WELP, we're at it again. Painting on my walls like I was never allowed to do as an angsty youth, hahaha. CAN'T STOP ME NOW!!! This time I went for a much more detailed approach and honestly, I'm STILL tired lol. But I hope you like watching and that it's sorta calming!
I love you all!!

this is such a perfect example of the "looks weird for 95% of the journey and then suddenly magically looks AMAZING" that so much of art is 😂
Also dramatic glam makeup, VERY trust the process.
Rachel: This probably won't be the last mural I do in this house
Me, vibrating with some gremlin energy while chanting: OFFICE MURAL. OFFICE MURAL. OFFICE MURAL. OFFICE MURAL.
LOTR inspired office mural 🤞🤞
Office mural ...office mural 🤭
You have mad skills, you do you, because you do it well.
The room with the Tudor wall “wood”?
what about magical office mural with a bookshelf that opens like a door to reveal the mural behind it?
Just think, if you paint a woodland mural in every room of your house, you’ll basically be living in the woods like a majestic nymph. Just saying.
My sentiments exactly!
one for each season!!
Wise words! 👏🏻
Otherwise known as my dream life
This is a very good point…. *Grabs keys and drives to craft store*
Mural painting tip from someone that’s obsessed with painting them: if you add white acrylic gesso(like $13) to any cheap acrylic paint(like 50 cent apple barrel paint) it makes it basically into thick body paint for WAY cheaper. It makes the paint go a LONG way too. :)))
you can also add corn starch to make thin paints thicker body
@@noaccount2494 Yup! That works really well too, but the gesso thing makes the paint go a longer ways.
I learned this trick as well! I was painting some props and bought gesso to act as a primer and was like ooo she thicc. So I mixed the two together and it made my cheap paint so much better
@@littlemzrainbowz98 Ikr! Similar to how I found out lmao
Thank you! I was gifted/inherited a bunch of cheap acrylic paint and that is what I was using. Now I can use what I have on hand and not have to worry about buying a lot more paint.
Rachel is living the best Rapunzel life now: spending time in the house in the woods, painting & looking gorgeous with her luxurious locks.
And she has her own Flynn to move stuff for her.
This is such a wonderful large-scale demonstration of blocking-in colour and working in layers to build a final image! Your soothing voice and chaos witch vibes are a welcome balm.
Ethan Rayne! there it is, God I've been trying to think of that for months, chaos witch txtxtx
As someone with literally zero artistic ability or experience...it’s so interesting to watch! I always just assumed that all the detail was done from the beginning. I guess like an artist just works left to right, or top to bottom, and finishes that section as they go? Idk haha. So to see the beginning stage of basic, one color cartoon style (brown tree. Green grass. Blue sky) and then the transformation with the addition of different colors and textures and layers, it blew my mind haha 🎨
@@lizap16 us painters start with rough shapes to decide where stuff goes, then we keep doodling at it until we like it. Anyone can do it. You can too!
It really is. Rachel, I know you don’t think you can teach this stuff… but you can. Think about monetizing this via a more detailed class that teaches people how to do this sort of blocking-in, layers, detail to final image. I suspect you’d be astonished at how many people would sign up.
we love a chaos witch
What I love about Rachel is that she is kind to herself… just like “I’m not trying to make it perfect… I’m just trying to make me happy”.
This is the best life quote
"Hope this wasn't too boring" Boring???? That was BEAUTIFUL to watch! There's nothing better than to wake up on saturday, make coffee and watch Rachel as she continues to inspire me

Your humble horrible idea muse here: what if you made a rapunzel style cat tower in the corner so it matches the fairytale aesthetic with faux stone & ivy?
YES
YES YES YES
BRILLIANT!
Yessss and yes!!! Cat needs,mrow!
🐈🐱🤟
Rachel: I hope this wasn't too boring.
Me: Eyes glued to her leaf painting wondering HOW she made them look so good.
