  • Welcome Gardeners! Join me today for my May Back Garden Tour! The garden is in its peak and everything is growing in nicely. One of the things I love most about these garden tours is it gives me the opportunity to think out loud about the progress of my garden. It really does help me decide where I’m going to go next so thank you all for giving me the opportunity to do that! 😆 Enjoy!

I was having the same issues with our bird feeders. I switched to a bird feed labeled "no mess patio mix", it's meant not to sprout - i think it has peanuts and shelled sunflowers? We got it from a local nursery, I think they sell it at pet supply shops too. We've also noticed a lot of different birds since we switched.

slugs: crush egg shells to about a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch size, make uninterrupted ring of the eggshells around the base of the plants. This works because the shells can cut the slug's outer skin.

It would look really pretty if you put a single feature plant under each trellis opening (the same plant). If you had the same juniper evergreen centred under each trellis opening under the honeysuckles that would look amazing, instead of the trellis and other stuff. The repetition would look amazing, Just a thought!

For the bird seed I would recommend getting seed only for the birds you want to attract. For instance, only safflower seed for cardinals and house finches. I don't use black sunflower seeds because birds need to crack the shell and then there is shell mess on the ground below the feeders. Sunflower kernels (already shelled) work nicely. I feed lots of birds and I wonder where you get your seed to have it sprout? Big box stores sell combination bird seed that has a lot of filler in it that is a waste. I'm not sure the type of birds you want to attract, but a local bird store like Wild Birds Unlimited can help. Good luck! 😊

This is so so beautiful! I love the honeysuckle! Can I ask what direction your side yard is oriented? I know you said it gets some afternoon sun but how long is it? I live pretty near Davis and my side yard runs north south and is pretty narrow like yours. Mine gets some afternoon sun but that’s really it and I’m wondering if I can do honeysuckle! My hubs just bought one of the pink varieties at Green Acres to grow on our gazebo and I’m interested to see if it bakes since it’ll right in complete full sun.

Beautiful garden. But about the bird feeder weeds… I would not use that kind of bird food. It’s full of filler that they will not eat and will just toss them out. That is where you are getting all that grass from. Use black oil sunflower seeds or chips. Your birds will go NUTS over it. And it’s a cleaner food. Good luck

Just a thought, if you remove those pots beneath the bougainvillea and replace with maybe boulders and other size rocks, or maybe other dry/full sun plants like cactus etc you’d still have interest there, and not the water issues. And you can put the pots near the bench along the fence for some more interest.
Also, with the foxglove, and you’ll find this the more you mature as a gardener, you need other colors to set that color off. So if you surrounded it with a lorapetalum and hakonechloa, or planted a smokebush behind the bench, they would really stand out. Think about the colors on a color wheel. ;) It is looking great, keep up the good work!

What kind of peony did you have planted next to your apricot foxgloves? Looks like it has seed pods forming! I would love to try growing them, I know they take years but it’s cool that they don’t always bloom true to their parent plant so you don’t know what the blooms may look like 😊 you should try to grow them! Scarify them put them in vermiculite until you see roots form then place container in fridge until you see first leaves and then pot the babies up! And see what you get in a few years, their foliage is pretty too even without blooms❤

If you don’t mind spending a little more money, the gold finches will eat Nyger bird seed. No sprouting and the small shells left over will add to the mulch. There is feed catchers that attach to the feeders that catch the extra feed that they drop. I just switched to only sunflower seed for my feeders. Also if u put a bunch of pavers together with containers on the pavers under the feeders the pavers could keep the seeds from seeding in the dirt and the small birds will clean up the feed. I have mind over jade containers and driveway and the birds do a great job cleaning the feed on the cement with any feed I give the birds

The back corner is looking beautiful. I agree the orange flower has to go, definitely more blue and purple is the way to go. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

I agree. Blues and yellows maybe. I visted a castlegarden one day and saw a huge flowerbed with only deep bleu and bright yellow flowers, You could see them from so far away, it was mindblowing!

Great garden tour! You will have to move the Wichita Blue. They get very large and if you continue to prune them to keep them small they will start looking woody. We grow them here in Canada and they are beautiful but like their space to grow and will get quite large. So hopefully you have a large area to accommodate it. As the colour does look nice in your zone!

@@rosiesingleton6480 yes they are gorgeous and slow growing they need a-lot of space. If you have a large yard and have the room they provide that silver blue colour that a garden needs year round and they don’t brown in winter either.

I’ve tried twice in my zone 3 and sadly they’re not hardy for Manitoba winters, but they are so pretty! Good luck for all those who want one! 🇨🇦

Beautiful yard! I use only black-oiled sunflower seeds in my bird feeders and the little birds love them! So much better than the messy bird seed mixes. Also, consider a nyger feeder for the finches. 🐦M

where do you keep your garden tools?

  • @DanikaBasista
    @DanikaBasista Рік тому

Quick fyi, if you’re growing tomatoes like that where they’ve got lots of space, you don’t actually need to prune suckers-it’s more for close gardening and to help air flow and an easier way to support their plants that people prune suckers (you’ll actually get more fruit per plant if you leave more of the suckers)
Love the backyard progression! Really interesting about the apricot color from a distance

Girl you should put an espalier behind your greenhouse and let put in your own star jasmine to climb up or to
Allow your neighbor’s star jasmine to clump on.

Birdfeeders certainly can be messy! Key is feeding the right kind of seed. Nothing with millet or other filler in it. Sunflower hearts or niger seed or peanuts (for bluejays) work best in zone 5b. Beautiful gardens!
