I lived in Portugal from the US for 10 years. Left almost 2 years ago moving into eastern Europe. Too many expats moving into and/or retiring to the country. I wasn't living off grid but lived in small villages in central Portugal. It was just getting too crowded with English speakers that had no interest in speaking Portuguese or blending into the culture.
I Been dreaming of leaving my job that I really really hate drop everything and buy land and rebuild a house in portugal and live a simple stress free life . I don't have the courage like these people to do it I hope I will one day to follow a dream live a simple life away from this Rat race robotic life style in a uk city being treated like crap from bosses living like a caged animal in a concrete jungle .
Hey Damien, I understand completely how you feel but i can tell you ( having done it) , it was not stress free. No where ever is, even a quiet place in the middle of nowhere. If you come to Portugal this spring / summer , send me a msg and come for dinner :) My advice is to try it for a while and see how you feel.

the eucalyptus is a real problem in Portugal, and no one seems to care about our nation's forest identity, the humid Atlantic Portuguese forest is dying, being transformed into a desert all and only for the sake of money. few are the ones concern about it, some big punch has to be given upon the table and we need external help with this issue since the Portuguese don't seem to care about their identity. Every time I talk to someone about this subject, they just look at me, like I was telling some big joke. some people even think that the eucalyptus is natural to Portugal.
yes, very true, and it's interesting that those same reasons of "no care" bring, later, foreigner (mostly) people to buy lands (mostly abandoned lands) for cheap prices, cut out the eucaliptus and starting permaculture
Eucalyptus is killing Portugal basically...no one seems to care because it brings some money with no care at all. It must be forbidden to plant such a tree in Europe...only in Portugal we can see this tragic result. I can see younger generations noticing that Eucalyptus is killing the land, drying it out of any nutrients. Older landowners are greedy and are no aware of this ecological crime. As Portuguese I feel so ashamed and I can't enter these eucalyptus forests without some kind of grieve.
Gediminas J It rains a LOT in portugal...but yes the summer is very dry, but can rain for ages in winter/spring and this is a reason why is so green and a lot of forest, pitty the eucalyptus plantations, they burn so fast.

Da quello che ho visto (e sperimentato), chi si isola dura poco, chi invece crea "comunità", con i vicini, con la gente del posto in generale, funziona ed è semplicemente la vita di condivisione che si faceva una volta, niente di strano. Soprattutto se fai qualcosa di simile da solo, la condivisione è importante. 😉 Solo un consiglio.

Hello there! It was not a community, they were simply people living there, as "neighbours" (km mor, km less). It was near Pedrogao Grande. It was 6 years ago, things have changed, mostly because of a big fire in 2017...

@@ProduzioniClandestine I lived 6 years of my childhood in a sub Himalayan village plus I frequently still go to another village in wilderness, I was thinking on same lines and had a plan to buy a farm near some city but I dropped it, in my opinion and choice as we are social animals we need culture and comfort of cities, I prefer eco friendly cities but that is my own choice and opinion and I respect others choices and ideas.
You should just plan to go to a b&b there to try when things open up. Rent a van and live in that. Nice to connect with others who can help you out. Meanwhile you should bone up on useful homesteading skills. There is much to be skilled at and you will be more welcome if you are useful.
Nice, you turn a monoculture eucalyptus forest slowly back into sustainable forest again! eucalyptus is such a pest in Portugal... al the intentional forest fires to turn woods into eucalyptus monocultures. They thrive on burnt grounds... :(

it's center-portugal, the closest village is Pedrogao Grande. Some 50 Km south of Coimbra, more or less. I guess there are many lands for sale out there, as in all Portugal last time I checked

How is the law in Portugal about this kind of lifestyle and houses? Here in belgium this would be impossible because of all the restrictions about building, income,....
They have to pay a tax for the house, the rest is probably self sustained like food, power (if self generated), water, etc. so they probably don't have to pay much, they can't live in caravans and the like.
It's really difficult to live legally like this. You need license to rebuild ou build a home so they probably don't have one, and they absolutely can't have insurance. After the fires, many of the foreigners living in Portugal didn't have financial help from the government because their homes are not were not legalized or insured.

I actually don't know about the legal stuff, it could be one of the point for a new reportage out there. Just a little note: due to the recent fires of last summer, most of what has been recorded in this video has been burned. I don't know how they are living now
a Sony a6000 with a 12mm f2 Samyang lens whenever you see wideangle, and 35mm or 50mm f1.8. It's a great camera, in my opinion, for this kind of videos where you need to carry light weight (on your back and on your arms while filming for hours) and have the potential of good quality (that's on you, on manual mode, which is the only mode I suggest anyway), but you have to think about the sound as well. I used this same gear for all the videos in this channel, for one and a half year, and I'm still pretty happy with it. It records in 8bit anyway, so you have to TAKE good images, and not do everything in post
I didn't like the video. These people give the impression of living the perfect life but basically, it is not more than a pure form of selfishness. They can only live their life because other people work and create. The off-grid life does not show really important discoveries. Real creativity is missing. It is more of the same. When you compare it to art, you could say that real art is though, unexpected, strange, and not loved by many because it is too new for them. All these things are missing in this off-grid life. It is escapism. They hardly seem to speak Portuguese because they prefer to worship the religion of off-grid people, which are unfortunately almost the only people they meet. It is a dead-end life...

The recent forest fires in Portugal were of an unprecedented magnitude because of the inflammability of the oils in Eucalyptus trees.

Taxes are a nothing man. In Belgium you pay for anything, a rip off country with the highest debt in Europe. Portugal is 100x better.