She always says something like that while creating the most amazing things or just being very entertaining in general
Artists that understand shading and layers: Legit Wizard. I'm literally watching it happen in front of me, and my brain goes, "Nope. Just magic."
Literally same. I was just like, "how????? is she???? doing this????? WITCHCRAFT????"
True. I wouldn't mind watching here do that for hours upon hours, too. like, give me a 10 hours painting video and I'll watch it and be amazed from beginning to end 😂😂
Rachel: Stresses
Rachel: Dives in.
Rachel: "I don't know what I'm doing!" x23
Rachel: Creates masterpiece.
Rachel: *is happy*
I think this video exemplifies what it means to just get started on a project that seems overwhelming. I know a lot of planning went on behind the scenes that were not added to the video. However, what was added looked authentic in its emotional intensity and fear of starting and failing. Also included in this video is a triumph and the joy of accomplishment. Such is life and art.
The only way out is through!
@@katattack907 What do crafting projects and boot camp have in common? The only real way out of either mess is to push though it!
Who else is living vicariously through Rachel and her making her house into a whimsical happy place? Just me?
Totally :D
Yes!!
Seriously. Me.
Ha absolutely. The housing market where I live is garbage. Its going to probably take five years AND the death of my grandfather 🙃 (who's definitely not in great health) for me and my partner to be able to afford a small house, even in the form of shared ownership.
Me, too.
There's something about watching Rachel walk on screen, take a sip of coffee, and tell us hello that makes me feel instantly calmer and more hopeful.
😊❤️
Yeah!
Same. Feels like being home in a way.
"I want to be surrounded by whimsy." ~ The Most Rachel Maksy Statement Ever
This turned out absolutely gorgeous. I actually *really* enjoy watching you paint- those videos are so relaxing when you do the time lapse set to music. I hope you'll do more murals but also more paintings like the one from your honeymoon- maybe from other memorable moments in your life. You should definitely do a painting of your home in the spring when the leaves arrive! And then, hang them in your beautiful new home.
Ah yes, the universal artists' struggle: "I hate this I hate this I hate this oh wait it looks sick now" 👀 Always trust the process man, the beginning is rough. But it turned out so cute!
I don't do my makeup that often. So the whole time I'm applying it my mind is like, "I look crazy, I look crazy, I look crazy." Then I get to the end and I'm like, "oh! This looks nice! How did we get here?"
I think I really needed to hear this rn. Thanks.😂
I know you didn't plan it but this coming out on Earth Day seems perfect to me. Happy Earth Day fellow humans!
Happiest of Earth Day to you! 💜🌈
Yes! Happy Earth day!
Happy Earth Day!!! 🌎

Your first wall mural video is my go-to rewatch for self-care comfort, oh my goodness, there’s now another! So much happiness. Nothing like watching a painter paint.
Same!
Same ive watched it a million times
Oh my god same I fall asleep to the first one all the time
When Rachel says something in progress looks like garbage but it already looks nicer than anything I’ve painted in my life 😅
Dang that’s some casual talent
Well she did go to art school!
Her standarts are just higher
Is casual talent like casual armour?
@@basilwyrm really? I wondered if she had a background in arts

It's true!
"Little internet family" is so adorable and I'm glad I'm part of it :3
The life-sized-ness of this makes it look like you could literally walk into it, I love that!
"I hope this wasn't too boring to watch"
...Lady, that was one of the coolest things I've watched in a long time! Especially as someone who just barely started painting again and whose work currently is best described as "I haven't done this since middle school"
Watching you work through the “this sucks” part of the process is really inspiring😂 I give up too easy on art like that because I hate the early phase of ugly.
SAME!!!
Same!!
No matter how many times we tell ourselves to trust the process, we all experience the "OMG, what was I thinking" moment.
imagine putting a 3d textured stone arch to frame a mural like this, kinda like those fake foam wooden beams. i think i want to do something like this in my future home. amazing job!
I was thinking that too! She could do like plaster or drywall mud to make it textured!
