Max is DeafBlind and intellectually disabled. At the age of 16, he has never had access to a program for the DeafBlind. Instead, educators have told his family that he is incapable of learning. Max and his family want others to know that he is worthy of accommodations and unconditional love.
If you are a DeafBlind specialist and would like to get in touch, send us an email at wegotyoumax@gmail.com
Follow Max at / max.way1
Help Max get the education he deserves at bit.ly/HelpingMax . If you are able, please consider contributing $20. Many people giving this amount will create a gigantic positive change in Max’s life. I have contributed the first $10,000 in order to communicate to Max that we fully believe in him. The last few minutes of this video describe the fundraiser. Thank you so much!

My wife had to watch this in segments. Our son was deaf, blind and mute. Max reminds us so much of our son. The diagnosis was Rubella and we spent our lives supporting, and loving him. Later on he lost his balance and so had to be in a wheelchair. The words they say are exactly what we believe. Doctors said he would only live to be in his mid twenty's but he nearly doubled his life expectancy. One day we where walking downtown and a woman came walking towards us and had that look that we have seen before. As she walked past, she turned her head to stare at him. Lo and behold, she walked square into a cement light pole. Love the humor you show because it does nothing but help heal the soul. He passed away on February of 2017 at 43. God bless all of you and know you are not alone.
I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
Thank you for sharing this. Your son continues to live on in the peoples lives he touched.

He's super smart as well. Teaching Max the parts of his face and different textures is really clever and seems right on par with what he needs. And holy cow they do look alike lol.
His personality is so cool
Well done Grandpa, what a great role model, you a good man

This family IS SERIOUSLY Amazing. You can tell they don't feel he's a burden, they treat him with respect and dignity and they LOVE HIM. They want the absolute best for him. My goodness, I'm so happy he is in their care!! Max and this family deserves the world !!
Ahman Sister!!!!!😊
Notice how most people like Chris right away? He has a caring vibe, and people can feel it. 🧡
Oh Max's mom mentioned it too!
Chris is the man.
He is an empath. He has such a big heart everyone can sense that in him.
He's an awesome guy. One of the things I really love about the videos is the way Chris shows how easy it is to make meaningful connections with people who communicate in ways other than speaking.

When Max's family was talking about how his school didn't see what he was capable of intellectually and talked about how they fought for him, it made me incredibly emotional. I cannot believe that people genuinely say he is incapable of learning. It is very obvious he has already learned how to communicate, walk, understand the people and body language around him.
At first I was skeptical of how beneficial this interview could be especially for him but I learned a lot and I realized I need to check myself sometimes. The more people watch this the more they’ll learn to treat people with more respect
Some of us go into watching an interview expecting him to be able to talk directly with Max, but the reality is we all have different ways of communicating. Especially with a disability or several. This video did a good job showing how Max communicates and respecting him for who is as an individual, not just the disabilities he has. We should all use this as an opportunity to be patient with those in our lives who communicate differently and take the time to appreciate each other.
❤️
Everyone is capable of learning. It’s a shame his school isn’t pushing him to his fullest potential. The school needs to try harder to figure out how he learns best and listen to his family!!!
@Kane Did you watch the video?
@@PageShearling Nope don't think they did! 😅 (Psssst Kane: skip to 10:18 and rewatch a good minute fron there 😉)
I believe he has the capability to learn, however a public school will not have the resources to try and teach him. It's a shame but the level of attention needed isn't attainable in public education.
I used to be an aide in the special unit to a middle school and high school. Trust me the staff is over worked and under staffed. We wish it was easier but he would need a specialized facility as public school can’t fully reach the needs for him.
@@ChaoticLapras Public education is mandated to gather information about appropriate resources, create programs that approximate them through employee education, individualized programs, and therapies. If they are unwilling to educate a child with Max's needs appropriately, the district is obligated to pay for his residential placement near an appropriate program that will meet his needs. He must learn to functionally communicate with others immediately. It sounds like all his previous educational environments are trying to "wait him out" until he deteriorates past the point of benefitting from his education. He can legally receive district services until his 25th birthday as long as he is acquiring skills that benefit him in his adult transition. Ohio can step up now or wait for us to come for them later. Max is a stunning human being. The UK and Asia are much more committed to children with his needs than we are. Shame on us. Bless Chris.

