First of all, I laughed out loud when you said "Donruss photographers had two moves, we're still waiting to see the second one." 🤣🤣 I have to agree with you on the Bob Oliver card, that is an all-time classic. It's got everything you could possibly ask for. Ridiculously emphatic stretch...check. Wearing the shiny warm up jacket in the muggy Florida spring...check. Looking up instead of where the ball (hypothetically) would be coming from...check. Wearing a batting helmet instead of a cap...check. It's perfect! It's like they saw him coming back from the bathroom and said, "Hey, Bob. Can you pose for your picture card? Never mind the bathroom facilities in the background or the palm trees...or the lack of infield dirt, kids won't care as long as you strike a sweet pose!"
This was another fun one! Smoky the Bear nice call! Love the Larry Walker and Don Mattingly landscape Cards! I like the commentary of guys that were scared to get a ground ball on the 1989 deck lol! I also thought it was hilarious when you said we’re still waiting for the second move from the Donruss photographers😊
I imagine a lot of these photos went down like this, 'Give me a 1st baseman's pose'. 'You want me over near the bag?' 'No, just stand next to that rack of bats, nobody is going to notice'.
These are all great looking cards except maybe the Luzinski! Love the Smokey The Bear card! I just recently bought that Padres set! So cool you met Boog Powell when you were a kid!
Boog is from my hometown! When he was 12 he led the local Little League team to the World Series but they lost. He was bigger than the coach! Cool video T Sean
My favorite 1B card is Carlton Fisk's 1992 Upper Deck Card, cause it's funny they used a picture of Fisk playing 1B rather than catcher. Happy that my boy Prince Fielder got a mention in this video too.
The new 'set' position for infielders is a little hop... they have shown that it's more effective with your first step then the usual walk in 2 steps and crouch down position that most of us were probably taught 30 years ago. You want to be in the air while the ball crosses the plate so if there is contact you are landing in peak 'ready' fielding position. Of course, all of this is a long way of saying Doug Jennings was a defensive mastermind.
I notice Alex Bregman Astros 3rd baseman does that jump. That Doug Jennings card reminded me of that scene from Moneyball and Billy Bean is telling Scott Hatteberg that it's easy to play first base and then Ron Washington said "no, it's incredibly difficult." Thanks for watching.
'Hey, we're taking your photo for Topps. Can you put your jersey on real quick? ' Should I take my shiny jacket off first? 'No, just put it on over your jacket , nobody is going to notice'. New Baseball Card Theater series 'Nobody is Going To Notice' or 'Conversations with the Photog'. These poor guys still getting asked to sign these cards 50 years later 😂And yes... if everyone was better at their job these wouldn't be as awesome. Donruss hired an actual photographer to take the most boring-ass photos of all time.
I did do some episodes about Thoughts of a Photographer with Fred Willard. I'm going to put a Best of together soon. Nobody's gonna notice is a good idea. I'm always open to ideas.
So, in 3 years, Fleer went from not caring to being politically correct. They made several variations of the #381 Randy Johnson rookie card with the Marlboro ad blacked out but kept Glenn's card with no issues.
Great video

I'm glad we could share a laugh over how corny Donruss cards are. Bob Oliver is everything cool about baseball cards.
Wouldn't be surprised if Oliver pulled a groin muscle with that pose.
He was getting into the photo.

Donruss has always been uninspired. They look like they're designed by a panel of middle school art teachers. Thanks as always for watching.
Awesome! Thanks T. Sean!
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you dug it.

You should do a video devoted to Boog Powell...oh wait, you already did! TALKIN BOUT BOOG!
Thanks. Never forget Boog once wrestled a bear at the state fair.
Fun fact - when Powell’s Little League team played in the World Series his position was shortstop. That is kinda hard to picture.
Smokey Bear was a great first baseman. Totally deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Somebody should write a song about Boog Powell... ;)
Smokey and Steve Garvey deserve the Hall.
Someone should do a marker doodle of Smokey the Bear.
Excellent!
Thanks, Jon.

Love the Smokey the Bear set. So many cool cards.
Bob Oliver may have ended up on the DL after that stretch. Trying explaining that one to the front office. Loved the video. Well done.

Lakeland, Florida?!!
@ yup, back in 1954
If you're ever at Camden Yards, I recommend paying about $100 for a Baltimore pit beef Boog's Barbecue sandwich
I ate there about 10 years back and it was a day Boog wasn't there.

I didn't know about that Fisk card. What a cool shot. Just put it on my list.

Nice. I wonder what Smokey the Bear’s fielding percentage was.
Smokey was all bat, no glove. A regular Dick Stuart.

Female bullfrog in heat 😂
That was a weird pose, right? Thanks for watching.
There was even another guy who went by Boog Powell? He was a CFer though. 😅
Yeah, the new guy named Boog got busted for PEDs. Don't know if he returned after his suspension.

How have I never heard about that Randy Johnson card? I had no idea that happened. Thanks for telling me.
