Great video Chris! Tons of creative ideas!
Thank you!
Thanks Chris for sharing 👍🏻
Thank you for watching!
It's amazing what this does for the price. Thanks for share.
Great safety upgrades by them.
Yea I think so too. They should sell the shield separately. I’m sure everyone would do an upgrade to their old machine.
Thank you. You sold me on it.
Thank you for this!
Great video...useful information and suggestions for production and consistency....
Thank you
Appreciate this video so
Much! Think i will go ahead with this model!
Thank you. You’ll love it.
cool video - nice presentation Chris

Great video Chris! I've not tried cutting with mine yet. Got sucked into the engraving rabbit hole first. LOL
Thanks Sam. I feel like there’s so many things I need to try with this thing.
Neat demonstration. The last time I tried ordering a laser like this the company went out of business, gotta check this one out.
These guys have been around for a little while.
@@rogerryden1962 Thanks for the input. I understand about material waste and the annoyance of it. I looked into creating a strength/speed chart for lasers in the past. I don't know the name but it uses about 3in. sq. piece of material and burns at 0-100% speed and 0-100% strength in grids. Or at least mine was 3 in. This way I can create a little file cabinet of materials I have used and have a reference guide if I wanted to burn/engrave to a certain depth or level. Perhaps that may help you as well?
I'd love to see you do some marquetry with it. I don't particularly like the burnt edges and would love to see your solution. Good luck with it and have fun!
That would be interesting to try. I’ll have to order some veneer.
You'll get cleaner cuts with an air-assist nozzle. Makes a night and day difference in the browning around the cut lines. But the edges of all wood that is cut with a laser is going to be brown because you are burning the wood to cut through. There's no way around that unless you use a CNC router.
Save your settings in your library for different materials. You can click on the layer, then add it to your library with a description like....Balsa wood 5mm Cut
Good tip. Thanks
I just ordered mine yesterday.
Awesome!
I’m really surprised that Lightburn software does remember the settings of each project when saved. On my vinyl cutter software and on my plasma cam software the software will remember the settings of each project when I save them. When I want to create a old project I just open up the project and the settings are all there. I just bought this ORTUR laser master 2 pro and have not used it yet and have not played around with the Lightburn software yet, still working on finishing up my small workshop. I love all the projects you did, I can’t wait to play around with my new laser toy. Thanks for the video.
It’s got a lot of features for software that doesn’t cost a ton of money. Thanks for watching.
Hi Chris and thanks for the great video! I have made a couple of cutting boards for Christmas gifts (from walnut, maple, and cherry) and was looking for a way to engrave them before applying finish. Do you think the Ortur be good for this or might I need something more powerful?
Thanks. It would be great for that. It’s plenty powerful.
Hello…what do you recommend to place under the material you are cutting?
Just ordered mine yesterday. Excellent video. I also have a Makeblock that is contained and this is going into an office so I am no sure how to get rid of the fumes. Work in progress on that one.
Awesome. That’s something I need to work on also. Let me know what you come up with.
I have seen DIY fume extractors with these smaller laser setups if you have access to a window. Essentially:
A plastic bin or make a box that fits over the machine.
Put in a vent mount.
Attach a dryer or vent hose to the mount for about 2 feet.
Connect an inline duct fan to the hose. A cheap one works fine, about $20 but the one I have is a variable speed for about $35.
Connect another hose to the other side of the duct fan and put it out the window.
You can put a block of wood in the window with a vent mount so you don't have to keep an open window.
Now, this will NOT filter the fumes, but you should not be lasering vinyl or the like with this type of laser.
You can buy one of these and tubing. Build a box around your laser engraver with a hole for the tubing. Run the tubing out a window.

Great video, Chris. Have you tried cutting thru balsa wood? How many passes for let's say 1/4" thk? What power setting? Thanks.
It would probably cut a little easier than the plywood. You could probably keep the settings the same but only do a couple passes
good work
Thanks
I still have the previous model. I almost never use it though. I use a JTech on my Shapeoko 99% of the time. Love the upgrades they made though. I recommend bring your power down to 60%. It'll prolong the llfe of the laser. It takes longer, but worth it for me.
I considered one of those, but would prefer not have my cnc tied up if I don’t have to.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Yeah I dont' have enough volume where it's an issue. I get a lot more laser work than CNC work.
@@StevenDavisPhoto I’m pretty sure I’ll just be upgrading to a larger laser eventually. It’s super addictive.