Rachel: I hope this wasn't too boring to watch
My ass: *completely mesmerized the entire video*
Just.... the sounds.... Honestly, her running commentary is why I'm so stuck on watching her videos. She is me. The noises, grunting, groaning, laughing, random quoting or singing, I love it :)
Yes!!!!! This and the chaotic creative process. It is me all day!
exactly. That's my thoughts 😂 It's kind of watching myself 😂😂😂😂
Our own inner dialogues being given voice by Rachel.
I think it’s because she doesn’t edit herself out she keeps her personality in the videos which is what I love about her
I like how she starts off with no confidence and then ends up with something that I will probably never be capable of doing in my entire life. This turned out 100% fantastic!
Okay but when you're standing in front of it at the end there is a real sense of DEPTH! It's like you've stepped into an art work, a la Mary Poppins! 🥰
Let's be honest, Bob Ross would be proud that you decided to paint something. Not mistakes, only happy accidents.
"Happy little trees ..."
Yesss!!!!!!!!
I think it would be sooo much fun to do a Middle Earth themed mural! Rivendell, the Shire or Mallorn trees perhaps? :o
Mordor going up the stairs!
Yesss Rivendell, what a good idea
I second this motion!
shire mural >>>>>
Yeeeeessssssssss
I'm so so stunned by how such an intricate, highly rendered mural came to life in just a couple of days. Your eye for color is unmatched! And I'm especially in love with the sage-color leaves in the bottom left!
"Are you a full grown adult who lives their life in such utter chaos that you and only you can truly understand it? And also will spend hours upon hours on a DIY in utter disregard of your own man hours just to save a couple hundred dollars?" That pretty much describes me perfectly. Rachel is my hero!
Yes! I diy'd most of our seasonal decorations. They turned out way better than I thought. I saved a bunch of money. I put in a lot of freakin time. 😂
Rachel stumbles onto the secret of life... "I want to be surrounded by whimsy."
I’m getting it on a t-shirt. Lol
"Ready to paint some leaves? Too bad, I'm painting them." You've killed me with laughter with this quote. Thank you for making my day greater than it would have been otherwise!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: mrs maksy needs a Patreon. So many people would love to support your creative work that way and might take some of the pressure off. Also the mural came out so lovely!
And then one day, we will get the most coveted: long form Rachel content.

I'm an old 65-year-old woman in Odessa Texas and I enjoy watching you I think you do a wonderful job just about anything you do
Me, watching the process unfold: 😮😯😍
Rachel: I hope this wasn’t too boring to watch…
Me: ARE you KIDDING? It was ✨magical ✨
I wish more people liked having murals in their homes! It looks absolutely beautiful and I hope that one day I can paint murals in a home. It's so interesting because one day some kiddos are going to tell their friends that their mom painted the beautiful murals in their room/home. Very cool
my grandmother painted murals in every room of the family house. my favorite room was the jungle room thatvshe painted for my uncle. if you looked carefully you could see hidden in places...curious George and the Jungle book characters
i feel like when/if you ever have kids, you're going to be the mom that elaborately murals the kids' bedrooms every few years (i had that mom growing up, my room went from bugs to a jungle to a castle to a forest and it was AWESOME)
Wow!
I love that you celebrate your experiences!
I saw the paints you picked up and was like “Ohh nooo, she is in for a BAD time”. The “Oops” paints section from Home Depot or Lowes is a savior for large format paintings
Oooo nice tip!
I live in huntington beach and we have a recycling program for hazardous materials. You can go pick up up to 5 items/day & since finding this it has been my go to for paint. Sample jars from home depot or even full gallon sized buckets of paint ALL FREE!!! It's just kinda hit n miss for certain colors, but if you can mix, it's not that much of a setback. Great resource on budget! I've used mainly housepaints from there for the murals I've done.
You should check if your city has a similar program. They have cleaning products & gardening stuff too. It's great for many things.
the mural is so amazing!! but also, the brown hair just gets better and better, rachel is basically a walking Belle cosplay and I LOVE IT
Yes!! Her hair is so amazing!!
