I played with Michael Bourn and he’d had knee surgery in the offseason. He ran right before I did and I watched him run a 6.30 with a noticeable limp as he went. Fastest person I’ve ever seen. I ran a 6.70 and thought I was relatively fast. I can relate. Elsbury was fast too. Enjoyed the story.

Yooo I loved this story. There's also a story about him that his mother (who's Native American) used to rub feathers on his feet as a baby because it was tradition to do that in order to make your child a good runner. Pretty wild mythology behind that guy, especially for a dude who only recently exited the big leagues.

Cool story Matt! So you knew long before most of us Red Sox fans how FAST Ellsbury is. Got my introduction to it in 2007 when he was on 2nd and decided to score on a sac fly to left center at Fenway. It wasn't even close and the throw was good. Course then he stole home on Andy Pettite of the Yankees...which was hilarious. 6.2 in the 60 yd dash....silly fast!

Reminds me of this one time my homie & I checked out a Valley-Cats game against the Lowell Spinners back in the mid-2000s, this is Short Season Single-A, but we are excited to see (he being a Red Sox fan) one of their biggest prospects, Jacoby Ellsbury. We read about his outrageous wheels and immense speed, and we were eager to see it in action, whichever way the cosmic universe would let it play out... and oh boy it certainly did.
The guy had 3 triples and a SB that game. If an Outfielder wasn't going to shag it off at least one bounce, the guy was determined to turn it into a 3-bagger. One of the best demonstrations of pure athleticism and world-class sporting I've ever seen.

I graduated HS and was good friends with the kid who was the PA '96 state champ in the 100 and 200 meter dash. I constantly tried to race him thinking once, maybe once I'd beat him. It never happened....

Questions that I would like answered. What do agents do for the player besides negotiating contracts and endorsements? Do you have to pay state income tax in every state you play in? Do agents help with investments and financial planning or are you on your own?

Hey Matt. Do MLB-AAA players pay close attention to other teams roster moves on a day to day basis? In 2008 would you know if someone on the Diamondbacks had gotten designated for assignment or if someone had just been placed on the disabled list? Perhaps thinking about whether another organization would be a better place for you to be. The 2008 Padres had a lot of middle infielders that season.

6.2 is pretty close to Olympic runner speed, if not already there. 5.99 is the (kind of) official record for 60 yards, with some faster but unofficial times.
60 yards is rare for Olympic runners and mostly a baseball thing. 60 meters is more common.

Injuries kept me from playing baseball beyond High School, but I imagine I would have had the same experience as Matt here eventually if I kept playing. I was fast, but more along the 4.6 range for a 40 time. Racing against 4.2 speed is another level and you might not see it in your local area.
