    Hi!
    I've just came across your channel because I'm kinda struggling setting my camera for video. I've changed all that in the Manual mode and hopefully tomorrow I'm gonna get to film what I had in mind. I've done a small test and I think it works, looks more cinematic.
    Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the video :) For some reason my d5300 has been taking a long time to take a picture when I press the "take picture" button. While it's taking that time I end up accidentally moving the camera just a smidget and the picture ends up blurry in motion. Do you know how I can shorten the time it takes to take a picture? Or anything else that might help? Thanks :)

      Turn it to manual. Nikon's have notoriously slow AF. On manual it will use the high speed shutter action.

    Hi Travis. I'm a little confused why you set your ISO so high? It was up near 10,000? I have always gone for the lowest ISO for film for less noise and grain. And also with motion picture I use a low ISO. Are you introducing more grain for the film look as opposed to digital?

      For shooting Cinematic footage is often shot in 24p Footage you want for slow motion is shot at higher rates of 60p or 120p then slowed down. Action shots also need higher frame rates to capture all the motion. For post you are pretty safe to use 24p for cinema and 30p for television.

    Hey man ! So I bought a d3500 a month ago for my fitness page on Instagram. Started shooting and I changed the resolution to 1080*1080 on adobe premiere to match Instagram's resolution. Turns out the quality is horrible compared to my brother's iphone X. Like you can clearly see the gap... Same room and I also have 2 soft boxes so I have plenty of light... Is the camera worse than my bro's iPhone X or I just suck with the camera ? It's frustrating I don't know what to do , should I just buy an iphone X or invest on a new camera ?

    • @TravisMThompson

    But also have a class 10 memory card. I use the sandisk extreme class 10. Lower class cards can't write fast enough to keep up which causes skips during the shoot. So if you are having issues with this, it isn't the camera, it's the card...

    If I have understood correctly, picking 1/50 as your shutter speed (approximately twice the number of frames per second) is a standard technique. This combination allows for a fairly wide choice of aperture and ISO. For bright areas (outside), rather than use a filter, would there be any problem with using a faster shutter speed? If there is a problem, what is the disadvantage? Thanks for your video.

    • @TravisMThompson
      @TravisMThompson  3 роки тому

      The whole reason ND filters were created was for this problem it is not recommended to change the shutter speed.

    • @JhonCunningham
      @JhonCunningham 2 роки тому

      Dear Francis I would recommend you to first set up the ISO according to the amount of light on the scene, never over 800 to avoid grain. Them you should choose your lens (mm) and the f number (composing the frame). This is very important since the definition is set by the f number. And only them you should choose a shutter speed. There is no rule regarding ¨twice the number of frames per second¨. The shutter speed must be choose giving the speed of the object you have in focus (for sports you will need a faster shutter to avoid blur images and for stationary objects like a portrait the shutter speed wont matter much). Set these parameters first to create your best image and if there is too much light use a ND filter, this is the real reason ND filters were created: to maintain the setting of theses parameters which are responsible for the definition and quality of the image. You have a little room to play with shutter and f number after setting the ISO but remember that you want a clear image regarding the speed of the object (shutter speed) with the maximum definition possible (f number) unless you are creating something with the filed depth but that is another photography treatment case. Hope it helps !! All the best.
