My grandfather and I worked in the cemetery when the movie was shot. At 5:33 you see a trash can on the right. It was not there then. They had us put a pile of dirt on the ground. I always joked that Geoffrey used my shovel to dig the grave. They shot it just down the hill looking up to make it look like he was filling in the grave. The director asked Geoffrey to look afraid and go down to his knees. I asked the director if he wanted us to dig a grave for them. He joked and said no we will back to Hollywood and dig one. That’s what they did cause there was no grave here. That was a great summer. Got to hang out with the cast at the cemetery. I have Geoffrey, Elisha, Lance and David Souls autographs. Saw James Mason a few times. I was to young to know who he was.
The grave was a set with three sides it was made from timber and set dressed.
Awesome 👍
One of the greatest shock moments of any horror movie was in the original Salem's lot when Barlow made his first appearance.
Yes! Classic moment.
Yep,still to this day the biggest shock I've ever had watching a movie,my parents and brothers still remind me to this day how some 40years ago at around 8years old how I jumped up and ran away from the TV when 'Barlow' first introduced himself in the jail scene in 'salems lot'.
My face resembled Ned's face when Barlow popped up.
I remember watching this as a kid and the moment Barlow appears in the cell WOW!! Definitely up there with my other horror favorites 🖤
Couldn't agree more. Everytime i watch it, i know it's coming, but it still scares the bejesus out of me.
This was awesome. I lived in the Bay Area most of my 20's and would have taken the time to visit Ferndale if I had known about it. I was about 8 years old when the miniseries aired, and was absolutely terrified by it for a long time after. As a kid we had rose bushes around our house that would occasionally scratch on the windows when windy; I always imagined a Glick boy was at the window! Have rewatched a few times over the years. Hoping the remake will be a success and does not hold back on the scare/dread factor.
I had the same issue as a kid. I couldn't look at my windows when I went to my bedroom at night. I am really hoping for a great remake.
I also saw the original airing of Salem's Lot in November of 1979 when I was 9 years old. I was in my stylish 70's pajamas (not too different from the type Ralphie Glick wore floating at the window) and will never forget my first time watch this film. Barlow is still the scariest vampire of all time as far as I am concerned. My parents were unaware how intense this would be as they assumed it was another campy TV movie. Not for this one - a true Hollywood-level horror movie quality effort adapted for TV. I was horrified but captivated at the same time. Slept with my light on for like two weeks after. Years later when I found out the Barlow look was based on the original "Nosferatu" I learned that audience of this 1922 silent film classic were also horrified. Tobe Hooper definitely knew how to build the tension just like Hitchcock or even Steven Spielberg in "Jaws" for sure - and I always wanted to see more of Barlow, but just like Hitchcock, the less you show can make it even more terrifying to your imagination. Just watch the Ned Tebbets jail scene where you get the first brief but terrifying glimpse of Barlow. And yes a visit to Ferndale CA to see the original film locations is on my bucket list too. Here is another great fan site resource for this film > Salem's Lot Then and Now: sites.google.com/a/blowupthenandnow.com/salem-s-lot-then-now/
Thanks Charles! I love that website and it's a great resource if you ever want to visit the filming locations. Thank you so much!
@@Everything-hw4jb Absolutely. And yes finding out the Marsten House was just a movie set was like finding out there is no real Santa Clause....
Love this. Nothing more surreal than visiting the actual locations where your favourite film was shot decades before. I toured all the locations where the original 1973 film The Wicker Man was shot. Great road trip, great memories.
Thank you. That would be super cool. Do you have pics?
@@Everything-hw4jb I shot the whole trip on video. But its a bit amateurish and needs an edit. I keep meaning to produce it but haven't got the software to do it right. I also did one of the locations from Withnail and I, back in 2012.
@@meyou-gi8xq I'd love to see it if you put it out
@@Everything-hw4jb I will give it a rough cut and send you a link. Thanks, really appreciate the interest.
They nailed it. I actually wanted to be a part of the salems lot community because it felt so real, that's the mark of a great screenplay and of course the ensemble cast elevated the story above your average vampire movie.
Thank you. I totally agree with you.
Its really cool to see the location's like the antique shop, etc. Salem's lot is my favorite movie since I seen it on TV at 8 years old. Scared the hell outta me back then.
I was also 8 when I saw it first. Glad you liked the video.
This is really cool! Salem's Lot scared the heck out of me when I first saw the movie. I can still picture that kid floating outside the window! Great job finding all the filming locations.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I hope to go back this fall.
Loved this. When the USA opens up for us Brits, I'm adding this to the list.
Awesome! You'll love the town.
