Suzuki Intruder VS1400: Bleed Clutch & Brake Lines - Rebuild Part 7

  • Today I will show you how to reverse bleed the clutch and the brakes of my Suzuki VS1400 Intruder.
    The Suzuki Intruder VS1400 has a reputation for being one of the most difficult motorcycles to bleed, reverse bleeding is the solution!
    The reason for this is that the Suzuki Intruder clutch has a very long hydraulic pipe. The clutch pipework travels from the master clutch cylinder on the handlebars, down the length of the bike where it then joins on to a solid metal pipe. This metal pipe then bends and twists around the body of the bike until it eventually ends up at the clutch slave cylinder.
    I have installed steel braided hoses on my bike, and if you are doing the same, the reverse bleed method on the Suzuki VS1400 Intruder is likely going to be what gives you the solution to this head-scratcher.

    This is the biggest project I have taken on, The bike will be completely stripped down to the frame, the engine will be removed for new piston rings to be installed, the wiring harness is going to be rewired and the entire bike overhauled, ready for spring 2020....I hope.

      @ Sorry I missed that tonight my friend drove 20hrs straight from California to Colorado to buy a really sweet motor coach but when he drove to denver to show me the charging system quit charging anything so I have been working on that all day and it is now 2am here and just quit for the night. Cant wait to watch the feed tho. Always learn so much. You got a cool groove and genuinely strike me as someone we would enjoy just hanging out with. I am full time on the road in a vintage 64 dodge rv that I have built a recording studio in as well as hot rodding the rv.. 2 years into it and then I just got a 94' intruder 1400 bored out to an 1800. Till finding your channel I was wondering if I should have just drove to the insane asylum. I know harleys and yamahas but not much on suzuki bike systems. Plus your intro music is awesome too. I play guitar, bass and drums from blues to classic rock to industrial and death metal. Again verrrrrrry thankful for the time, effort and class you put into your videos. Cheers!!! #hotrodrvtv

    Thanks for this. Had my 2001 Volusia into the shop because it wouldn't shift up into 2 3 or 4, only 1. Guy wanted $1k USD for clutch work. Videos like these make me think I can do it myself, so I just got it back in 1st gear and will try a fluid change. I have fixed three little scooters on my own so this is just another learning opportunity.

    I bought a '94 vs1400, clutch and brake fluid had turned to paste so I replaced both master cyclinder internals, clutch slave cyclinder internals, bought new braided lines and fitted new brake piston seals.
    Now the front and rear brakes are fine, used silicon fluid the same as on my vmax 1200, but the clutch on the vs1400 kept disenging when the bike was hot. Bleed out a little fluid and it's Ok for a while but then does it again.
    Local garage says the master cyclinder needs rebuilding although this has been done, so I took it apart and checked it over, everything OK, put it back together but now I can't for the life of me fill the system, fluid just will not go through no matter how hard I squeeze that syringe and won't go through when pumping the lever.
    There is no blockage that I can think of as I blew down the lines before and air got through and the lever was pumping air through as I could feel the pressure when I put my finger over the end and both holes in the master cyclinder were clear.
    I'm at my wits end here as I feel I've done everything right but something is amiss, any clues mate ?

    Going to redo my clutch fluid on a 1995 Suzuki intruder 800. Did it once thinking that would take care of my problem. That was, after riding 10 miles, the bike starts to not run. Motor RPM are up but, the bike clutch stops working and I have to sit a bit, till it cools off, then it works great for another 10 to 15 miles and the clutch quits working. Replace the clutch disc and the problem still there. So, I wonder if like you said I might have air in the line. Going to try working on it tomorrow and do like you said Thanks...........Bobby..... Currently have no pressure on my vs1400 clutch lever. Stripped the slave cylinder down and replaced the seals/polished the piston. Replaced the fluid and still have no pressure on the lever until it’s pumped then get minimal pressure. Took off the slave and with constant pumping on the lever, the piston moves a little. I’m gonna try reverse bleeding the clutch this evening to see if this helps. I did suspect the clutch maybe frozen but warmed the bike up, switched off the engine, engaged gear and rocked the bike back and forth it still didn’t help. Reverse bleeding is my last option before the clutch comes out.

    Just curious, when you first applied pressure to the rear brake valve through the siphon, there was air in the line. Do you bleed that through the system til no bubbles because it didn't show any going through?

  • @human1513
    @human1513 9 місяців тому

    Good video.
    I clean around the bleeder nipple and reservoir cap before starting so no dirt can get into the system.
    I always reverse bleed brakes and clutches whenever posible.
    Why fight nature as air always wants to rise when in a fluid?
    The fluid also changes colour because moisture is absorbed into the fluid through the rubber hoses over time.

    • @human1513
      @human1513 3 місяці тому

      The master cylinder diagphram is to isolate the fluid from the atmosphere air. It does nothing regarding applying pressure.

