- It's July, statistically my least favorite month. So I thought "why not exacerbate my summer blues even further by playing and talking about the most depressing game I've ever encountered?!" With the impending U.S. election and the imminent Project 2025, this is my attempt to make meaning out of living in such cruel and contradictory times.
This is part 1 in a 2 part series on Signalis. This part focuses on the cruelty of the gameplay and the works of Allison Landsberg and Viktor Frankl (and to a lesser extent, Mark Fisher). Part 2 will concentrate on the history Signalis pulls from, in addition to identity and what that might mean in contemporary times.

Another point to the inventory management, on oct '23 they changed the flashlight and the eye to take no space to be equipped.

It's a toggleable option, alongside being able to increase your inventory to 8 spaces.
It's something special when you subscribe and can actually see the number change.

After finishing the game on Casual with Extended inventory, I am now replaying in Survival with Classic 6.
Near the end of the first playthrough, the combat no longer felt clunky. I can evade attacks more often than not, and find moments to aim.
I can't say that fighting on Survival is "fun", but it is very "engaging". Which is probably a better way to phrase "do games have to be fun?" - "does this game make you want to continue?". In this case, with early exception before the gameplay clicked, yes it does.
My favourite element, however, is the way they let the oppressive government be the source of dread. Monsters? Paranormal? Surrealism? The true horror was the government we supported along the way.
Edit: the incinerator actually has a plate with text explaining how it works! It's right beneath the knobs.