@@ChrisPowellFSD yeah I get way more money from my laser than my cnc
@@StevenDavisPhoto it just seems so much more enjoyable to run also. No hearing protection required. No concerns about crashing. It’s great.
I've been doing so much research online. Which laser to purchase so Thank You Chris great video
Thank you. Let me know if you have any other questions about it.
Hi Chris ,great review .. sorry if I missed it but did u use a LF laser or the SF I’m torn which to buy … thanks so much
Thank you. So originally they didn’t have that option. This would probably be the equivalent of the SF. If you plan to do more engravings than cutting, go with the SF. If you plan on cutting stuff out more often, go with the LF. Both are capable of doing both things, but each is better at what it’s designed for.
Sorry, another comment. The new LM can also move the Z up and down to follow non-flat surfaces. It's super cool.
That’s pretty cool.
How does it do that? I have the new LM with the adjusting screw to move the Z up and down but it's all manual.
Thanks Chris. Seems like this would have no issue cutting veneer?
No it shouldn’t. I’m going to order some to try.
Hello Chris, what do you use to to attache the leather patches to hats? Thank you for the video, very informative.
I think the nicest thing would be to stitch them on, but I’m sure there’s some adhesive you could use.
Great video! Looking to buy a laser for making custom unions, i have no experience with Lightburn, and videos you recommend to get started?
Thanks. I had watched some from the edge of tech channel.
Man looking for laser engraving machine that works on acrylic wanna make RGB backlates for video cards will the lm2 pro do the Job for both cutting and engraving on acrylic?
Nice video. I heard you say 20w, I thought Ortur only sells a 10w at this time. They mentioned coming out with one, just not yet.
At the time, they referred to this as a 20 watt because that’s the input power. It’s really a 5.5 watt. When they say 10 watts on the new ones, they really mean it’s a true 10 watts of output power.
So many great ideas. I think I'll try them asap. What kind of paint is the blue one you removed with lesser? And is it wood?
Thanks
Yea it was just Ace spray paint. It was wood, but it also works on other materials.
@@ChrisPowellFSD thanks 👍🏻
Thanks for the demonstration! Im actually researching to buy it in a few days and your video is helping my buying decission. Quick question: im planning on engraving wood but would love to cut 5mm hard wood. With enough passes (like plywood) will it go through? Also whats the max depth it can cut? Thanks!
The big logo I did was 5mm plywood. I haven’t tried hardwood, but I would imagine it can do thinner stuff no problem. I’ll have to test it out.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Please help. All of a sudden, ortur/Lightburn is filling in letters instead of burning them as they look. For instance, the letter "O" will look like a solid circle. What happened? I changed computers and Lighburn instances and it still happens. Also, it seems like the power of the laser is extremely higher than 100% when it was never like that. thanks!!!
@@7awrence any chance you have multiple vectors stacked on top of one another? Try deleting the parts of the o to see if there’s more than one.
@@ChrisPowellFSD I just swapped out the power board and it went back to normal. It's even printing clearer. All the problems are fixed. Very upsetting that it was something so simple. Thank you so much for responding!
@@7awrence glad you figured it out
Does laser work use any consumables? Example: welding wire for mig welding or plastics for 3D printing.
Nope. Nothing like that. All you need is whatever materials you plan to engrave.
Thank you for making this video! We just bought one and I'm eager to start creating things. Where did you find that Navy logo? Is there a place we can purchase designs? Thanks in advance.
I get most of my designs just by searching on google images.
Great video thanks. I am buying a laser and needed some basic info on this model.
How's it going? Are you getting better results? Does it engrave slate?
Yea it’s going great. It does a really nice job engraving slate. I’ve been doing coasters I get in bulk from Amazon.
Thanks for answering I really do appreciate it I will be placing my order today.
You're good at videos and it's been really helpful thank you
Hi Chris Great Video well made. Can this Laser cut Foam as I make Molds to make concrete statues and that's one of the materials I use?
I haven’t used it myself, but have seen others do it. There’s some videos on UA-cam.
Is it possible to use an yrr3.0 with it?
Is this machine sturdy enough that is can be moved to a shelf when not in use and to a work surface when needed?
Yea, it’s pretty light weight, so moving it isn’t an issue. There doesn’t seem to be any flex in the frame.
Nice video. I’d love to see a video of your settings for your unions. How did you burn them but they’re still white? Thanks for the content.
I think I’ll put together a quick start guide and put info like that in it. I just fine tuned the speeds to burn the paint off, but not burn the wood. I believe it was about 400ipm feed at 80%.
