov was a Ukrainian and Armenian film director, not a soviet. Actually Serhiy suffered from soviet regime, censorship and persecution. He couldn't continue film making because soviet leadership detained him on a fabricated case and sent to a penal colony. Calling this talented man a soviet film maker is disrespect to him and his works

Kind of like Nerdwriter and how all his stuff becomes trending so easily.
Jeez RCAnime. So far this is one of your best videos. With all your works I could feel the passion, research and hardwork you put into it. Especially this one.
This was a great video and very true. Without her direction i dont think the things she has worked on would have been received as well. Like The Shape of voice. One helluva a great movie and since i spent a lot of time in Japan just listening to the ambience and background sounds took me back and made that movie for one that much better. Yamada is a great director.

Pinning this!
Definitely a minority group; some female directors to shout out:
(Film)
Sofia Coppola
Greta Gerwig
Josephine Decker
Lynne Ramsay
Céline Sciamma
Agnès Varda
Naomi Kawase
Lulu Wang
Nora Twomey
(Anime)
Atsuko Ishizuka
Sayo Yamamoto
Haruka Fujita
Rie Matsumoto
Mari Okada
Chiaki Kon