Aside from the Salem's Lot following, it honestly is a charming town. I always feel centered and complete every time I visit there. My favorite thing to do is grab coffee and walk over and sit in the Ferndale cemetery.
If you love this film like I do (my favorite vampire film), you'll enjoy this little tour. Living in the state, I have been to Ferndale several times (and even stayed in that Victorian Inn you see at the beginning), and it's a great little Victorian town. Makes me want to go again - and watch the film again!
I absolutely love this town. I'm ready to go back and take my wife this time.
Awesome this movie scared the shit out of me when I was 12 yrs old now it's got to be the best Stephen King movie ever with the help of Tobe Hooper
Exactly right!!
I saw the movie on local TV it was a special presentation that was Halloween of 1991the window scene with Danny was the most terrifying !!
John fae Scotland I am 54 this film still scared the sh*t out of me when I was a boy.
I love this movie, and love the locations.
I've seen a few of these Salem's Lot filming location videos and I think this is the most comprehensive so far.
Thank you!
This is a great video. The book and original miniseries have been my favorite since the 1970’s. My kids presently live in California, so I’ve been to Universal Studios many times. I always assumed they reused the Psycho house. If you take the backlot tour, it’s the right elevation, look (when not A-B’d) and everything. I think it’s cool the Army guy let you into his house. I know though wanted the view through Ben’s window, but we have to respect the guests privacy of course. This was a really enjoyable post for me. Thank you!
Thanks Scott! I was so lucky to be able to go inside the house. Next time I go, I may have to stay there.
@@Everything-hw4jb That would be really cool. Is there any chance you watched Chapelwait? My fiancé had it on and I was kind of an ass because anything other than the original miniseries and the book have been lacking in every way. So, eventually I start to watch the thing because I can’t just be a jerk about it as she thinks she’s doing me a solid because of my love for the story. It’s fantastic! It’s one of those things that King didn’t write but had his blessing and it worked. Very good! Very retro! Lol, so I had to do all the cooking and cleanup for a couple of weeks because of my original stance and unwillingness to be open minded lol. Check it out. Definitely worth the time.
Been to Ferndale myself, beautiful town. Not much has changed since the movie was made.
True, it looks very much the same!
Lookn at the location of Ferndale its like actually being in the fictional town of SL! I wish i had the means to visit such an iconic location of one of my apsolute ALL time fave movies ever! T y for giving ppl lije myself a glimpse of places i will never be able to visit in real life! X
I like these small U.S. Towns a million Miles from anywhere...
Me too! I love Ferndale.
I had no idea Eva Miller's boarding house was the old rectory & had been moved. Very cool that he gave you a tour!
Yes, super cool guy. I was so lucky to be there at the right time.
How many of us had to change their Shorts after seeing for the 1st time the all-famous *_Jail Cell Scene_* where BARLOW makes his first "Hi There!" appearance (?)
Yes, love how they did that! The very first appearance of his face and it's basically a jump scare.
I really wish they had left that Marston House standing up. That would have been hecka cool.
Definitely! If I had millions, I would build a replica in that spot.
One of my favorites!! Watched this as a kid so many times. Awesome video man, thanks for sharing 🖤
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Wow, really impressed with some of the locations you found! (the Norton House, where Ben & Susan meet, etc.) I've wanted to visit Ferndale for years now, ever since finding it on Google Earth... :) I''m hoping the cinematography in the upcoming film is comparable to the '79 version. Glad I found your channel - thank you for sharing!! :)
Thank you so much! I have high hopes for the new one too. I hope you make it to Ferndale, we'll be back there this Fall.
This was awesome Danny. I am so glad you got to go see the town of Ferndale and the locations from our favorite movie. I loved hearing the history of the house that served as Eva Miller’s in the film. I may have to stay there on my next journey to the town. Also, I am going to seek out that locations for Gillespie’s house, which I missed, the road when Ben drove into town and sequoia park in Eureka. That looks amazing. You rock brother. Thanks so much for doing this. Best always
Thanks Ben! Gillespie's house is just down the road from the cemetery. I'm hoping we can get some guidance on where the scene happened in Sequoia park. I'm hoping to go back out there some time.
Tank you so much for all the work you put into this. Salems Lot is my favorite King book, and my most favorite vampire movie ever. I watched the mini series back in 79, was so amazing.
My pleasure. I am glad so many people like this video tour.
This movie still packs a wallop!
Yes, it does!
Wish I had known about this town when we were on the west coast in June! We went through Eureka and could have easily made a change. Oh my goodness.
It's such a great little town. I loved it.