Wow I never knew there was a scale of 0-120 for blindness/deafness. That kinda changes my whole outlook. Hey Max, I’d totally squeeze your hand hello 👋, and I also want you to know you’re very lucky to have a family like yours. To the man in the Cleveland cap: I wish I had a father like you.
My mother had a Aunt that was both deaf and blind from birth. Lived to a ripe old age. But when i was younger i always wondered how she coped. Let alone learnt anything without the ground knowledge of sight and sound in early years. How to link things to words. With just touch. But its only through things like this and well life experience that ive learnt that blind is not complete blackness. But many levels. Yea as a young adult. I would hear someone was blind and just assumed everything was like a black room to them.
❤️❤️
Just so folks know, ALWAYS direct your words towards the disabled person, even if they can’t talk. Don’t talk about them to whoever they are with, it happens constantly, regardless of if the person is nonverbal or not, has an intellectual disability or not. It’s just respectful to treat them like a normal person, even if the response has to go through a carer or family member or friend.
@@tubester4567 No, of course not. At that point, if they are non-verbal, there is probably someone with them. So, that person will answer you, you acknowledge the answer by responding to both people.
Thanks for the advice. I always feel nervous cause I do t want to offend and I want to teach my children how to be respectful as well.
@@nitaboo74 of course! Thanks for wanting to learn. I’m sure your kids will be great friends for the disabled kids they may go to school with 💕
do what chris does and watch for subtle signs (e.g. breathing changes, gestures, body language, eye movements) and respond to those as if the person is responding to you with that, which they may be. i mean, sometimes only people who really get to know someone can read or understand these changes or movements or signals, but sometimes it is sort of obvious if you look out for it. people, even without disabilities, communicate nonverbally all the time. make room for responses that may not be normative to you, be ready to catch them, and you will maybe be able to form more of a connection with someone special or with someone you never thought you could.
@@tubester4567 your not expected to hold a full conversation with everyone at all times, regardless of disbilities. if they cant really continue a full conversation in a way that you understand, still make an effort for small talk. for example, "im going to get food, do you want something?" "good morning/hello/goodbye" "how are you?". sometimes they will have loved ones help communicate, but they may not. either way, dont talk past them 🤷♂️

They are very blessed to have each other and we are very blessed to experience their presence here on UA-cam! Thank you
Great enlightening comment!
I never thought about that, but you have such a good point. Any teacher considered “normal” in society today can’t teach you to love in the same way a “disabled” person can. Well said!
Very true! But also there's nothing about disability (conditions severely impacting one or more major life activities like seeing or walking or going to work) that indicates someone would be a less good teacher or person to connect with! They aren't really intersecting categories even though society teaches us that being disabled means a loss of all types of value. It's truly just a loss of certain ability. You are seeing the inherent equality and that's wonderful!
Why are you putting quotes around disabled?
@@artianwen6412 I'm referring to what is considered disabled, and the different perspectives on it. The comment above you had a very good point to it.

that's so cool!! ive always wondered what its like to have touch be your most "dominant" sense because most people rely on hearing and sight, it makes so much sense how deafblind ppl can make clay sculptures just as naturally as we able bodied ppl draw or replicate noises bc thats the sense they focus on most of the time

YES!!
Yes! The fact he is 16 and he looks well dressed and well taken care of!
Even the grandfather stepped up to be a father figure which is an amazing see! That boy will be good!
I don't understand why the schools would say Max is incapable of learning, to what, cover for the fact that they are incapable of teaching him? What an ego trip! Take responsibility. Deaf-blind and ID are eligibility categories under IDEA. They have a legal obligation to provide a free appropriate public education for him, and they are not. The school district should be paying for him to go to an out of state school that will meet his needs. I grew up in Illinois, and they did for me. The school district paid for me to go to an out of state residential school because the schools where I lived couldn't provide for my needs. This is the expectation. That family aught to hire a lawyer and sue the school district. It's totally reprehensible.
🥰

