1:21 Trying to be a perfectionist is actually one of the worst mistakes you can do. I started out making games in Scratch (don't judge me... a lot of devs start here), and I finished a lot of games there. Maybe they weren't all the best, but they were functional and were, at the end of the day, just fun games which should be the main priority in any game. As I started making more games in a different engine, I began striving for that perfection in my projects, and this will literally make you almost quit game development. It'll start demotivating you from finishing your projects, and then you'll be in a cycle where you make projects, never finish them, and move on to make another. It is much better to remaster your project later than to remaster your project before there's anything to remaster. It's not an easy mindset to break either, so don't get discouraged and remember to keep trying! I truly wish whoever is reading this will get something positive out of this comment, and I wish you the best of luck with your projects and career in general! ❤
The "focus on your target audience" advice really only works if you're being paid while you develop, so I'm glad you're encouraging new devs to not let that bog them down.
The problem I've found with smaller projects are that I really don't know what I want to make after the real first basics, because I just am not as interested in certain type of games, and it's been very hard to compartmentalize the bigger projects into small, cause they are usually too complicated or only part of a larger system. And it's hard to get into those because of scope also. Luckily I was able to piggyback off of a random friend idea just to finish something and then use an idea I had to implement it in the game so that it kept me going but I'm not sure what I'll do after I'm done with that.
One option is to continue refining the small game you've already built. Add more levels, more mechanics, maybe a story. You'll be able to do a lot more than you think
Such an amazing and genuine video, I found it very relatable, And I agree with everything you've said. kinda unrelated but I'm gonna make a short and simple baba is you inspired game in Godot 4.3, I'm really looking forward to starting it as I'm gonna learn a lot about composition and manipulating nodes/scenes in Godot during runtime.

Great video, I do think you could pull Godot from the title to reach a bigger audience since it's about all game development, I'm starting on Commodore 128 game dev and it applies, I'd have to rewatch to be sure but it probably applies to tabletop game dev too.
Hey DevWorm, Great video. Can you please make a video on how to add a skill tree with abilities? Also how to make spells using asset animations? Cheers

Not sure what controversy you are talking about. I haven't heard of anything. But I'm a few weeks into learning Godot and I'd say its pretty fantastic. Honestly I wouldn't even consider another game engine. For 2D games for sure Godot I think is easily the best choice. Unity or Unreal would only be a reasonable choice if you are making large complex 3D games because those engines are more performant and have more tools built in for big advanced games. Just go with Godot, you won't regret it, and whatever controversy you are mentioning is unlikely to be any sort of a concern.
