I have to agree, if you own just two guitars an SG and a Strat will cover most everything. You can also say pretty much the same ( almost however no trem typically on a Tele. ) with a Les Paul and a Telecaster. Sure, some models of humbucker style guitars offer a coil split but to me it’s just never as good sounding as a true single coil guitar, just preference obviously - there’s never a ‘right or wrong’ 🤙
One of my SG’s is also a 19’ Standard in the Heritage Cherry as well. One of my best playing guitars as well 🤙 I do like Strats, Tele’s and Les Pauls too although for me the SG is the most comfortable guitar to play especially if I’m sitting down.
A strat trem can go up when pull on the trem. The issue with yours is you have it decked sitting flush against the body. You can loosen up the springs in the back to make it float. It wont be as stable as a floyd rose but will be able to do most of the same things. Most people deck their trems to avoid accidentally pulling them sharp.
Great comparison, i just started a year ago with a fender acoustic and was torn between a strat and an SG, went with the strat i love it, currently shopping for an SG to add to the mix, its a fun journey
What a great video! I have a 120th anniversary Gibson SG and 60s Epi LP. The only name I’ll pay for Gibson on the headstock for is the SG. I just recently got a Squier bullet to see about the differences and it’s actually a cool little guitar. I love all things Gibson but the strat sounds really good. I am planning on another SG standard, and the one I’m looking for goes brand new about just under 2k. Gonna sub too. This was just an interesting one all around and you play really well too!
One tone that I like more than any other is a Gibson in the middle position with the volume at 10 and the tone nobs both turned down directly to 0. Tone bliss, unbeatable.
This is a great overview. In the tones section, it kind of sounded like you had the amp dialed in for the stratocaster and that made the SG not sound its best.
I’ve spent years searching for the perfect guitar, only to realize that any $300 guitar with good EQ and a decent amp or simulation can get the job done. Ultimately, the best guitar is the one you’ll play the most-comfort is key. That said, I must confess that the journey to reach this conclusion was incredibly enjoyable, and I learned a lot along the way.
Trying to decide between these exact guitars. Same colors and models. Starting to lean towards the SG since I have an American Telecaster already and I want the low end of the humbuckers. The Strat looks so good though. Thanks for the demo.
the perfect 2 guitars that you can totally go your whole life with and play virtually any style of music. Some may perfer a Tele but if you have an SG... I think the Strat is the better choice.
Funny how this video gets recommended to me, I started teaching myself how to play guitar ~2 years ago. I got a Squire Bullet Strat with a Vox amp for 90€ off ebay and it's been amazing to play on. Last month for my birthday my friends got me an Epiphone SG Special P90 because I've been playing so much Black Sabbath. I obviously don't have any real frame of reference yet but from my limited experience, the Strat and SG are the coolest guitars (Even the cheap Squire and Epiphone versions)!
You need to float the bridge. They usually come decked and can only lower the pitch. You need to adjust it which will allow you to raise and lower the pitch.
Had a SG for a while loved it but had to take it back cause I needed the money. Still wanna get another one, the playability was the best of any guitar I’ve played and sounded great and light as hell
Neck dive isn’t a function of body vs neck weight it is more of a design and parts placement issue. The neck is not heavier than the body and all the electronics.
Look close and you can see that the SG bridge is almost in the middle of the body, that causes imbalance and a reach too far to your left..........and the Strat has the ********** volume knob in the way ?
The strat's volume knob location is 100% not in the best spot. It's incredibly easy to accidentally turn down the output of the guitar with your pinky when playing.
Im a newer player, damn near a complete noob. My current guitar is an entry level Ibanez. Its only a 300 guitar but at my particular skill level, it does the job. Id be lying though, if I said i dont like sitting around and dreaming about breaking out that shiny new drean guitar. Tbh though, Im honesty leaning more towards Fender because Gibson is way to expensive to be so fragile. Ive never actually played one, but i keep hearing so much about headstocks being broken. Id be absolutely SICK if i went out and spent a couple grand on something and be terrified of it being broken. Im trying to concentrate on learning to play what i have for now and earning a chance to upgrade. I opened up a second checking account and im currently puttinf back 25.00 a week for my guitar fund. After 52 weeks, thats 1300.00 and im strongly considering getting a brand new Fender Jagstang from Sweetwater
the only thing i don't like about my 2001 SG standard is that it doesn't stay tuned for more than 3 songs. I just bought a thing that should help that.
Dude open the nut slots a tiny bit. Just run through them with sandpaper a few passes then lube them. I have literally no tuning issues with any of my Gibsons after doing this on the ones that were tight. Some of them have never had tuning issues out of the box but the ones that do get bound up in there just need to be slightly opened and lubed.
Recently bought an american pro ii tele and it's the greatest guitar I've ever played. Alot of people seem to not like the vmod pickups but man they are incredible! Now i need a Gibson sg and i will never need another guitar... At least that's what i tell my family 😅
2:00 Sorry but I am calling BS on this. There has never been a test that shows a bolt-on neck sustaining less than a set neck or neck through. Actually tests have actually shown the opposite. However the difference in sustain is so small that you can pretty much call it a toss up.

SG for so many reasons, but the scale length feels so much nicer to play in drop tunings, it looks better, and people complaining about neckdive need to try a Gibson, it's the cheaper Epiphones where they refuse to weight match the necks to the bodies at the factory giving SG's a bad rep, if you go SG - you must go Gibson.
Fender guitars at 25 1/2 scale length are the dirt bikes of electric guitars. Gibsons at 24 3/4 the shorter scale length are the road bikes. A fender will survive a hell of a fall. Gibsons are notorious for headstock breaks. Gibson are "easier" to play when hand muscle strength is a weakness.
If the tremolo on a strat is set up floating like it should be, it is absolutely possible to use the whammy-bar both ways. Won't need a Floyd for that. 😅