    Hello I new to the bike world I just purchased a Suzuki Intruder VS 800 . The bike is in really great shape but there's no pressure on the clutch but I watched your video and am going to flush/ bleed the system in your video. My other issue that arose is it leaks gas out of the bottom carburetor through the vent line Bowl. The bike has sitting for a few years like 3yrs in a garage there was a little bit of old gas in it and I added new . It does start and run . What could the leak be ,does it need to be rebuilt or cleaned

    I have two questions.
    How much oil is there in the whole clutch system when it is filled up?
    When you fill up the surenge with the breakfluid Dot 4, do you refill it many times, or is it enough fluid in the surenge to fill the system up?
    Thanks for all help.
    Best wishes from Tommy Winter.

    Hey man quick question is the oil pressure switch located behind that chrome cover aswell near the kickstand switch and neutral switch? Trying to figure out why mine keeps shutting down randomly at idle and the oil light pops up but then fires right back up no problem so i just wanna test the pressure switch but cant find it

    •  Рік тому

      Hi Travis. Good question. The oil switch is on the other side of the engine by the foot brake controls. It has a rubber boot over it and has a small brass screw on it for the wiring. If your oil light isn't coming in before it dies, I doubt its the oil pressure as the oil light will always show when the bike is not running. You should notice that the oil light also comes on when you turn the bike ignition on before hitting the start button. Then after it's running it goes out. Completely normal. But please do check what you think requires checking, just be cautious of chasing red herrings down rabbit holes ;)

    Put your off spring on syringe test drive duty. Cover the reservoir with a layer of plastic sandwich wrap with a few pin holes towards one end. With a little air trapped between add a second layer of wrap with pin holes in the opposite end. Use rubber bands to seal the wrap to the reservoir, brake fluid won't play nice with electrical tape adhesive. Explain the anticipated full level and a few important bits of fluid equality then leave to see what happens. Then it's time to leave to see what happens...
    And perhaps grab a little Justin Kase cat litter...
    Kids quickly learn to bleed and suck air...or they don't. It's all good.

      You should be able to start the bike with the kickstand down as LONG as you are in Neutral gear my friend, if you can't then you have a bad kick stand switch.

      It may be that you need to drain the lines and strip and rebuild the controls/masters. They could be seized from lack of use and need cleaning and new parts.

    Hey Hagar, I hope your still fine and the purchase of your house worked out. I'm really looking forward to see more of your videos.
    I've recently bought myself an Intruder and changed all the rubber-hoses to steel-braided lines. The bleeding of the brake-lines was no problem, but the clutch is driving me crazy. I've tried your method, the classic method of pumping the fluid with the main cylinder and I tried to bleed the line with an hand-driven vacuum-pump - nothing worked. When I pull the clutch I can move the bike but I can feel the clutch is not fully disengaged. It feels like the last 1/100mm of movement is missing. What do you think, is there still air in the system or is there another failure?
    Have a good time!

    •  2 роки тому

      Hi Quack, we got our keys about 2 weeks ago :)
      So what i would suggest is pump the clutch and build up some pressure then hold the lever in and open the cylinder bleed valve and see if any bubbles come out of the cylinder. Like a traditional bleeding method.
      If you are certain there is no air left in the line, but its not right still, take the top cap off of the clutch master and tie the lever in the compressed position on the handlebar over night and leave it. This will open the master allowing any trapped air bubbles to rise up.

    • @quacklength474
      @quacklength474 2 роки тому

      @
      Hey Hagar, sorry for the late reply, I've been on vacation for a few days. Thanks for you're advice and I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I've already tried to leave the clutch-system under pressure over night. I've also tried a pneumatic driven brake bleeder, parked the bike on a slope to let any air rise and tried everything else a second, third and fourth time - but there was still no change.
      Finally I figured out the clutch was just a bit sticky. After I started the engine on thursday evening (to bring the Trude in a shop) the bike was rolling free in 1st gear with the clutch disengaged and the problem is gone.
      Have a good time!

      You could try the conventional bleeding method, open the bleed valve and pump the clutch lever, hold the lever in, close the bleed valve, release the clutch lever and repeat for about 5 hours and you might get it to work. But i would recommend buying a large syringe and following this method, 5 minutes and it will be done.

    Well, it did not work. I took the handle apart and removed the inside rubber seals and spring. I notice on your video the smaller hole had fluid going thru it. For some reason the one on the bike, nothing comes thru. could that small hole be plug up really bad, that it does not work at all. Thinking of just getting a new master cylinder and go from there......Bobby

      Hi Bobby, if the system hasn't been used/bled in some time youbmay well have a blockage somewhere in the system. Is this on the clutch or brake line?

    Anyone know where i can find the cable thats located under the bleeder valve? It connects to the master cylinder.

      It comes in two seperate pieces, a flexible clutch pipe and a rigid, pre-curved pipe. If you check out the engine removal video you can see me disassemble the line.

    Hello, I appreciated your video and applied it to my 81 Yamaha Virago XV 750 for the front brakes- replacing the line. It all worked as you showed in the video - fluid filled the reserve. I then tried some conventional bleeding from above as I was getting no resistance with the cylinder. Saw few air bubbles but then none and no resistance. Tried more reverse bleed, flows right into the reserve. Any ideas?- just keep at it and try to clear the air out of the cylinder? -Geoff 973-896-8334

    remove all the old liquid and now that I put the new liquid the lever does not catch tension

      That is why you need to reverse bleed the system to prime it again.
