It's important to distinguish between communalism and authoritarianism. The former is always a right wing phenomenon while the latter is a general side effect of power (left, right or centre). What is dangerous about the current regime in India is an extraordinary combination of the two as suggested by Prof. Mehta.
Communalism is a left wing bro. Communalism in the right wing genrally in India's case is reactionary. Look at the left they are pandering to islamic extremism and thinking everyone will just do the same. Not everyone are fools. The communist party and congress parties are making alliance with Islamist party and bow down to Islamist. This interview is a lesson how interviews,discussions need to be conducted. Mitali Mukherjee asked some extremely important questions. They were well phrased, meaningful, pithy and cut to the heart of the issues. She then let Professor Mehta answer those questions without unnecessarily interrupting with inane,idiotic observations of her own. Wish our news anchors learnt something from her. And even Mr Karan Thapar needs to take a lesson or two from how this interview was conducted. It is an extremely enriching interview.
She is not in a hurry to interrupt the speaker by her facial expressions or movement of hands like Karan, which is extremely annoying.
We would have loved her to interview many more eminent personalities.
If mainstream news channels conduct news like this, how will the circus carry on?? It's the people watching those channels who feed them not the other way around.

More than 60 % of voters did not vote BJP, yet this Party is in power. Above all, BJP proudly claims that majority of people have voted them to power.

Good discussion. On the point of Modi's core vote bank it comprises of three parts. The hard core RSS or hyper Hindutva section which is at best 10%. The next is the general Hindu section with some education and understanding but generally shallow in their ideas about what India stands for. They have been brainwashed against the Congress and the Gandhi family. This is about 15% at the most. The third section are the genuinely poor who's votes can be bought by freebies, cash, liquor etc. They are also 15%. So at least 60% did not vote for Modi. The critical section is the middle one with some education. If they break away Modi will fall back to 30% in 2024. Without a coalition BJP can't stand. On the other hand the opposition coalition can get around 40-45% vote share. That's the nightmare looming for BJP.
the success of the bjp in "brainwashing" the second section against cong and gandhis is not reflective of the persuasiveness of their propaganda but the inefficiency of the leadership of gandhis in convincing the people of the opposite.

I like Bhanu for a simple fact he is absolutely honest, Even if you ask a question extremely critical to Mr.Modi(A fan disclosure) he give all views, pro and cons both, I have seen few interviews. God bless him... though I do disagree with him (illogical but God and bhanu forgive me :)) )
Listening to the learned prof feels is so stimulating and at the same time the message is so depressing. It is clear that none of the current opposition jokers can bring about the kind of change you have described, so the opposition rising up tonsave the day is never happening. Bread and butter issues like economy and rule of law seems to have lost all relevance in electoral politics and even black swan calamitous events like the pandemic are proving to be nothing but minor speed bumps on the hindutva highway. And so far the dimwits have been operating under the fig leaf of the system and has only tried to subvert it from within, given any signs of losing power, it is safe to expect the sangh to abandon the democratic pretenses and resort to full scale savagery.
The wire does politically informative shows but it's in English and majority of voters does not understand English so we may not see any impact of this awareness on election results.
The wire should consider dubbing these interviews so it can be reached to the people who have the ability to change political situation through voting.

Don't be pessimistic
India did not deserve democracy in the first place after independence. We are not mature enough to handle too much democracy. At the most, it can be controlled one. Too much freedom of speech has wrecked the country. We move one step forward and are pulled back three steps immediately by the unruly politicians, trade unions, hartals, activists, right to secure stay order from courts. Even after enjoying unrestrained freedom all these years I see Meetali Mam is still looking depressed. Let us try China way ( not literally ) for next 3 decades to take country forward. Right to strike should be taken away. One child per couple will help, no free beis, no dynastic political outfits.With Covid 19 around it will be a miracle to come out one piece, leave aside +ve growth.
It is broadly said by the interviewer saying that the opposition has to be united to fight an election and win.I further make a suggestion to the opposition to choose primmisterial can dit ate first and foremost and then think about fighting the election.otherwise there is no point for the opposition to fight the election.

The opposition should have a different narrative to the existing BJP narrative. The opposition should offer to the citizens what they can to improve their lot.

Democracy is an evolution of course corrective measures over a period of centuries towards an egalitarian society. Expect diversions along the way to course correct. The fact remains that aspirational India has tasted the nectar of self-reliance from the late 90's onwards, and there's no going back once you've taken a bite from Eve's apple, excepting political maneuvering in the Hindi heartland which remains the greatest threat to India's perennial rise to future glory.

Many opposition party think due to corona people are angry and they will vote against BJP. For those political party look at election of Five large state election which happened after Covid i.e Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Kerela and Tamilnadu. except Tamil Nadu every state government came to power again. Opposition has to work hard as BJP is working. Corona did not come to fight with a political party, only political party has to fight with political party.

When most of the 60% votes gets United, this 60% will increase to 80%. It's all about opposition needs to recognise the moment. The moment is to save ideology of India. If opposition still thinks about their own growth then their will be no India. The kind of federal structure we are in, it's difficult to maintain it with current thinking. Then in that scenario, how will you grow as a political party?
I don't think India will be seeing an alternative government anytime soon. No matter how strong or week the opposition is. In US democrats weren't strong. Biden wasn't even a worthy candidate against Trump but covid threw Trump out. In India I don't see that outrage against the government for messing up during covid.
Indian scenario is very different. Structure of society which carries within it various caste, religions, lingual difference, regional differences too restrains people from believing each other. In such a scenario a uniform consensus will never form.

In an article in Indian Express, Shri Pratap Bhanu Mehta had written that he would not find Ram at the new temple at Ayodhya. Since then I have been asking him at every opportunity if he found Allah at Gyanvapi Mosque at Kashi or at the Shahi Idgah at Mathura. Both were made by Aurangzeb after demolition of Hindu temples. What kind of the educator is he that he has not replied to my question, which was raised by his own writing?
