Um, the dude has an Academy Award for Evergreen for which he only wrote the lyrics. He was nominated for the Phantom song score and Rainbow Connection. He wrote THREE #1 hits for the Carpenters. And he has been the President of ASCAP for the last 13 years. Oh and he acts. There is NOTHING underrated about this man.
You have to consider the context of pop culture in the 70s, and view stuff like this through that prism. He's still brilliant. Great actor and musician.
I actually remember Paul Williams performing this song on this show, which was supposedly aimed a children (I was one at the time that I first watched this). I don't think it was till a few years later that I bought the LP to The Phantom of the Paradise and all of the brilliant songs on it - most of which were written by Paul Williams. I still have that LP!
I first saw this as a distraction when I was 4 years old and I needed to be distracted from the pain of when my teeth tore through and desecrated my bottom lip. My lip is all better now and I listen to this song on repeat.
This is the first version of this song I heard, went looking for it at Tower Records, they said it is only on this basically little known soundtrack, "Phantom of the Paradise", which led me to one of the greatest soundtrack albums ever.
this song was originally ment for the death scene of beef's funeral but that whole scene was cut out. the tapping noise in the backround is because in the scene there was a little girl tap dancing on his coffen
@@theblazenotshawn5171 I'd heard that, too! And to me that explains the whimsical tone of the music paired with the dark lyrics, especially "If I had lived my life half as worthlessly as you / I'm convinced that I'd wind up burnin' too" Though that seems a bit harsh to say about Beef. After all, he was "a pro-FESS-sional"! 😎
Great! Finally found where this originated. I saw this show when I was a kid and remembered the story and this scene, but I couldn't remember if this was a movie or television special. I seem to remember it was a network television Halloween Special. I remembered Paul Williams, but couldn't remember on which show this was featured. The idea of being at a Halloween party at Dracula's Castle fascinated me so much when I was a kid that I've thought about it my whole life. Well, this Halloween I will finally, at age 54, attend a Halloween party at Dracula's Castle in Bran, Transylvania. Bran Castle is the castle that Bram Stoker saw a drawing of at the British Museum Library that he allegedly based his description of in the book, Dracula. The Halloween party is Saturday, November 2. Hope I get bitten by a vampire. :)
This was the first time I ever saw Paul Wiliams on TV I was 4 or 5 at the time and he really and his laugh really scared me! Now I just think he's cool!
He was also on an episode of The ODD COUPLE. Felix's daughter runs away to follow Paul Williams on tour. I was a little kid and couldn't understated why anybody would be so gaga over this little man with the strange voice.
Where on earth did you find this clip? This is AWESOME. I've always loved Phantom - had no idea Williams ever performed this song on television. What a great surprise to find this. A million thanks for posting it.
This is literally one of my first memories! I was 3 or 4 and this terrified me! I legit thought Paul was actually Dracula when he revealed the teeth and the people dancing were all monsters 😂 My mom said I had nightmares for weeks.
I couldn't stand Cuz Oliver, infact, that poor kid always played someone's cousin or the kid from out of town. Maybe he was some big name producer's grandson who could never get a good tv gig.....
7th Angel Hahah you're a riot. I saw him once as an atm hacker on Simon & Simon. What a badass. Hey, but I always thought I was the 7th Angel. Sabrina, Kelly, Jill, Kris, Tiff, Julie...Selina. ??
this comes from a nancy drew episode, in which it includes a bell man trying to not salute the german receptionist, i cackled when i watched this recently
0:19...is...is that a Barnabas mask from House of Dark Shadows? Because it sure as hell looks like it from here! Never seen this move, but I love the song, lol
Are you the Ron Quintana of Metal Mania fame? I used to get your mag, and enjoyed you commentary in the Raven documentary. Now look above for my comments about this clip.
@doublemandala Lorne Greene played a Transylvanial local who thought the whole event happening a Dracula's castle was blasphemous. I remember at the end of the episode, one of the boys sees a mirror as Greene's character passes by, and he has no reflection.

First of all, this Paul Williams looks like Udo Dirkschneider when the Accept vocalist had long hair. Also I hear a part of this song that sounds like Heaven and Hell from Black Sabbath (and this predates Sab's said song
"My music is for Phoenix, only she can sing it! Anyone else who tries, DIES!!"
@Amanda Clark It's a quotation from _Phantom of the Paradise,_ the movie this song was originally written for.

"Stop wasting it!"
I know of someone who requested this song played at their funeral. It's very dark and sad to me.
Dark and sad, yes. But something about this song also makes me feel hope. Like, we all feel this way, so we're never alone
Paul is such a great song writer...very underrated

I don't think so, He is an Oscar and Grammy winner.
What was this for ?
You don’t know what underrated means, do you? 🤨
He's also the best Penguin
You have to consider the context of pop culture in the 70s, and view stuff like this through that prism. He's still brilliant. Great actor and musician.
14 years later and you're still right. Writing this on the last day of 2023. 2024 will be Phantom of the Paradise's 50th birthday
Fact not fiction 😆 😆
Truer today more than ever lol 😂 😂
Even more impressive through that lens. Keep thinking it's an 80's era thing.

Shout outs to the guy rocking the Silver Shamrock skull mask.

1:55 This is kind of the best thing ever, just this one moment. It lives in my head rent-free. That's like the funnest evil laugh ever.
Can´t get this song out of my mind.....

this song was originally ment for the death scene of beef's funeral but that whole scene was cut out. the tapping noise in the backround is because in the scene there was a little girl tap dancing on his coffen
The sound is a type of twang on the guitar. They didnt use a throwaway clip from an outtake clip from Phantom of the Paradise.

This clip is from "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" episode "The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Meet Dracula" part 1.

Hardy boys mysteries
They have the vintage Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys series on Peacock. I went straight for this episode.

This is from Paul William's guest appearance on "the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries!"
Check out the one from the Brady Bunch Hour.

Swan. He has no other name.
I never knew they recycled this on TV. Those crazy networks execs...
Paul is the 70s
OMG such a 70s vibe. Is that Lorne Green I saw? And Paul is soo good, needs to do some David Lee Roth backflips to round out his show.
Me too! Though they dropped Nancy Drew from the last season, didn't they? :/