I eat sleep breathe and live salem's lot movie! Lance Kerwin aka mark petrie was n stil is my ❤ tv crush! X
Great video, very much hope to visit Ferndale for myself one day.
I hope you make it. It's such a great place.
@@Everything-hw4jb I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to filming locations.
To add👉 ferndale looks similar to the area whare i reside! Woodcote a small rural english village in south Oxfordshire England UK!
Salem's Lot is my all-time favorite horror movie! I loved it as a kid and still do! Just watched it again last night. I enjoyed your video, you captured all the great places! All the best!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I watch it almost every Sunday afternoon.
Wow amazing you found the park spot when Ben meets Susan for the first time. Definitely looks to be the spot. I thought that would never be found! 😃👍🏻
Thank you! I had almost given up. Glad I went over to that spot.
Super nice of that gentleman to show you Eva Millers boarding house and give some background info
Yes, very nice! I was so lucky.
Only just come across this video. You did a great job. Best wishes from England.
Thank you very much!
Amazing video, Fendale, population 2013.
Thank you!
Wow,you got a look inside Eva miller's boarding house were Ben stayed, proper geeking out watching this, kudos,'salems lot' is simply the very best and scariest vampire movie ever made, period, nothing comes close for me.
I agree with you David. I was so lucky to be there at the right time and meet the owner.
Looks exactly how I pictured it in the book. Have you guys heard the remake might be heading to Max?
Yes, we have heard that. I just hope we get to see it at some point.
Very nice video! I think that the first place at the park, where the steps are, could’ve been the filming location.
It could be. I'm hoping to be back there this coming Sunday and maybe we can investigate it more.
Gracias Danny por tus videos 😊
De nada
This is great!!! I love this…
Thank you!!
David Soul could've used a better haircut.
I was shocked to find out about Lance Kerwin's death.
I loved the opening credits theme and style.
If i had a few million, I'd create Salem's lot themed dark ride.
Lance's death was a shock. I would LOVE a SL themed dark ride!
A mí me encantó la escena de el parque ( fortuna) cuando Ben mir y su se conocen 😊
Me gusta la escena también.
Just found this, nice woik bruva. Lemme know next time and I’ll drive down and do lunch.
Thank you! We are talking about going back next summer for the 45th anniversary.
Great Video!
Thank you!
This is soooo cool. Subscribing!
Thank you so much!!
Such a great film . Really interesting vid . Cheers . Ps - Its my fav film as well .
Thank you!
Siempre me gustó el cine negro Classico 😊
Estoy de acuerdo
Es muy bonito su trabajo 😊
Gracias!
1. Exorcist
2. Salem’s Lot
3. Exorcism of Emily Rose
4. Conjuring
5. Conjuring 2
My top 5
Great list! The Exorcist definitely shook more people up than any other movie.
Love the film myself and saw it in 79 (when it seemed all my grade 6 classmates were watching it too) and then again about 20 years ago when I rented the DVD.
Now I’m trying to watch it again but can’t find it anywhere !! Do you know of any sources?
Just watching this great video of yours has me craving it again
I bought the movie on Amazon Prime. I watch it almost every Sunday. Glad you liked this video. Thanks
@@Everything-hw4jb thanks. Amazon Japan has what I thought was the movie but it was, in fact, a pretty mediocre Return To Salem’s Lot.
I just found it on Google (via UA-cam) and I’ve convinced my wife to watch it. It’s a TV movie, how scary can it be honey?
😆 muhahahahaha
Wouldn't it BEEN cool if the new remake would have been filmed in Ferndale!...Any idea why it wasn't ? ?
That would have been cool. No idea why they moved it.
I live near a place called Ferndale in the UK (CF43-4PS)
Can you list the address of some of the places because I couldn't find many and you found them:
1. Sheriff's house
2. When Ben meets Susan (I think you said Fortuna, but where?)
3. Jason Burke's house
4. Susan's Parents house
Maybe you could put this in your description?
Hey, great idea. I'll work on this asap.
Any news on the new Salem's Lot 🍿 movie Babylon was flawed!!!
Not really. There have been a few rumors lately but nothing solid.
Cool
Thanks!
I've been there many times and stayed in Larry Crockets real estate place which is now a room at the Victorian Inn
That's awesome! I didn't realize that was part of the Victorian. Thanks for the info.
That's awesome! I didn't realize that was part of the Victorian. Thanks for the info.
Hey Danny,
I got a huge favor to ask of you...I'm heading to Ferndale this next coming May. Not only am I a massive fan of Salem's Lot, I also have a very soft spot for Ferndale. I live about roughly 8 hours away from it and have been there twice. Only this 3rd time is extra special. I'm proposing to my lady. Is there anyway of getting in contact with you to ask a couple of things? I figured the only way to start was here on UA-cam..