@@ChrisPowellFSD awesome. I’m looking to get the same engraver specifically for unions on flags. Yours is the only video I’ve watched to show the capabilities to do that. Thanks again for replying and sharing!
Yes. I would like to see a video on your unions also. Great job.
I as well would like to see a union video! Especially making the stars on the program
What a great and informative video!! I do have one question though before purchasing. Do you happen to know the differences between the "Pro" and the "Pro-LF"?
Thanks. They added a couple new laser modules. The short focus and long focus. The long is better for cutting through stuff. Still works great for engraving, but is better optimized for cutting. Both are the same power output.
@@ChrisPowellFSD thanks for the speedy reply. So by the way you explained it, the LF would be best bang for the buck? Since it can do both?
That’s what I use now.
Is there a specific spray paint you need to get to avoid fumes from the laser cutter?
Not that I know of. Anything would probably produce toxic fumes.
Great video! What kind of spray paint did you use for the American Flag Union? It looks like the perfect choice.
Ace, but anything should work.
Good stuff! Just got mine in this weekend. Where’d you get that navy union file? Thinking about making a flag for my brother in-law.
I just pieces it together from the flag file on my website and the Navy seal I found on google images. I can send it to you if you need it.
Hi Chris, does the machine you are.using in this video have the LF os SF laser module? This is a option while purchasing and im ot sure what to take.
It wasn’t an option when I got mine. The SF is better for engraving, and the LF is better for cutting. I did a test of both on the Aufero video I did about a month or so ago.
Hi Chris! Your tutorial helped me make my decision on buying this machine. Question: I'm looking to engrave a design on a larger piece of wood. Can this machine be sat on top of a larger piece of wood with the same results, or will I have to make adjustments to the base or laser head since it will be further away from the wood surface than a smaller piece of wood that fits inside of the frame. Thanks for any help you can provide!
Yes you should be able to do that. There should be enough adjustment in the height of the laser unit.
Thanks so much! I'm ordering it today! Keep up the good work!
Very cool, any way I could ask for a link to the cork?
I totally forgot to put that in the description. Thanks for reminding me. Here it is. amzn.to/2UaMnEn
How would this machine work on denim?
Hi Chris, thanks for the info. Will this machine etch glass? TIA.
Yes it will. I just tested the new Ortur and did a short bit on it in my latest video. You just need to paint the glass or coat it with something it can burn through. Clear glass is too reflective. Then you can just remove the paint once its done.
@@ChrisPowellFSD It's not too reflective, it's transparent. so if you want to etch glass you need to paint it first then use lacquer thinner to remove the paint afterwards. If you don't believe me, put a shiny surface under the glass and then burn something. It will etch the bottom side of the glass but not the top side as the laser bounces off the shiny surface.
What application do you use in programming yourdesign? Is that included when you buy the engraving machine?. Thanks :)
Lightburn. No, it’s something you’ll have to buy. You can also use Laser Grbl which is free.
Also, if you're doing a lot of cork bottoms for coasters, invest in a rubber stamp for your logo. Way faster.
Good advice
Hello Chris your video is very helpful but would this work great with vinyl records?
The fumes produced when cutting vinyl are highly toxic and can damage the laser and you. It’s best to cut them out it’s a cnc router.
Hi Chris I have been doing some research on buying a laser. I noticed how the laser took the paint off the flag union. Im surprised there was no charring. How did you do that just applied spray paint and did a pass on the laser? Thanks
Yup. You just need to play with the speed settings until you get it to where it will burn off the paint without burning the wood.
Do you think this would be a good machines to cut small objects for jewelry like earrings in wood no leather? What about acrylic? TY
Yea it works great for wood and leather. I have to do more experimenting with acrylic. I know you can engrave it, but I’m not sure about cutting.
Is this something I could buy to start making some money to later upgrade to a higher end machine? It seems functional enough to make some crafty stuff to open up shop.
Definitely. There’s a lot of people who have started with one of these and started a small business. Some have bought multiple Orturs while others have upgraded to larger co2 machines.
@@ChrisPowellFSD hey bud, thanks for the reply! Almost done thinking about it and getting it. I currently cut stickers and have 2 plotters, so I want to wet my feet first with the laser. Thanks again for the reply!
Hi! Can this 20W Ortur laser engraver make a nice result on anodized cartag or dogtag? Thank you!
Yes it can engraved anodized aluminum.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Okay! Thank you!
Hi Chris. Can the height of the laser module be adjusted up and down, or is it necessary to buy the z-height adjuster accessory? thanks
Yes, it has a dovetail mount built into it that you slide the laser up and down. That’s how you focus it for different materials.
