    • @Hartlor_Tayley

A Hard Days Night the movie. I think as good as their records and concerts were this movie was the most influential thing they ever produced. The Concept and meaning of being in a rock group was forged here. All those bands formed in the mid sixties and beyond were conceived because of this movie. Jerry Garcia said he formed the Grateful Dead the day after he saw the movie Jefferson airplane too. Velvet underground and Dylan went electric etc. the effect in Britain was even more pronounced. It’s a really good movie and you’ll smile the entire time. It documents the Beatles on the cusp of unprecedented popularity and greatness and you can feel the shifting culture and a new generational aesthetic. Highly recommended, if it were up to me I would have had you watch the movie before the records.

Yes great idea to view AHDN however those growing early leather years are more intriguing to me ! I would like to view your reactions to their trial with Decca and a good workout with those BBC tracks ! For instance :- Soldier Of Love , Sure To Fall , Some Other Guy , Young Blood and of course the first and only Lennon & McCartney song I'll Be On My Way. 👁️😹🤡🔥

I've always happened to think this song is GREAT! Really great. Profound. And yes, utterly trippy: we go up; we peak; we come down. Ouch. And at the end, when it turns into "too much too much...", it's just exactly what we do: we take insight/inspiration/ enlightenment and turn it into a mechanical routine, the soul having been removed. Amazing! And Yellow Submarine is a movie to watch MANY times.

  • @WILLKMC

" With your long blond hair and your eyes of blue, the only thing I ever get from you is Sorrow" Sorrow, was released by The McCoys in the UK in 1965 then in 1966 by The Merseys, and in 1973 by David Bowie, it was the only single released in the UK from his Pin Ups covers album, reaching No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and staying in the charts for 15 weeks. It was also Bowie's first number-one hit single in Australia, which topped the charts for two weeks in February 1974.

It's incredible that this song got passed over in 1967-it could have been put (maybe) on Sgt. Pepper, or the Magical Mystery Tour LP which followed in that same year. But this was the fate of many of George Harrison's songs-often overlooked by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who were the dominant songwriters in the group. It's buried on this "odds and ends" album "Yellow Submarine", which is a real shame. It's a great song. The feedback at the beginning is really startling, to say the least, especially for its time. Thanks for doing this reaction; I'm really looking forward to watching this one!

George came to San Francisco hoping to see the psychedelic hippie experience at its origin. But, by the time he got there, the original hippies had all left and the area had been gone to homeless teenyboppers who came to find the same thing. Heroin had come into the scene by that point. The Haight Ashbury community had a funeral for the death of the hippie in January of 1967 so by the time the "Summer of Love" arrived, they were mostly gone. That's what George found and it freaked him out. It caused him to swear off acid.

"With your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue", heard a couple of times before the fade, was a line from 'Sorrow' by the Pretty Things, I believe, which also appears on Bowie's 'Pinups' album. Love the feedback off the top and the overall vibe and sentiments. Very much an artifact of its time. Worthy of repeated listenings.
'All You Need Is Love' should absolutely be the original worldwide broadcast version. Anything else from this soundtrack I'd opt for a clip from the movie itself. Definitely watch the movie too. I recall playing 'Lucy In the Sky...' for my kids in the mid-90s shortly after they'd seen the VHS and looked up to see my son enacting the movements from the animation. Enjoy.

I so much appreciate your expanding on the psychedelic nature and sensibility of the song and the Beatles in this and other periods. I, like you, feel that the psychedelic experience is essential to the human experience. My heart goes out to people who deny themselves this avenue for growth.
A single experience can stay with you for your lifetime, and I believe in a very positive way. It must be done with reverence, and with resolve.
I respect the fact that you say what you actually think. I feel validated for following you.

Oh dude!! You should gather the fam together and watch the Yellow Sub movie sometime. It's a masterpiece for young and old alike. Your beatles reactions are so fucking good. I grew up with them and was of the age to take psychedelics along with them. They go hand in hand. Back around 1972 or so, the big Lowes downtown movie theater in Houston ran all 4 Beatles flicks back to back , beginning at midnight, and culminating with Let It Be (which had just been released). 3 of my good buddies and I dropped acid after "Help" and started peaking about 1/2 way through Yellow Submarine. It was my first time seeing Yellow Sub. A memory that will hopefully never fade

George's under utilisation is definitely one of the issues that led to the split. That is very evident when he poured all his pent up songs into All Things Must Pass. They were just too great to contain all that talent without something eventually giving. As for acid, those were the days!

After they finished recording the very production driven Sgt Pepper's album the Beatles were worried that they had lost their live playing chops so during May 1967 they played live in the studio to try and get their live performance chops back together; ultimately resulting in the Let It Be project. One evening they continued jamming until 2am the next morning, the Abbey Road staff had long gone home and left them the keys to lock up the studio. It's All Too Much is the only track that has been released from this in-studio jamming period. With the great English line, "show me that I am everywhere, but get me home for tea." Great reaction as ever Mr Magic Music Ears ;)
