  • There's a lot more than meets the eye with this little smart speaker. In this video, I'll tell you what I like and don't like about spending a year with these speakers, and give you a look at all of the different colors side by side for comparison.

    Based on the title, I was expecting ( hoping for ) a video of thoughts about life with a HomePod mini after a year of use. This is more of a review of a new product. At least the half I watched was.

    This is the only video that really shows the vibrancy of the new colors! All the other videos I have look like they have a dark contrast slapped on top of the shots. Thanks so much! 😊

    Top two uses of the HomePod mini for my family is making the grocery list that we share on our phones and letting our kid think he has some super power that lets him turn off lights at bedtime with just his voice.

    LOVE these new colours! On one hand it's hard to believe, the Homepod Mini has been around for only 1 year. I might be a little dramatic here, but how did we ever live without these!? 😂 My favourite is Blue but only by a hair... Keep up the awesome work!

    Thank you Eric! Great videos in your channel! I decided to finally start investing in a smart home and of course as an Apple fan I will be focusing on Homekit compatible accessories. I'm waiting to receive my first HomePod mini and was wondering....if we eventually have several HomePods in the home do they all need to be associated to same Apple ID to be connected to Homekit and to take advantage to intercom etc? Asking because I'm sure my kids will want one in the room! Thanks

    6:50 Apple should definitely support defaulting media output to a AirPlay 2 speaker! Makes a lot of sense as long as they aren’t going to make high quality Siri-enabled speakers on their own. Great video!

    Would be nice if you could use them with Apple TV for Dolby Atmos. Do you think that will ever happen. I have the old Homepods and they are just amazing with their sound, wish Apple hadn't stopped selling them, luckily I bought four before they went out of stock so I am good to go still.

    I tend to listen to music various apps - my own itunes library on my macbook, amazon music on my phone and occasionally streaming videos on youtube. Can you stream from any audio to the Homepod Mini or does it have to be Apple Music?

    14:15 Would strongly discourage using HomePod Minis with a Mac. I tried using HomePod Mini Stereo Pair with my Macbook. HomePod Minis have a very strong 3-second delay when playing anything from macOS. To be clear, there is no audio sync issue. Once it starts playing, the audio and the video are in sync. But for this to happen, right after you hit the play button, say in a UA-cam video, the video would wait for 3 seconds, and after that it would start playing on the HomePods. Similarly, when you pause the video, the audio would continue playing on the HomePods for the next 3 seconds after pausing. This gets pretty irritating after a while, and I ended up using an Echo wired with a 3.5mm cable to my Mac lol.

      The delay on my Mac ruins the HomePod mini, in my opinion, since that was the primary reason I bought it. It works perfectly with no delay on a Windows PC with Parrot2 running, so not sure why Apple can’t make it work without delay on their own hardware.

    The iPhone to homepod auto transfer is not new to the mini. Also, is the usbC input of the mini just for power, or can you plug it into your Mac(et al…) and select it as a speaker?

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 роки тому

      That's a great point. It was in the original HomePod as well, but the hardware has improved support for it in the mini that causes those inadvertent triggers of it in my experience.

    Hi, finale got my set. Apple decided not to see them in Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg. So were stuck with a English Siri :-) And NO help from them :-(
    I have a problem with Siri, she/he speaks so soft that I nearly have tp put my ear on the speakers yo hear her/him. When I put the sound up, only the music will go louder, not Siri? You happend to know how I get the volume of the Siri voice higher? Would be grateful :-)

    I like the orange HomePod mini but am holding out for a green one to match my iMac.
    As for using a stereo pair of minis to AirPlay audio from a Mac, whenever I do that it kills the speed of my WiFi network, costing me 100-150 MBPS of my 500 MBPS speed. This is associated with significant interference generated by the setup-as documented by my ISP.
    According to a discussion on MacRumors this is the result of the HomePod minis setting up an ad hoc network to use to play the audio, supposedly because AirPlay alone isn’t robust enough to support default audio from the Mac. (That part about the reason underlying the need for an ad hoc network is from memory, so take it with a grain of salt.) I love my minis but am loathe to use them for audio from my Mac because if I encounter a problem, getting proper speeds back requires a reboot of my router. Ugh!

    Hey Eric, love your videos! I have a stereo pair of HomePod minis connected to my Apple TV, but a separate HomePod mini a bit further back in the room. Do you know if I’m able to use all 3 for audio?

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 роки тому +2

      There are ways to group those but not in the same way as a stereo pair. You might have the best luck creating a separate HomeKit room for that part of the room with the extra HomePod. Then pair those rooms together in a HomeKit zone in the home app. Then you can ask Siri to play music in the zone and it will play on all three. A little convoluted to get setup but it should work nicely.

    • @JenniferEliseAtchiso
      @JenniferEliseAtchiso 2 роки тому +2

      Yes! On your apple tv simply click the check boxes for both your pair and your single… this will send stereo to the pair and mono(blended L&R) to the single

    I'm going to get my daughter a yellow HomePod so I can steal her grey one to make myself a stereo pair for my Mac mini. I was hoping that the original HomePod would be cheap once it got discontinued so I could get two for my Apple TV, but it looks like the price went up once they were no longer available new.

    Ever have the issue where the speakers just start playing some randomly queued music or playlist? Top most annoying "feature" imo. It'll start playing something I was listening to 3 months ago and it's not something I want piped throughout the house.

      Ball is in Spotifys court from what I can tell? Just waiting on them to allow it and that’ll sell a ton more of these. I switched to Apple Music to test with the Mini and it’s great but I miss Spotify simply for collaborative playlists. That’s literally all I want Apple to do.

      @@yaboy300 I have plenty of airplay speakers. What I like about HomePods is that I can use my voice, or Siri on any Apple device to control my music. Frustrated with Spotify dragging their feet. I’d switch to Apple Music if Spotify wasn’t bundled with other services I use.

    Around 13 minute mark you talk about walking into a room with a mini in it and saying turn on the lights cause it “knows” what room it’s in. Unfortunately this doesn’t work for me. All I get is sorry Dennis I couldn’t find anything like that in you’re home. I’m using Lutron and Hue for my lights.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 роки тому +1

      Is your HomePod mini assigned to the same room in the Home app? Are those lights added to Apple HomeKit via their respective hubs being added to the Home app. Also you could have an issue with multiple Apple IDs talking to different HomeKit homes or with one having insufficient permission to see everything.

    I just bought one, Dec 2021 (blue) and I cant believe how crap the sound is. It totally lacks high end treble... My Echo sounds much better, and it is much more flexible, I wanted to live the Homepod, it is much more expensive than its competitors, but not better, just my opinion...
