      Hi guys, I did reply to you earlier but I can't see it.... I'm so glad this video is going to add to your mum's enjoyment of her felting present this Christmas! I do appreciate your comments and really enjoy making these videos. :) This is a simple felt art piece, but if your mum experiments, there's no end to the fun she can have and pieces of art she can produce!

    New to felting, I love acrylic painting, and all yarn work, and thought why not try this? I made a few 3-D animals, but the felt painting seems like a great deal,of fun! And your work is beautiful and video instruction is great. I’ll give a small piece a try. Thank you for sharing. (Michigan USA)

    This is beautiful - one question - doesn't it smell of vinegar after the final rinse? I never have never seen the vinegar step before. Or do you rinse out the vinegar with a final rinse of water afterwards. What does the vinegar do?

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  5 років тому

      You only put a splash of vinegar in the final rinse water. This ensures that the wool has a slightly more acidic state which is better for it. The soap is alkaline and putting a splash of vinegar in the final rinse water helps in case some of the soap wasn't all removed by rinsing

  • @veraabantao2301

    What alternative soap can be use besides Olive soap? Can any bar soap will do?

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  2 роки тому

      Yes, any bar soap will do. Some people also use dish washing soap. I prefer the olive oil soap because it is slightly easier on the skin (if you're going to be felting a lot and not using gloves).

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you! The shrinkage for this piece was about 30 percent. :) I'd suggest doing a test piece using the rovings you'll use for your own work, because the different wools do vary.

    Lovely job. May I ask why vinegar?

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  6 років тому +3

      Hi Guli h, good question. Wool is an animal fibre and lasts better in a slightly acid condition. Using soap to felt the material stresses the fibres which open and hook together (which is how felt is made). But even after rinsing with water the soap leaves the wool alkaline. Adding a little vinegar to the final rinse helps restore the best pH balance for your material.

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  2 роки тому

      Cotton won't felt. But you could trap cotton strands or pieces of cheesecloth under thin whisps of wool rovings.

    I do wonder if I could do something of this sort but instead use the needle felting method for doing this type of abstract art. If anyone thinks this could be done then do let me know.

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  5 років тому

      I am sure this could be done with needle felting Leslie, although as I have only used the technique for adding fine detail to my wet felted paintings, I couldn't really advise you on exactly how to go about it in any detail. You could look at getting a large piece of pre-felt that you could use as the base, and apply layers of coloured rovings using the needle. I don't know how long it would take though. Do let me know if you experiment with this and what your results are. :)

    Kim

    • @AannshaJones
      @AannshaJones  4 роки тому

      Good question and so sorry to have only just seen it! Wool fibres have little barbs on them and when you stress them with soapy water they open up and hook into each other. So the first stage where you're very gently and lightly rubbing through the gauze protective sheet, you are helping the individual strands to hook together. That is the felting stage. After you've done a pinch test to ensure there are no loose fibres, you can take the gauze off and work the material (that it now is) more firmly. This is the fulling stage.