The ''moved into a new house, so mural-time'' is so recognisable. My mother painted a little mural for each sibling when we moved house when I was 6 or so. And then when we moved house and my father finnally finished building most of it, we were all allowwed to paint a mural in our own bedroom. I was 18 at the time, and ended up paiting 5 different murals for my siblings. It was great!
Now that I'm living with my finacé, I would love to paint another mural. But he grew up with paintings on the walls, so he's sadly not into it at all. XD
Can I suggest putting just a frame on top of your wall mural? It’ll be a mural painting on wall mix?
The final result is absolutely gorgeous 😍
Now I need a mural in my room 👀
Also blacksheep at the end 🤟
But also wants Rachel to come paint it for me
Omggg do it! 👀 your style is so much different from hers, I would love to see that 😄
Do iiiiiiiit
I would love to see a mural in your style!! Do itt!!
Your mural turned out wonderful, Rachel!
Rachel, consider getting a projector (new fangled or old school) for murals! It made a world of difference for me while painting theatre sets, helps with mapping it out. You did a beautiful job! 😊💚🌿
My kid is thinking of painting something like this but on a slightly smaller scale. Your idea of the projector is super helpful!
As someone with absolutely no artistic talent I hope Rachel recognises how frikkin awesome it is to just take a blank slate and turn it into something beautiful, I'm just sitting here starry eyed and in awe.
I know, right?!!!
I was coming here to say something similar. How amazing it must be to do something like that!!
Rachel:”the parts I messed up on”
The rest of us: “girl we couldn’t even begin to do this!”
"I want to be surrounded by whimsy." Now THAT is a motto that deserves to be made into a flag and nailed to the masthead! 😀
My daughter (who is 10 and very creative) and I watch your videos together. She loves your projects and your process. Thank you for showing all the parts of the process, good and ugh. My daughter has a very hard time with making mistakes, you help show the other side of that. Thanks! And you are amazing, by the way ❤️
Agreed!!
I also love that Rachel lives & shows taking breaks. Great role model!
As I feel there might be more murals - house paint. House paint is for walls, it's cheap and I've done many murals with it
I was just going to suggest the same thing since that's what my cousin used for the mural in her son's room. It worked perfectly and the mural looks amazing!
Same. "Testers" are so cheap. Doing a forest glade with house paint is cheap! Everybody should go for it!
Most muralists I know use house paint, I hadn't even considered there would be something specific for murals before she said it
@@PromisedJubilee testers at my local places are $10 each! I was so disappointed by that
Testers or you could buy large containers of primary colors and mix your own too!
When you started adding the leaves it literally took my breath away for a second. You're so good at making natural looking shapes and adding color details omg. All that building up work was so worth it, it's so beautiful!
Rachel, you have done it again…..blown me away with your talent! I love watching you develop the scenes! What a talent you have, my dear! Love from Pennsylvania 💕🌷🐻
My walls suddenly feel so boring... and I inadequately skilled to change that. The raw talent you ooze is simply unearthly.
Right there with you... this video makes me think "I could paint a mural on that big, blank living room wall"
Then I remember that my art skills topped out at coloring books...
ua-cam.com/video/gmplogHAii4/v-deo.html motivation!
Practice copying off coloring book pages of just one element at a time (such as a tree) into poster board to get the scaling-up process under control. I would need to make huge pieces of the picture by cutting and taping, then tracing the element so I could I could get it where I want it. Now I want to look for Grandfather Twilight for inspiration.
I highly recommend trying out a paint-along event or video - it have to be as fancy as the Bob Ross ones and you'll be amazed by what you can do with a $20 watercolor kit or $10 of acrylic paints from the store.
The subject is picked for you and you're told what shapes to make instead of having to figure it out yourself; those are the things that I have the most trouble with. I finish one of those and think "Wow, did *I* really make this?" They aren't perfect, but they're much better than what I thought I could do!
