The pieces they produce are really beautiful. Lots of respect to the amount of effort put into every details on every piece. Hope their generations to come will continue to embrace the art of pottery. Thanks for National Geographic.
This short film gives me an impression of the textual background. An earthenware is overflowing with the sculptor's deep feeling for nature and great esteem for their ancestors…I think🤔 beautiful film🍍✨
Moises Munoz Yes, they and thousands of others that are uneducated. Fortunes, Dynasties, etc were made off the blood sweat and tears of the down trodden.
Indeed, i live by the border to Mexico and can easily come and go. There is a huge store in Mexico justa few steps from the border crossing that maily sells to rich people and Anglos. All their merch is 100% Mexican hand made. They sell beautiful pottery like this in the clip and extremely expensive and price tags are in dollars. While this family may be selling their items for some pesos, those taking advantage of them sell their products for many times their price
Isn't this the essence of capitalism? Buy cheaply from the producers and sell with a bigger profit margin than the producer was paid. Mexico has been amongst the most active countries in registering its cultural traditions with UNESCO as Patrimony of Humanity. It goes some way towards protecting these traditions, giving producers access to markets, helping to ensure these traditions are taught, etc. Not perfect and it won't stop the cheap Chinese copies that threaten traditional pottery everywhere, but it is a step. And these UA-cam videos are a big help in making us all more aware. Thank you.
No, they mean pinecones. Pineapples are not the inspiration for these pieces. The pinecones inspire these artisans as they live near a forrest filled with pine trees. Over the years there's been a mixture and a play on words because as you point out in spanish both pineapple and pinecones are the same. But they don't draw inspiration from pineapples. Maybe the colors can throw you off or the shape. But if you look closely the main shapes are of pinecones not of pineapples.
My gf is from this small town. We have bought from them and brought back to the states. Museo Tsitsiki in San Jose de Gracia. It's 10 min away from Tangancicuaro, Michoacan.
This was a beautifully made video that truly captured the story being told! Bravo to the filmmaker and to the family for sharing their story with the world. Their craftsmanship is amazing.
Some very detailed and beautiful objects, from simple clay. I have seen some ancient Native American pieces bring 6 figures at auction. 1000 years make a heck of a difference. Thanks NG.
You can also stop at San Nicolas de Obispo and get a hand made stone molcajete, then buy a high quality guitar in Paracho, and real hand blown glass Christmas ornaments in Tlapujahua. All in Michoacán. Oh and yes, some of the best ice cream in Tocumbo Michoacán and best carnitas in Quiroga.
I am lucky to own 5 pieces, 3 of them being in the garden in front of my house in the Basque country , where they have been weathered by the elements which has made them even more beautiful . Some have cactus inside, because of their origin , some flowers , and some fruits (no disrespect) because i don't like to treat art as something to be merely contemplated but also as something to be used so it acquires even more beauty and sentimental value over the years . But i don't consider these any less than exquisite works of art .
Beautiful vessels.... all of them! Too bad they do not enjoy the financial rewards of the items... I feel as though others take financial advantage of this family's skills...
I like how it went from pottery with nothin much in mind but function to elaborate pineapples and such. They are really beautiful. Anyway I’ve got a reading suggestion that you may or may not be interested in reading. Acts from the Bible. Just a suggestion that you decide on since you are your own person
This Mexican family uses clay and water to maintain their culture. What part of their story resonates with you the most?
That their struggle resembles like mine
I like how he stresses the care for mother nature and about the materials, especially the clay that it is flexible and can become anything they want.
National Geographic - they need to stay in Mexico to really keep their culture.
@@krossnkuss2875 where you think they are? In your backyard?
i think the best is: they do it as a family. everyone do his part to create a very creative pottery. and they use simple things.
The pieces they produce are really beautiful. Lots of respect to the amount of effort put into every details on every piece. Hope their generations to come will continue to embrace the art of pottery. Thanks for National Geographic.
This is the real Mexican Culture. I´m proud to be mexican.

The translation of "piña" was misunderstood. They meant pineapple not pinecone
Dionicio Baca thank god you clarified that cause i’m sitting here thinking “that’s a pineapple”
@@Littleathquakes the thing is pinecone and pineapple in Spanish are both "piña" but in the video it clearly isn't a pinecone but a pineapple
