    How to clean the plastic waste before going for electrospinning? Does it require any special cleaning technique or detergent and water is enough?

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  2 місяці тому

      Preferably the plastics are cleaned or virgin. If they are not, cleaning might be necessary, e.g. water and detergent.

      @@UGentTextiles Hi, Have you tried supercritical fluids in autoclave for a good cleaning of plastic waste. Or water and detergents cleaning will be enough?

      @@ShahzaibKhan-r3w We haven't done that as we work with clean materials from the start. We would suggest looking for relevant literature on the topic.

    What is that equipment used in filtration at 1:35 called?

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  5 років тому

      It’s a ‘separating funnel’, a relatively normal piece of chemistry glassware, with a DIY nanofiber membrane holder at the end. This is mainly used for demonstration purposes.

    What residues are present post filtration? Are the fibers carcinogenic? Are the fibers digestible? Are the fibers metabolized by humans/animals/plants?

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  3 роки тому

      The residues will depend on what you are filtering and which type of membrane used. You can find many articles on this topic. As for the other questions, we produce nanofibres from non-toxic polymers using non-toxic solvents. So no carcinogenic risks in these cases. Depending on the type of polymer used, they can also biodegrade. There is a huge range in materials that can be turned into nanofiber membranes, and as such, the right one should be selected depending on the application.

    Hi! May I ask where can I purchase a polymer pellet the one that you used in this video? I'm from the Philippines, a young researcher. Thank you!

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  3 роки тому +1

      There are multiple providers of chemicals/polymers for labs. We often buy small amounts of polymer pellets at Sigma Aldrich for example. You could also look for polymer manufacturers in your area and ask if they can provide a small sample bag, this is usually no problem.

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  5 років тому +3

      This is really a very vague question. The conditions depend on which material is used, which solvent, ... You can always look up the papers of our department. Or papers about electrospinning in general.

    Can this technique (electrospinning) used to make semipermeable membrane which can be used to filter impure blood?

    • @UGentTextiles
      @UGentTextiles  5 років тому +1

      One of our research topics is indeed filtration through nanofibrous membranes. So far, we haven’t done any blood filtering, but recently published a paper about separation of heterogeneous azeotropes (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/adfm.201804138 ). In general nanofibrous membranes can be used for micro- and ultrafiltration, but extensions can be made via functionalizations.

      You will have to dissolve your polymer in a solvent and then optimize the solution parameters for electrospinning. Literature can help you in finding the right solution parameters. Make sure you take correct safety precautions when working with chemicals.