Rachel: "i hope this wasn't too boring to watch"
Me: Gurl.. i could literally watch you paint for 10 hours straight and would have the best/most relaxing time ever while doing so 🤣
So if you're every in a pinch for video ideas (not like a whole ass mural size project persé 😅) Just go sit in your beautiful garden, paint and record 😙👌❤️
I agree 100%!! I would watch Rachel painting over most other UA-cam videos. Definitely a great idea for weeks when you're in the middle of a big project or don't feel like sewing!
Yeaaaaah I go through such a stressfull time and I am so gratefull that I can watch rachel and feel better for a moment
Agree 100%!! :D

Don’t feel the need to force yourself to talk if you don’t want I would watch a silent version of your videos. It’s just amazing to watch you create.
Yes! A couple of happy mutters over that one bit that turned out well, 😂😍 and just companionable quiet time.
Quiet is not silence and that is something a lot of people are looking for. (My tumbler page is full of people inviting you to read, study, paint quietly with them in various places. 😌 Imo there are not nearly enough of them.) Love it💗
The whimsy! The unorganised, non-directional nature of large art projects! The conversation updates! The reality of things not always working in the time you want them to! The giggles! Great balance of everything in this post. Loved it. *I had fun here* (as always)
I miss murals. My grandfather always painted murals in my houses growing up. I have a very strong nostalgia for them. It looks beautiful.
I hate to offer this suggestion AFTER you've already made the mural, but larger house painting brushes are a great time saver for your flats. ❤️
Yes, I’m just a few minutes in and I’m willing you to use a bigger brush! Next time… ☺️
As someone who used to paint theatrical scenery for a living: can confirm! Bigger brushes are the way to go!
Yup. A nice 3" Purdy sash brush will last a lifetime and give you a ton of flexibility and even some fairly fine lines when turned to the side. I did murals for nearly 20 years using 2 of these, which have also done a ton of edge and trim painting, plus sponges and artist brushes that got replaced fairly often. Still have my Purdys, though.
she's gonna have to do another mural to test your bigger brush theory....and I am here for it
Earlier it was "Ask a Mortician" and now Rachel!! Thank you for the vids today!!! Watching them to take a break from catching up on the Depp testimony.....

Question: anyone else see Rachel in front of the mural during the reveal and think "OMG, she's like a perfect Snow White!" or was that just me? 💖💖💖
Yes!!!!😂
Yes! She could make a snow white or a little red ridding hod cosplay and pose in front of this wall!
Not just you!
I immediately thought--Romantic painting!
In the beginning of this video, I could practically hear everyone who has ever done murals cringe in sympathy because we knew what was coming. My mom painted murals professionally for department stores when I was growing up so I feel you. "this paint stinks!" I viscerally smelled it when you said that :D But seriously, it came out amazing!!!
I paint sets in theatre and my god does paint stink. Rustoleum smells the worst out of all the paints We have
I love Rachel's murals so much but what I really admire is her dedication to finish them because i've been living with the painted floating head of my cat for around 5 years and can't be bothered to paint the rest of the body lol

When my daughter was little , about 7...
We were in the middle of a crazy cold winter ... my daughter cried because she wanted to see flowers ... we went and bought all the pretty colors she wanted and all along the stairs going up to the bedrooms she painted grass about 4 inches high ... the next week she painted stems , then all kinds of flowers... when she didn't want to go to bed , we would crawl up the steps as she said goodnight to all the flowers by name... when we were going to sell the house , the realtor said " cover that up " , l told her no and the story... she retold the story to anyone who asked about the flowers . We sold the house to a family with a 3 a 5 year old girl and the wife was carrying girl # 3... l think the artv sold the home...
No way you could have known this , but thank you. You rekindle great memories
without knowing how wonderful you are.
Looking forward to your next post.

“I want to be surrounded by whimsy.” Yup, I feel that.
