      I will have to wait and see how the BEARS deal with it. Electric fence will be a good thing to install around the Yurt and see how that works.

    Religiously watch your vlogs every night. I may have a problem... lol havent had a single negative until now. That was the most dangerous chain saw and tree felling I've seen. I know you got alot better later in your journey. But even the most seasoned faller can die from a simple mistake. Also when teaching nicole how to use the chainsaw. Please get her to wear chaps. And keep your head on the opposite side of the bar so if it kicks back and the chain break fails it's not going to slice threw your head/neck.
    Love you Jake and nicole your both so so inspirational.

    If you want to clear a wide path you should rent a dozer or large equipment to pull out the trees and then you can level the dirt plus you can use the topsoil to place in your garden

    Stihl has the most fool proof saw sharpening tool, it does the cutters and the rakers simultaneously. By hand. I have a Stihl Rancher and re-sharpen at every new tank of gas when cutting hardwood. Every 3rd or 4th tank on softwood. Stihl two in one sharpener. Check it out.

  • @chucklogan7296
    @chucklogan7296 5 років тому +2

    You two should invest in a gas powered brush cutter? It would be way faster taking down all that brush in your future drive way and clearing out a nice garden area

    • @batwood8010
      @batwood8010 5 років тому

      Yes, I was thinking that too. Where I live, we call it a "bush hog" and it makes quick work of a driveway like that. Worth hiring for a day. Maybe a neighbor has something like that.

  • @MacBailey
    @MacBailey 5 років тому +6

    Jake, your chain saw is not sharp even after using the electric sharpener. If you ever have the chain touch the dirt it gets dull in half a second. Look up a Stihl 2 in 1 chain sharpener (also identical made by PFERD in blue handles). Major firewood youtubers like Wranglestar and Mike Morgan swear by these. In addition to the cutting edge you were sharpening they file the flat "rake" which can make a huge difference. They have both done vids on theses. You just have to buy the one make for your chain spacing. Your current chain is kind of chewing through the wood instead of true cutting. A sharp chain would cut through the wood you were cutting literally 5 or 10 times faster. Not a bad idea to use the protective chaps and hearing protection too. Keep up the great videos.

    Jake, even though I watched you sharpen your saw, I think you should ask one of your neighbors what you are doing wrong. A sharp saw should have cut through that little tree in a couple of minutes and each cut should have been in a straight line with a lot bigger chips coming off while sawing. FYI, I like your videos, keep up the good work. :-)

    • @joealtmaier9271
      @joealtmaier9271 5 років тому +2

      And it takes only a minute with a round file, without having to remove the chain. Using the cutting wheel is maybe too fast to have control. I thought we could see the tip of the cutting edge just disappear in an instant.

      He has no business falling tree's he's not even close to being skilled enough. Even if you can run a saw doesn't mean you can fall tree's and he can't run or sharpen a saw not trying to be a jerk you can be seriously hurt or even killed if you don't know what you're doing.

    I spent many years logging with my friend's hardwood business back in the day and I cringed at some of your chainsaw habits/technique. Please, for the sake of Nicole and the beautiful life you are building, adopt safer form and wear the right gear. I'm not some keyboard warrior looking to put you on blast just to be negative. I'm genuinely concerned for your safety. None of us want to see the "Our trip to the emergency room" video. Peace to you both.

      You sounds like your username. Never a bad thing to tell people to be careful with something like that. Just around the corner from me a guy died after his chainsaw kicked back. He was found hanging in the tree he was paid to trim back. Left behind a wife and new born 😔 happens way too often.

    Nicole & Jake. Thank you for another excellent episode. We really love the variety you are able to show in your videos now that you have a dry place to sleep. There are so many projects that it must seem overwhelming at times but it's a real credit to you both that you are so dedicated to making it work, despite literally starting from scratch. Having grown up on the BC coast we are used to the sounds of the crashing surf, the torrential rains, and screaming winds. In time Nicole you will hopefully learn to love the music of Mother Nature and discover that these sounds are soothing enough to put you to sleep instead of keeping you awake all night. A big CONGRATULATIONS to you both on your 2 year anniversary tomorrow! We really love seeing the little scenes where you show your love and affection for each other; something we truly understand having been married after only 18 months together. You have come a long way and made a huge commitment to each to move to Blackfish Hollow and build an off grid, self sustaining home. Maybe our paths will cross on this long weekend but if not we will eagerly await your next video showing where you decided to go hiking. All the best to you both. Lance & Carol - Victoria

    Watching the raindrops fall off of the narrow plywood strip at the bottom edge of your Yurt makes me wonder if it's treated with something so it won't rot? It would have great is the side skirt covered that area. Maybe a strip of aluminum flashing would be a good way to cover and protect the exposed plywood?

    Utah Sweet (Dixie) pomegranate has a soft seed. It does not stain. I have 20 of them. The arils (seeds) are noticeably softer than those of Wonderful and non-staining juice. The only thing easier to root than pomegranate is fig. Just take one to nine inch cuttings and place in the ground. Keep moist and in mostly shade until it has roots. You can cover with a bread wrapper. I have a mister. You should be getting fruit in about three years from planting.

    After seeing the chips that stihl produce. I think the the chain is not sharp as should be. After a year sharpening my chains of my MS271 with this special grander. I went spending money to stihl 2 in one file guide which depends on the chain you have /example item number 5605-750-4304/. And sharpening by hand is the preferred method for me. Stay away from dirt and nails :D And regarding safety there are lots and lots useful videos on youtube for that. Hope this helps looking forward more videos of your journey.

    Need a bigger chain saw, extra chains, files, oil. Sorry but that saw won't do the job. Rain never stopped a logger.

    Jake you are not sharpening the chain correctly. That saw is not cutting, when sharp it will go thru a tree that size like butter. Watch some videos on how to use that sharpener. Not trying to be a smart a**, just wanting to make your job much safer.

    Cannabis became legal and seed price quadrupled. I wanted to grow it because it is the only anti-seizure herb I know.

    Just FYI of the Chainsaw to your right side in case of kickbacks. No saw in action hold it up close to the teeth so I can bite into it

    Have you guys found any nettles on the property? We made some nettle pesto pasta on Orcas Island last weekend seasoned with smoked sea salt and it was incredible... deep dark green and super tasty. Normally it’s very expensive to buy in stores but luckily it grows wild in the PNW.

    You need to sharpen that saw blade or get a new blade. You should not have to move the saw back and forth that much ,it should have gone right through that small piece of wood.

    Time to buy a new chain then find someone to teach you how to sharpen a chainsaw properly. I'm rooting for you. Not trying to be harsh but you have much to learn. Love ya LOL!

      Yes, took me a long time and many tries to learn sharpening of a chain saw. It is a precise technique. But holy crap! get a proper size round file and learn to use that!
