Many of my 70 plus year old friends can easily recognize most songs from the 1960's top hits by the uniqueness of the first chords played. Once I fooled them all with the Critters great recording Mr. Dieingly Sad and it was not identified immediately by the first few chords. But when the lyrics came through I could see the delightful recognition in all of their eyes. The genius of this tune is found in the chords, but mostly in the magical lyrics. Thank you Rachel Reys.
I've always loved this song so much, beyond description- and I love their use of the quaint phrase "Pray Tell(Me)"- just adds to the gentleness and sweetness of this classic from the harsh year of 1966 (I was eight years old then)...
Dave, I wonder how many Dave Whitney’s there are in a population of 340 million here in the USA, but your age is close, and this song is about what I would expect from you. Same as me. Are you from the Midwest? In the neighborhood of Ks? You can change out a pump on a heat exchanger skid? You wouldn’t think that HA was just a short word for laughing. And you don’t hate QA as much as many do? And if I had a million dollars (which I don’t) you wouldn’t tease me and call me rich. Did I get the right Dave Whitney?
I was a junior in high school in 1966 and I bought the 45RPM single of this and absolutely wore it out! I loved this tune and still do to this day. Beautiful and timeless. They unfortunately don't make them like this any more. It was great time to be on the scene!
This is literally one of the prettiest pop songs ever written! I'm 66, and probably have listened to this song more than any other from the sixties. Something about it is so soothing, I have listened to it more than once on many occasions!
spoonerfive I was born in the 90’s when my mom or dad would drive my brothers and I to school they always had an oldies station on the car radio (which sadly doesn’t exist anymore) I heard this song one afternoon on the way home and kept humming it and messing up the lyrics, I couldn’t get it out of my head, that night my dad asked me what I was humming I said a oldies song on the radio,he took out his guitar and tried to hack out what I was trying sing, suddenly like a light going on he figured out the cords of what I was humming & singing in my lame way. After that day my dad & his friends always added MR DIEINGLY SAD to their play list. They did a long play version for my Sweet Sixteen Party & now I plan on it being “our” father daughter dance at my wedding in 2021. I wonder if Don had any idea the effect his amazingly beautiful heart touching song meant to so many people & spans of generations. RIP lovely man I wish I met you to tell you what I feel about this song, your musical talent & voice💖💖💖
I will play this song five or six times in a row. Often multiple times a day. I'm right there with you. Ever since I first heard this, it just grabbed me and never let me go! I'll be 73 in a couple of months. This music goes right to where you live, and nothing feels better there!
This song takes me to places left behind decades ago, but these visits to the past are like a tonic I wish I could drink one more time. This tune refreshes, makes me smile and daydream in 2024 like it did in 1966. Love it.
A really good 'sloppy love song' has to have three things 1. Great lyrics that paint beautiful pictures in the mind. 2. Great chord/music arrangement to carry the lyrics along.3. Great harmonies that blend well together. This song has all three elements. It has long been a favorite of mine.
I remember buying this 45 going thru a check out stand. Loved it and always have. It makes everyone think of a very special person whether they married them or not. However, I’m very happy with the woman I married years later. Still love the song though.

Just had graduated high school, summer 67' in Michigan.Met a wonderful girl ,Karen. This became our song, the most beautiful song for young loves. So now you're thinking "Ok he found her,he married her happily ever after" .Nope, didn't happen that way. She packed up in the fall and off to college to never see again. Last week ( oct. 2019) i ran across" Mr. Dieingly Sad" on UA-cam that instantly put me back in summer of 67' and my sweet Karen.I wondered, what if I should give this a try. Ok,let's do it. .Typed in her name on Facebook .Low and behold there she was, not the beautiful girl as I remember, but still beautiful 52 years later. Sent message and waited. 1 hour,2,3 nothing.2days,3,4 nothing.Ok lets leave well enough alone. Then "Bing" there she was message returned "Hi Jim" it's me "Karen " OMG now "I'm Amazingly Glad." We talked for hours and hours.we are both single now ,live 60 miles away and have arranged to meet again .ALL after hearing this amazing song on UA-cam. Thank you modern technology!!
Sincere bonding in high school brings couples together again when they've aged due a trigger and the emotional memories flow. Knew a guy like that, discovered his hi school girlfriend was single again in Texas, retired in CA, sold his properties and moved to Texas.
Im so sorry. What can you say to someone whose in pain? All I can do is pray for you and hope that youre holding on to precious memories. God Bless you.