I truly appreciate all the love and CRAFTSMANSHIP you put into your projects!!! ❤❤❤ it's magnificent to watch and a like and subscribe is the least someone could "pay" for your art skills, editing skills, comedy skills and overall warmth ❤❤❤ Thank you!!!
"I want to be surrounded by whimsy" - love that vibe. Also, I will watch all the wall mural videos!
Now she just needs some glow-in-the-dark paint to add some details in the foliage. A lunar moth. Or some faerie eyes peeking out. Some little secret surprise.
Being a fellow artsy person, I have painted several murals in our house. My sewing room still has my younger daughter's design, which was some horses on the beach, and my husband's office is full of puffy clouds, and an arbor over one doorway. Very fun to do! Very forgiving! Love watching your process! Makes me want to do another! Hmmmmmmm....
Very inspiring!

Me: I feel like that every week, you’re all good. ☺️😂😂
We're all weird here. We like hanging out with one of us! Thanks for sharing your pretty wall it looks like stepping into the woods!
That - is - WONDERFUL!!!
Unrelated to the STUNNING mural, I absolutely love the "in between" stage your hair is in right now. It's the perfect auburn and looks so beautiful on you. ♡♡
My mother let me paint on my walls (the house would be demo-ed regardless), but apparently, I painted something "inappropriate" and so she painted a whole wall with chalkboard paint so I had a huge wall to draw on instead. My brother got a wall painted with fish and ocean-type scenery, and a pirate chest and chair to match. I believe it was blue velvet? This brings back memories.
I love this idea and i feel your struggle.
For those who are uninitiated:
Any paint with "basics" or "economy" in the name will ALWAYS let you down unless you are a 5 year old finger painting. Theyre super watered down.
Paint with "heavy body" in the name (Liquitex is my preferred) will do you right and go much much further than basic paints.
Yes it is more expensive. Yes it is worth it. Every step of the way.
I love it, I did a fairy on the front of my Spanish house, she was an autumn fairy with a large tree painted over the window. I loved doing it and was doing a fairytale castle in my bathroom before we had to come back to the UK. Best wishes and enjoy your spring Garden xx
I'd love to see a pic of that!
I will try and find one and send it to you, maybe a while. Best wishes Heather
This turned out INSANELY gorgeous. I feel that instant gratification gene statement in my soul and sometimes it absolutely hinders my art!! Gotta trust that damn process.
The most nonchalant display of actual artistic skills I might have ever seen 😁 you are so talented yet so humble! I loved everything about this video, both the painting and you enjoying the process🥰
Adding my compliments to everyone else’s.
Wish I could paint.
I had a childhood friend whose mom was a professional painter, and one whole wall of her bedroom was a gorgeous mural of a forest that her mom painted, so this was very nostalgic to watch come together 😌 absolutely beautiful work!!
I love the process so much. "Okay, that green is VERY neon, hm, and that looks a bit strange and HOLY POTATOES, IT ALL CAME TOGETHER AND NOW IT'S A BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART!!"
I guffawed at the end when you “weem-a-wepped” Frodo’s nubbin because my husband and I have a decades-long-running argument over whether the lyric is “weem-a-wep” (me, the correct answer) or “wing-a-whack” (poor, mistaken husband) that will probably remain unresolved into eternity. Thank you, Rachel, for being on Team Ellen. ✊
I like it. It looks like you could just step through the archway into the shady woods 😍the glints of light through the top leaves in the trees, and the greyer leaves and foreground foliage make it really beautiful
the talent!! the artistry!! also 19:29 "I want to be surrounded by whimsy" that's my new motto
So truth! "Whimsy" is life!
all of my art and diys look like hot garbage until the last 10 minutes before i finish them lol. the mural turned out so bootiful, good job!
" I want to be surrounded by whimsy". That is totally what time it is!
Also, be sure to sign and date your murals. Years from now you will be so glad you did, and your children will be glad, too.
I'm a landscape painter and would love to see that scene extended to every wall on the room and just go section by section on each piece you are so talented