@@ChrisPowellFSD great, thanks Chris
They make an accessory you can add to the laser head so you can twist a knob to raise and lower it. It really beats loosening and tightening that screw. I put it on mine and it's one of the best accessories you can buy for the machine.
Great video, Chris. Any insight on using this to engrave cellulose acetate? I need a solution to engrave names on the temple piece of eyeglasses frames.
I actually had to look up exactly what that was, but then I also went and did a little poking around about engraving it. I see people do it with a co2 laser, but nothing about a diode like this. If I can find some I’ll give it a try.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Many thanks

Hi there, I am looking at this to be able to etch the back of mirrors and see the image on the other side.. would you say it would work for this, please? Thank you
Yea I’m pretty sure it will. It can’t engrave the mirror itself, but it can engrave the coating on the back. Similar to the glass tiles I did.
Ahhh, a gateway laser… looking forward to the review on your next laser…
Haha you know me well.
I have a 45watt FSL and have outgrown it… I know the laser bug.
If this is a gateway laser will it eventually lead me to roaming the streets in search of a stronger laser?
@@dougeing6521 Yeah, pretty much. It's amazing what desperate people will do to finance lasers…
Will this be able to lightly etch designs onto 2mm thick stainless steel ?
Yes it will. It actually permanently discolors the surface of the stainless. You can’t scratch it off unless you sand the material off, but it doesn’t actually engrave into the surface and remove material like it does with wood.
Hello I am looking to buy a cnc for making magnets and frying pictures and that it can cut magnets so which one would you recommend thank you.
I’m not sure if this would cut through the magnet material. I’d have to give it a try.
I'm looking for a laser engraver to make custom art designs on jeans/denim. Would this make/model be good for customizing jeans?
Yea it should work. I’ve seen people use it on canvas. You’d just have to experiment and get the right settings for the material.
20watts will be power consumed not power output. Might be worth pointing out to newbies to avoid comparison to more powerful 20w co2 lasers
👍
Chris I really appreciate your videos, you've been a huge help but I've been through the ortur nightmare. Their products are junk. In one year I went through two laser heads and three motherboards. They make you jump through multiple hoops to get replacements for something that's under warranty and they also make you pay for shipping. I needed a new motherboard and couldnt pay the shipping so had it mail through the regular mail...it made it to my house 3 weeks later and was in a plane envelope, no static bag or packing material for protection. I'm sorry but they are junk. Youd be better of getting a K40 co2.
Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear you had all of those issues. I’ll keep putting this one through the paces and see how it holds up. I see where they have had some issues in the past and seem to be trying to turn stuff around. I guess time will tell. What did you end up buying to replace it?
I was so excited about ordering my Ortur from your channel, but sorry to say the service(or lack of) I got from Ortur left me so dissatisfied I need to write about, I ordered my Laser pro on the 5th of April and 3 other items and even included express post(because I live in Australia) it was suppose to arrive on the 17th, I had no contact about my order by the 12th so I got in touch via email only not the get a reply, I went online (14th)and was able to chat with someone, who gave me tracking for all four item. Yes I have received 2 of my four items last week(date stamped the 14th) I then sent another email requesting about my other items and still havent got a response. In all my online transactions I have never felt so dissatisfied than now. I cant honselty say I have received service from Ortur.
Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with them. They’re pretty active on their Facebook group. You might get more help there.
What brand of blue spray paint is that?
Ace
Will this cut into 2 color plastic to make small signs?
It would depend on what type of plastic. Some produce toxic fumes and aren’t safe for cutting with a laser. Acrylic is fine to use and will cut.
What spray paint do you used
The tall cans of acrylic enamel from Ace Hardware.
Do you have an air assist ?
I didn’t at the time of recording for this video, but I added one in the enclosure build video.
Very interesting video. I have 2 CNC machines and am always interested in these types of videos.
I assume Ortur approached you to review the product. How did that work out? They have ask me and I am always hesitant to get involved with doing this.

Newbi here - How would I laser the surface of an object 5" high?
You can put blocks under the feet. Some people use tin cans, blocks of wood, or 3d printed spacers. Check out my last video on the enclosure I built. I designed it to work with different height objects.

We need to come together as a community to post our speeds/power rates for different projects. Is there someplace I can share mine and see others? I don't think it makes sense for all of to experiment from scratch. At least we'll have a baseline to start from.
I’ve seen some baseline sheets on the Ortur Official Facebook page.