I just need to show love and understanding and acceptance. You are such am amazing family, you all have a gift in raising Max and Max is a gift to you and us. Thank you so much. Eager for Max to get specialist help he deserves and see that beautiful smile some more in another video.
By far the coolest, most intelligent and loving family I've seen in a while. This was absolutely heart-warming. :)
❤❤❤
His mom legit melts my heart, she is so joyful and bubbly I bet Max loves her so much
She is not bubbly but fat. She aint gonna get better coz she is already depressed way beyond return.
I just don't have words for how delightful and precious this family is!
The way these family members talk about Max makes me more fully understand how God thinks about us. How special to have seen this video
Beautiful comment.

Umm
i love that theyre bragging about the fact they have the best child ever and theyre the ones who get to live woth him
I cried throughout this entire video. idk why I'm such an emotional mess. I just can't believe Max has never received deafblind assistance or therapy before. That is so upsetting. And I'm so thankful for people like you that bring awareness to kids like Max so we can get involved & help. This sweet family deserves that. Max deserves that.
I’m in tears now watching this. It is absolutely unacceptable that Max hasn’t received the assistance he desperately needs! I’m glad that he does have such a supportive, caring family!
Does he needs support? He needs love as support and if we do not show love to him , it doesn't matter cos his bank account is overflowing with love and happy vibes from his family. Max is great
Right? They’re dismissively told that he can’t learn?

Haven't yet finished watching this (very stormy here in the UK tonight) but I will donate so that Max can get the specialist education he deserves. Every child should have access to education, and it is even more important for a child with the added challenges of blindness and hearing loss. What a lovely family he has - but they need to feel secure that he will be cared for in the future if anything happens to them. Max deserves to have more opportunity to participate in life, and to be able to communicate and express himself. Lots of love to Max and his family, and thanks to Chris for introducing them to us and starting this campaign to help.
PS have finished watching now - what a loving family, and how gracious they all are. Max, your family love you so much and we love you too. 💕
It's terrible here! Internet connection is glitching constantly, stay safe wherever you are ❤
Where are you friend ?

Seeing parents give so much to their child makes me so happy. Everyone deserves a family that cares like this
Max’s mother reminds me so much of mine, so much love and so much trust in her child’s abilities, it made me tear up a little.
I feel like this family could educate educators to better facilitate learning environments for special needs students. Max is awesome and so is his family. God bless you richly

“the more opportunity you present to the kid, the greater possibility of things the kid will gravitate towards, allowing the kid to become what they are meant to be” -Max’s Amazing Grandfather
Oh my goodness, the sheer level of devotion and love in this family is breath-taking. Max, you are SO blessed with this love. His happy, contented laughter as his mother and grandparents spoke about him with so much love and pride radiated to the core of my being. What an incredible family.
Indeed, we never should assume that someone like Max cannot tell you are saying hi or trying to communicate with them.
I can feel the love through the screen. What an absolutely beautiful family. Thank you to them for shining their light on us.
What special people these people are.He hit the family lottery
"We all have the ability to learn if we have the opportunity to be taught." Max's grandparents and mother are amazing. This is how you advocate for your family members and for all people with disabilities.
My granddaughter was born 80% deaf and has a cyst in her brain. She is 4 months old. I feel like the doctor's & specialists don't care. They just give my daughter the run around. My husband & I have stepped in but not much of a change. We're determined to help our daughter with our granddaughter no matter what it takes or whatever we have to do to get help for Amiliani!🙏💯 GOD Bless all of our children especially those with special needs. 💖
Sending love and kind energy to you all. ❤️
Please make sure that your daughter doesn't just settle for what any one doctor, or specialist tells her about your granddaughter. Tell her to get 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and more opinions. Don't allow them to let her fall through the cracks. God bless. Praying for your granddaughter, you, and the rest of your family.
🙏✝💖
Sending love!!
Sending love and good energy 💕 god bless you!!!!
You keep fighting! You ARE stronger than you know!! Be her voice!! Prayers for you and your family!
He must be able to understand. He laughs at the correct moments. This is an amazing interview. Max is definitely one of the luckiest guys out there to be so loved.