Sure hope to hear from you in someway!
Hey! Absolutely! Shoot me an email at danny_evans@bellsouth.net and we'll get together.
One thing I forgot to mention in an earlier comment, are we sure the the scene where Danny and Ralphie were in the woods was actually filmed on location ??...I know Ron said it was but I seem to recall an interview where David Soul stated that scene was filmed on a sound stage!...Its hard to believe that for logistical reasons and safety concerns that they would take two young kids, and an older man out there at 2 or 3 in the morning...Also that area has natural predictors such as bears and snakes!...I know looking back on events when I was 12 or 13 I sometimes remember things a bit different then they actually were!...No disrespect intended, just a curious thought!
Yes, Ron and I talked about this and he gave a lot of detail about that night He was there until the middle of the night. They even brought in giant fans to create the wind. I tend to believe it was filmed there.
cool men👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks! 😃
@ Everything 101 I just saw a real estate website top view of the Marsten House location and it appears to be a cemetery now. Did you notice this when you visited?
Hey, there is a small cemetery right next to it. If you walk up to the cemetery, you can look through the trees and see the back of the house. The main cemetery is right next to that small cemetery.
@@Everything-hw4jb Yes several had corrected me and told me I was to far past the actual Marsten location. They look very similar though...except for all the graves. LOL Hey thanks for responding to me though. Have a nice day.
@@stanlee2589 No problem. I actually just saw the conversation on the page. Glad you got it worked out. It can be confusing looking online sometimes.
Cuando vas a venir a chile 🇨🇱?
No sé. Tal vez 2025?
I was in Ferndale recently and found most all of the locations. But my Rohner Park visit which I thought I found the right spot doesn't seem to line up with yours. I entered the park from Fortuna and took a left turn then shortly after found what I thought was spot to the left. Where and which direction did you take in Rohner Park to find the spot?
Hey! When I turned into the park, there was a straight road that leads to the parking areas. The spot from the movie is actually right at the beginning of that road on the left. So, as soon as you enter from Main St, park your car and walk to the tree line on the left side. Where were you?
@@Everything-hw4jb I entered the park and the road was in a circular clock like direction so I would have been in roughly the 7 o clock spot which seems similar to your description. Mine looked a little different and yours accurate from movie. There was a small stream on bottom of hill from where I was at. Maybe I was close but several yards from your spot idk. And btw I live in Vermont in the area where they filmed A Return to Salems Lot which was a sequel in name only to the original. Many hate the sequel but I liked it perhaps in part cause I saw it first and I think the movie scenery near where I live and music made it pretty good. So I liked both but for different reasons though the original was obviously much scarier!
@@clgearhart Sounds like we were very close to the same spot. I agree, most SL fans don't like the Return to Salem's Lot movie.
@@Everything-hw4jb just curious what was your take on it? I liked A Return to Salem's Lot better than the 04 remake which didn't do much for me. Interestingly they filmed Halloween III in Loleta down the road from Ferndale which was another sequel in name only movie. Be interesting how both sequels would have fared had they not used the Salem's Lot and Halloween name in them.
@@clgearhart To be honest, I was not a fan of that movie. I felt the acting was very lacking and I just don't think it should have even been titled anything related to Salem's Lot.
Big error to point out... you should have spliced in some of the movie when showing these sites? Maybe "redo" and post the correct method. Chop Chop, get to it!
Good points. Honestly I didn't want to put too much in there and cause some copyright/monetization issue, but I probably should have just gone for it.
not you ,not boogeyman ben have not gone up and knocked on the door of marsten house,,maybe their have photos or some memoris of that time.....
True, when I was in Ferndale I got a lot of backstory on that house. I don't think the people living there now were there when it was being filmed. I would love to speak with those people who were there though. I do have a possible lead on some photos though. Still working on it.
@@Everything-hw4jb cool
Anyone know where the new version is filming?
Yes, they are in Ipswich, Massachusetts.
@@Everything-hw4jb thanks for getting back to me, so pleased they’ll be using a North East location
Mi nombre es Martha te amo ❤️
Gracias amiga.
The title of this makes it sounds like you’re presenting filming locations for SALEM’S LOT (the 2021 film) rather than the 1979 film.
I hadn't thought of that. May I can think of a better way to word it.
@@Everything-hw4jb I put the filming in Ipswich on UA-cam. ua-cam.com/users/pixiecropolis Dave Welsh - Pixie Video Productions
