My dad used to whistle and sing this when I was growing up. I sat with him and held him the night he passed. I would so very much like to hear him sing it one more time. The time we have is precious use it wisely
Yes, so many of us learned it from our fathers - As it should be! I remember my dad sang this to me when i was a young boy. I lost my oldest brother, his first born, when I was 12 years old, and I don't recall hearing my dad sing it since then... I am performing it solo this St. Patty's Day, and I'll ask someone to record it so I can send it to him - he is now 94. I hope I don't fuck it up...
my father was a singer....boy was he a singer....he could fill the entire church with his booming voice....he sang Danny boy....still missing my dad all these yrs...
My mom's family was from Ireland and my Pa's from Scotland. This was played by bagpipes for them when they passed. Only five months apart, my dad wanted to go see his sweet heart and couldn't wait any longer.
My grandpa was a veteran and he loved this song. It was played on the bagpipes at his funeral six months ago. Thank you for making me feel close to him again ❤️
My grandfather was an awesome, stand up Irishman. 🍀 the night before he passed, I sat at his bed side and sang this to him, as we used to sing it together and he smiled 💔 I miss you, grandpa 💗🙏🏻🕊
This is my omas song, she passed right after the new years last year, I was there til the end, for her and my grandpapa, my son asks me to play omas song all the time, brings tears to my eyes every time. Rip oma, we love you
Just stunning. My dad and I would sit on the deck in the summer overlooking the water and drink scotch and belt out this song when we were reminiscing about friends and family gone too soon. When he passed and his ashes were spread I sang it alone. I always tear up when I hear it but this rendition made me cry. Tears of grief, happiness at a memory, release from so much stress that the world is in right now from the pandemic, that America is in from D.C., from the hate that holds the country, tears of joy from the pure beauty of their voices. Thank you for this. Tears are needed sometimes, they cleanse the soul. Put everything into perspective. Start a new day with a clean slate.
Being Irish American myself this song really speaks to me and even though it is very sad I think it’s a lovely song and it has powerful lyrics! Also this song makes me think of my grandfather because he loved this song as well🇮🇪👍
When I was 12 my father told me that he wanted this song to be played at his funeral. Although he has not passed, and hopefully has a very long life to live ahead of him, this song makes me cry every time I hear it. You guys did a great job!
I am from India. Mostly unaware about the back stories and emotions that Irish people have connected to this song. But I just heard it for the first time and could not stop my tears. Such a beautiful song!
This cover by Gentri, I love it too and listen to it very often. It's so beautiful and so uplifting. The other great cover of this that I like is that sung by Celtic Woman.
It is really a heart wrenching story of a father's love for his son. That translates to all cultures. But the thought that a dead father in a grave would be comforted knowing his son has returned and stands on the ground above him... I don't know - that just hits me so hard - I can't help but cry.
My brother is a traditional Irish Folk musician. One of the things he always said about this song is that as far as any one knows,it is the only Irish tune where a father expresses his love for his son.
THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN. IT GET'S TO ME EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT. IF IT DOESN'T TUG AT YOUR HEART STRINGS, I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. MY EYES ARE FILLING UP NOW.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My father’s best friend was a fine Irish tenor. The two of were cut of the one cloth and it was a singular family treat to be invited as a family to go visit his. The distance was far enough that travelling with a carload of little children, meant that it was at least an overnight visit, or more for a long weekend. Amongst my finest and most treasured childhood memories , is to hear him in my mind’s ear singing Danny Boy with all the energy of his very soul, as he went about his day, with his beloved setter at his side. It’s been a long time since last it was my pleasure to enjoy the household with his music and to hear his parents and in-laws speak Irish together. I hope they’re still enjoying their fine music the other side.❤

I don't know if you'll want to know this or not, but the "meaning behind the song" in this video is not true. Frederick Weatherly had a son who died in 1910, years before the war, and his name wasn't Daniel. He starting writing the song months before his son suddenly died.
The most amazing singing of this song! My Aunt sang this in church when her brother, my Uncle Jerry died. I never cried so hard, but this made me cry for awhile more. God Bless our Irish Heritage. I am so grateful for my family..I didn’t understand why the way they were, I understand now as I am the same.
I myself am german and so didn't crew up with music like this but i, and probably every over person has to accept that the Irish culture is beautiful. This Song is just so full of love and, in my eyes at least what art should be. This is a great work and i am happy that thus could make me cry for persons i didn't know.
This was my dad's favourite and was played at his funeral. This rendition is stunningly beautiful and made me weep. Remembering him on his birthday, today, until we meet again 💙

Seeing tears in his eyes i knew it held a very special place in his heart, now i also tear up whenever i hear this very special song. We will see each other again ❤
