    Snowshoes are so much fun! We had gotten lucky and found some super cheap at a thrift sale - and tried them out and loved them!

      That's great! I've been snowshoeing the last couple days - it's hard work in the deep snow!

    Great options and wonderful explanations. I'm still in consideration mode and may just wait now for end-of-season sales. Prefer something on the narrow side, but also must carry my over 200 lbs. Thanks for this one...Bruce and Otis

      The old fashioned wood and wicker snowshoes may be another good choice if you don't plan on needing traction. I watched a video a while back that showed how they work much better from a flotation perspective than these modern snowshoes. It's a tradeoff!

    Great info Seth! Looking like I might actually need a pair this winter 🤞oh and now I see how you stay in such good shape. It’s not the ultra marathons, it’s the dumbbells in the back ground 🤣 💪

      Haha, I nearly pulled the damn thing down on my head yesterday. I just started getting back into some P90X3 videos last week - need to make the strength training a regular thing again.

      Well I was planning on heading to NH this weekend but this snowstorm is screwing up my plans - not even sure we'll be able to get out of our driveway, let alone drive up to the mountains!

    Perfect timing!! I have been using Northern Lites Backcountry snow shoes.. 30 in.
    I just picked up a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent 30.. needed more aggressive crampons after my last trip in the Daks. The Northern Lites are awesome, so lightweight.. not that aggressive though.. but they are good for just in case..like if i need to carry them on my pack.. and they go on and off so easy. Nice video here.. thanks for posting!!

    Really nice review, Seth! I've gone through about 4 pairs of snowshoes, too, and looked at both of those MSR models. My current pair, from Crescent Moon in Colorado, has a ratchet system which I really love, but they are not aggressive enough for some stuff we do. The MSR Explorers did get some bad reviews, but still, I might try those. Now that I've gone to ratchet bindings, I really can't bear the thought of bending over and trying to crank on buckles any more.

    • @RhodySeth
      @RhodySeth  2 роки тому

      I also really like the ratchets but they did hurt my feet after a while. This new strap system should work pretty well, I’m already getting used to it.

    Interesting Seth. I don't own a pair and have been considering the MSR ones....they are so expensive though for the little use I would have for them in Scotland....cheers Paul

    • @RhodySeth
      @RhodySeth  2 роки тому

      Yeah they ain't cheap - and in fact when I bought mine at REI they were only selling them to members because supplies are so limited. It's funny how many pairs we own considering how little snow we get these days in Rhode Island but it looks like we're about to get dumped on this weekend so they may get some use!

    Nice video Seth. I'd like to find a shorter snowshoe than my Tubbs Flex. The heel lifts are nice but took me some time to get used to.

      Next time you're passing through North Conway stop at IME. Their consignment basement often has a mix of snowshoes. They had a 22" pair of MSRs which were tempting but I had just purchased the Ascents.
      When do you ship out for Alabama?

    • @BearTrekAdventures
      @BearTrekAdventures 2 роки тому

      @@RhodySeth I didn't even know that place existed. 22" would probably be a good size for me. Unfortunately I got Covid a couple weeks ago. I spent almost an entire 2 weeks in bed while my body weakened. I just managed to get out on a couple local walks the past couple days...boy does my pack feel heavy after doing nothing! I'm trying to shoot for 3rd week in Feb, but I need my energy to return first.

    How apropos! I am literally today eyeing a pair of snowshoes. I also just got back from Liberty & Flume. I used Hillsound trail crampons, but I'm wanting to go to less popular trails, or don't want to wait for trails to be broken out for me after snowfall. MSR Lightning Ascent's all sold out everywhere, so I am very much considering the Tubbs Mountaineer in 30 inch. That seems possibly too long, but it's going to depend on your weight + gear. What is your geared up traveling weight?

    • @RhodySeth
      @RhodySeth  2 роки тому +1

      During a winter day hike I may be totaling 170 lbs but winter backpacking would bump that up to 190 lbs. It's definitely a trade-off between how much flotation you want and how cumbersome those 30" would be to use.

    • @GetUpTheMountains
      @GetUpTheMountains 2 роки тому

      @@RhodySeth Indeed. I weigh ~170-175lbs to start with, so a Baltoro full of the winter goods is going to take me into the 200-210 and maybe more range. Thats still within the 25" charts, but those are really hard to find right now. I might have to hold off this year and wait till the summer restock or maybe some used ones. I'd hate to drop $270 on a pair and regret it.