I was a freshman in high school when I first heard this song at a birthday party being played by a live band. The first time I heard this song I already dug it because of its beautiful melody and smooth jazz tempo. It,s sounds sophisticated for a guy like me at the time who had no proper background in music. When I learned how to play an, acoustic guitar and became a serious musician, only then I realized that it's a nice and unique Latin chord progressions or chord runs. No wonder, it's an immortal musical composition.
The most favorite classic dance song of the 70's during my time in my high and college school days. We were not allowed to attend parties outside so what we do almost every Saturdays we have parties at home. The parties ended at 6-7 in the morning. After the party we went to church to attend Sunday mass........the crazy thing .....we slept during the mass.
I'm here commenting 3 years since my first post here, and things haven't changed. If I were stranded on a desert island and could have only one song to listen to on a continuous loop, it would be this one. The melody, vocal harmonies, and performance are simply PERFECT!
Bravo!! I finally found out the name and group who sing this wonderful song! I was just listening to it on the radio one hour ago on my local oldies station!! Thank You for the fantastic video and lyrics!!
This song becomes addictive the first time it's heard. It's right there with Cherish by The Association, Misty by Johnny Mathis, and Monday Monday by the Mamas and the Papas.
Funny you mention Johnny Mathis. I thought Mr. Diengly Sad was sung by him at first! Our transister radios didn't have the best fidelity back then, lol.
Thanks for give us this video. It's a song that shows the way in which the music was made... Beyond of words, the feelings spilled in the lyrics... and with your video I got daydreaming. I hope... A smile from your (at least)... 🙃
Even with all the great music going around at this time we all took a moment to slow down and listen to and enjoy this wonder piece of work that's how good it was then and now.
This is one of two incredibly romantic songs that were released in August of '66. (The other one was "Cherish" by The Association.) I was a few months shy of my 11th birthday, and when we weren't riding bikes we'd catch some shade in the local playground. Back then, high school girls were hired to work as playground monitors in the summer. Of course, those girls had their "transistor radios" tuned to the local Top 40 AM station. This great song popped into my head a few weeks ago. (Im posting this in early Feb of 2024.) I hadn't heard "Dieingly Sad" in many years, but it brought me back to that wonderful Summer of '66. I've listened to this song a lot lately, as well as other hits from that year...
i've loved this song since i was a kid. thank you for posting this. i seldom hear it now. this brings back happy memories of a simple, uncomplicated life. makes me smile while listening. ^_^

I'm here commenting 3 years since my first post here, and things haven't changed. If I were stranded on a desert island and could have only one song to listen to on a continuous loop, it would be this one. The melody, vocal harmonies, and performance are simply PERFECT!
big thanks ms Rachel for posting this beautiful song...gives me goosebumps every time I hear it...
You're welcome :-)

de mexico y mexicano con aprecio y admiracion para uds.
This brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for this wonderful post! :)
Love the background and how well it fits with this great and underrated song. Thanks.
You're welcome. Thanks for your lovely comment :-)
Even with all the great music going around at this time we all took a moment to slow down and listen to and enjoy this wonder piece of work that's how good it was then and now.
This is one of two incredibly romantic songs that were released in August of '66. (The other one was "Cherish" by The Association.)
I was a few months shy of my 11th birthday, and when we weren't riding bikes we'd catch some shade in the local playground.
You and me, too. We are about the same age. Great song.
A song of majestic beauty rivaled by few!
